You know the Lucasfilm logo gets you all hot and bothered..admit it.

That was really flat and lifeless.

Not for me.  I'm a sucker for big heroism like this.  I'm really hoping the film delivers.

Yeah, I'm with the nooj. The trailer hits every heroic fighter pilot cliche in the book, but I'll be there opening day.

Dogfights, heroism, and glaring, proud respect for a group of guys who will never get as much of it as they deserve from history.

Yep. 100% down for this.

And I'm SO glad that the trailer doesn't indicate a movie that sees this story told through a white character's POV.

Red Five standing by.

I'll be there will bells on.

However, that line* about black men not being able to learn how to fly planes is so off the charts, epically racist, that I cannot think I'll ever stop laughing when I hear it.

*I know that this was actually something people believed in and part of policy. Doesn't make it any less hilariously stupid in my opinion. I laughed when I first read about and I feel like I'll keep laughing at it forever.

Since Lucas didn't actually direct this, I hold out hope it'll deliver on what that trailer promises. Looks aces to me.

I see what you did there.

Or do I?

Yes. Yes, I do.

Can't say the trailer looks bad at all, and Lucas is no slouch when it comes to editing action (he just has problems writing for real human beings, and he didn't write this one). Too bad he didn't direct the whole thing, because he still has a great visual sense.

No, it's a good thing he didn't direct. See your own comment about how baffling actual human emotions are to George.

I'm completely serious -- I have my issues with the prequels, but it's sad that most of what gets criticized about the prequels are surface issues like dull dialogue, uneven line-readings, and CGI clutter, which certainly drag the movies down, but are not the only (or most important) elements in them.

Instead, people should be talking about Lucas's skills as a visual storyteller, and his widescreen compositions, which even today are head-and-shoulders over someone like Peter Jackson's. In fact, I'd probably go so far to say that Lucas's eye has actually improved since his '70s heyday.

There are some battle scenes late in Attack of the Clones (without dialogue, natch) that are literally breathtaking, and Revenge of the Sith -- a film that I think is actually fairly good -- is littered with good cinema (like the whole cross-cut sequence with the Jedi being wiped out in a genocide).

There wasn't anything nearly as impressive from a fluidly-cinematic standpoint in A New Hope, yet that movie is still largely regarded as one of the best and most enduring adventure films of all time.

For what it's worth, last I read, Lucas is basically in a Spielberg/Tobe Hooper / McTeague/Wachowskis situation on this flick. The entirety of the reshoots, in fact, are being directed by Lucas.
