Also, the AV club interview is a great read, but along with his interview on Marc Maron's podcast made kind of concerned for Harmon; he loves raking himself over the coals. We need to buy that guy a beer and tell him how awesome his show is.

You should try following his twitter/tumblr.  He broke up with his girlfriend recently and it's gotten pretty dark.

Harmon's a genius, but his depression is dark and unrelenting.

If you were a Greendale student, who is the last person you would want as a security guard?     Well, that person is a security guard.

The main thing I got from that WTF episode was that Maron seemed a bit intimidated by Harmon.

Abed's wide-eyed, but he's no innocent. I really try not to be a shipper but an Abed and Annie pairing would be funny in just how unhealthy it is. There's been some definite chemistry between the two but it always occurs when Abed is role-playing (literally so in the D&D episode).

Where to begin?  The musical cold open?  The monkey gas induced 2001 sequence?  Cougarton Abbey?  Very strong opener.

Also, anyone else get a Hudsucker vibe from the Vice Dean's office, or was that just me?

A really good open for the season. It wasn't the funniest episode the show's ever done but there was a ton of interesting set-up for the season to come. Now here comes the part where the thread devolves to everyone quoting their favorite lines:

"You're the opposite of Batman!"

Inspector. Timestream.

EVERYTHING ELSE IS A BLUR.

Good table-setter for the season, although the implication of the Dean's meta comment about "this year won't be any different, we'll just have less money" kinda depressed me. Hopefully the budget cuts that seems to be referring to won't hamper Harmon's vision for the show.

I was really wondering if Goodman was going to end up doing gay inferences like the Dean from City used to.  That whole "You bring your head down to my appendage" thing sounded like it was headed that direction.

I liked when Omar called him Starface.

I liked when Annie twirled.

2001, McHale with the axe — any other Kubrick references I didn't catch?

Although the axe thing kinda reminded me more of Blair in The Thing.

not enough Troy but having Pierce back makes me happy.

Decent setup, but it felt a tad bit restrained. Not the season 1 or season 2 strong opener, but more a simple setup. I did see potential, but I'll be nice and give a few episodes before thinking we're heading down the season 2 path again.

If budget cuts are there, then Harmon should just focus on making really good characters.

Starburns including the lizard in his outfit was GOLD. And the intro reminded me of why I don't watch Glee.

That musical number was better-staged and edited than anything Glee's done since their third episode or so.

Jeff's 2001 monkey knock out gas induced dream absolutely killed me.  I don't know why but I haven't laughed that long in a while.  I love how this show really feels like it's time to go back to school and I'm just excited to see the gang again.

Also, Leonard wandering through the shot.

"I don't wanna push it, but this'd be a great time to baptize him..."

"Jeff, what happened? You look...seventy."

Which goes right alongside Pierce wearing the hot dog suit/the crazed death-robot.

Ahhh, so happy this show is back! I loved how they addressed that Pierce's turn was due to being ostracized by the group. Nice turn of events with Jeff out-Piercing Pierce. And while I can understand people wanting the group to evolve, I'm with Jeff. I don't. I love their dynamic as is.

- Did anyone catch the Dalmation photos in the dean's office? Nice call back to his furry fetish.

This week's EW has an interview with Joel McCale. He said that this season Jeff and Annie will get together this season. I actually could see Abed and Annie being a couple. They're both wild eyed innocents.

I have to agree with you... this episode felt very restrained. But it really has given a good platform to build on for the rest of the season.  

My size and resolution are not good here, but on the whiteboard it says "Trannies, Monkeys, and Toys! Oh My!  What current actor does this refer to?"  Also, I enjoy Elevator Chamber Orchestra poster next to the Hot and Brown's hiring poster.

This was a pretty solid opener.  Good set up for the season. I like how Change now has some type of authority at school as a security guard, lol.

John Goodman was awesome.  Is he going to be recurring this season?  I'd like to see more of him vs. Horrible Dean.

Michael K Williams was great, as always.  Good foil for Jeff.

The Kubrick references were great.

Everything with Abed and the British shows was great.  Inspector Timestream was amazing!

That was expressly how Pierce defended his behavior for all of last season.  Not a new concept, and I'm completely with Jeff, it's not any kind of excuse at all.  This idea that the group has some kind of obligation to like him regardless of how he behaves confuses and irritates me. 
 

I recall quite a back and forth on CHUD about whether or not it was explicitly addressed. Still, I get your concerns. I just take for granted that the group is the group and that despite their differences (and with Pierce there are some large ones), they'll always work it out.

Goodman is going to be on more episodes than he isn't this season. So that's great. He reminds me of Ned Beatty in Network so far.

The episode as a whole wasn't top level Community, but that 2001 sequence and that completely brilliant Cougarton Abbey stuff suggest they haven't lost a step. I'm very excited for this season, and also for Sairus not liking it at all. 

I'm delighted Jim Rash is in the opening credits now. Good for him, and for the show for recognizing his worth. As a pansexual imp.

I was sort of disappointed that there was no intersection between the subplots of the Air-Conditioning Repair school making a power play and the issue of a monkey in the air vents.

Also, are we to understand that Greendale represents NBC and the Air-Conditioning Repair school represents General Electric?

Ahh, never saw 2001. But it reminded me of the Fischer portion of Inception with a dying Pierce in the bed in the middle of the room.

I assumed Change overheard the Dean's conversation.

The table as the monolith killed me more than it probably should've.

I love that there is no explanation for why Chang is carrying an entire baked ham when he runs into Jeff.
