KEVIN COSTNER WILL BE UNCHAINED

Cool. Let us hope that the Tarantino magic finger will work on Costner as it did on Travolta and Carradine. Man's too good to be in so little.

And, since this is a western, and we're talking about Costner, I will use this opportunity once again to point out how absolutely wonderful Open Range is. Seriously under-rated.

This was a long time coming. Wasn't Costner the original choice for Bill in Kill Bill but opted out to direct/star in Open Range?

Co-signed on Open Range.  Wonderful Western that needs its due.

I think in online circles Open Range definitely got its due. It definitely feels like the western most people bring up on Chud as underappreciated. The sound design alone is amazing, and the last action sequence is great. I do feel it's a little slackly paced, but it's definitely great. Really excited for Django, count me in as having a lifetime pass on the QT love-train, and I'm really excited about Costner getting his Henry Fonda on.

Open Range is amazing. Makes me feel sad that I never saw it when it was in theaters. Never saw it until 2007 and was blown away by how great it was.

Costner is certainly due for a major comeback. His character in 3000 Miles To Graceland is a slimy bastard, yet he still retains that charisma that only Costner can bring. This is great news, and I hope more of the roles fill out with other great actors. Thomas Haden Church? He was in that Broken Trail tv movie, and has that rugged manly look down. He should be in the movie too.

Has further western bonafides from being in Tombstone as well.

This is shaping up to be a helluva cast.  With the right material (the aforementioned Open Range) Costner can knock some shit out of the park.

Damn, I can't believe I forgot about him being in Tombstone. That's another movie with some great western actors who could be right at home playing villains in Tarantino's film.

Tarantino has also gushed about how Costner's Fandango performance blew him away, showcasing what true star power is.

The movie itself is garbage, but Costner delivers a deliciously mean and nasty performance in 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND.

And QT loved his REVENGE turn.

Ah sheeeeit, did we find another excuse to talk some Open Range? Hell yes, it's a masterwork! I also think the slack pacing of the first 40 minutes is great because it forces the viewer to slow down & really take in the scenery. It's a movie that breathes & every time I put it on, I feel like I just opened a window to the great outdoors.

I think Costner's up for re-appraisal in general. It's a shame that his handful of failures have overshadowed what is his relatively long list of bona-fide & near classic films.

So what's the deal with this role as some have already read the screenplay. He's playing a villain but DiCaprio is the main villain?

DiCaprio is the main villain. Costner would be playing his henchmen, I guess. It's a small role.

I was expecting Madsen to get this role.

It's a pretty tiny role, I hope maybe QT expands it for Costner, because it's such inspired casting.

Always hated that Costner's career was cut short, always loved him.

Close.  Warren Beatty was the first choice for Bill, back when QT viewed the character as almost more of a James Bond-type.  When Beatty turned it down, QT offered it to Costner.  Kevin was supposedly interested, but ended up passing for the exact reason you listed above.  I don't know if anyone else was asked to play Bill before Quentin landed on Carradine.

Anyway, looks like Quentin isn't one to give up!  He finally got DiCaprio AND Costner.  You can bet that at some point in the future he will still try to cast Beatty, Smith, and Stallone in his projects.  I think he's sworn off trying for Rourke anymore (way to burn your bridges, Mickey!).

While definitely a supporting role, I wouldn't call it a small one.  He's featured just about as much as DiCaprio and Jackson will be.

BTW, I absolutely LOVE how this cast is shaping up..................initial Jamie Foxx reservations aside.

I could be mis-remembering this but I recall when Mira Sorvino split with Tarantino and hooked up with Costner back in the 90's that Tarantino said he 'wouldn't stoop to cast him in one of my films'

Anyone else remember this or was it all tabloid bullshit?

I don't think so. He only had that one introductory scene, one with Django, and a final scene near the end. There is a good amount of time when he's not really doing anything. DiCaprio will get the most screen time, followed by Jackson. And while Tarantino could make the role larger, when you consider the fact that DiCaprio and Jackson are the movie's primary villains, as well as smaller villains like Spencer Bennett, I'm not sure it would benefit the story to make the role more substantial, given when the character pops up in the story.
