Darabont continues his experiment from The Mist.

Oh, it's only for the stuff he directed. Good. Because seeing the other episodes in black and white would only amplify how shitty everything looked.

"You know, that incredible hour and a half of television that was sadly not beaten by anything later on in the season?"

Boy, isn't that the damn truth!

Yeah, the drop in quality from the pilot was ridiculously large.  Nothing else came close to the 10 minute intercutting of bicycle girl and the other guy trying to shoot his wife.  Helped tremendously by the score.  But even Bear Mccreary didn't do much for the rest of the season.

How so?  While they're may have been a drop in the writing quality, I thought the show was, for the most, solidly directed.  And there certainly wasn't a drop off in Nicotero's work.

Never during its whole run did I ever take notice of the cinematography. Not in the way you notice cool scenes in Mad Men, or Breaking Bad, or Boardwalk Empire. It was pretty bland. And I can't remember any parts of it that wouldn't actually look worse in black and white.

Okay, but bland doesn't equal "shitty" per se.

Shitty may have been stretching it a bit. Feel free to substitute with bland, flat, uninspired, or any combination.

There's a lack of lines in the show that makes it disingenuous to compare to Madmen, Breaking Bad. Especially with Mad Men you get to play with that whole Mod sense of 60s visual style. Walking Dead's cinematography is actually quite well done, in my opinion, it can tell a lot in the haphazard mess. The scene of sheriff whatshisface (I've fogotten most of the story) driving up and walking through the dead and abandoned gas station is wonderfully well done, and gives a good sense of isolation. The rest is good to great on a visual scale, ridiculous CGI explosion at the end notwithstanding.

I may be the only person who actually liked the episode "Vatos" loved the twist in it. The only dull episode for me was the 5th one, which was a slowdown in pace from everything else that had been happening.

I bought the dvd set that initially came out, and I'll probably get this set just for the commentaries. Eventually when it goes on sale for less than 20 bucks.
