Had me an onkyo 606 which sadly fell under the weather. The HDMI was starting to fail.

Watched the hell out of that, and now it works! Sadly my warranty expired and had no choice but to open her up.

Got quotes $300, did it in an hour for $20 (including the iron and capacitors).

Yes this is what I do when the lady is working and I'm not.

$300?!  You could most likely get a refurbished unit for that amount.

I don't understand why repair shops charge so much to where they are going to lead the customer right out of the door to buy another unit or, as evidenced here, force the customer to learn to work on the repair themselves.

Very impressive work! After reading about your successful attempt I'm looking for a similar PS3 fix...

Well sadly at the moment I can't afford the $300.

I had planned to hold it out for a bit, but my receiver just decided to stop working, so I had nothing to lose trying this method.

I can understand some reasons for the higher prices. You really gotta be careful with the chips, especially with more expensive receivers.

I'm kind of tempted to now attach a PC cooler fan to keep the receiver cool...

...or maybe just solder my speaker wires to their banana clips (they are just taped on for easy removal, but if someone even lightly touches the wire, they can fall out).

edit: Wow this might save my day:
