Big fan of Community. Love some episodes. I don't came here often -even when I created the thread- but be sure I love it. Having said that...

The role of Pierce isn't funny. It was miscast and only came to the show due to a suggestion by the executives or network suits.

Harmon and his gang of writers have been unable to a) give him a proper arc or some decent stuff to do. b) forgot, cast another old man for a similar role -since Harmon is so obsessed with types I doubt he would forgot the hole being left- c) acknowledge Chase can't handle the stuff they write, he is funnier or more comfortable doing dumb physical stuff -that got old in season 2-

I know this is a touchy subject right now, but I couldn't disagree with you more, Andres. Pierce absolutely has had an arc. In fact, as everyone else has spiraled somewhat, he's the one character who's grown and improved a little (OK, and Troy has shown flashes of greatness).

Baffled by the "not that funny" comments. I thought this was damn hilarious, from Britta's cod-grieving session to the Dean's inexplicably amusing "Come on, I'm Dean" song. Honestly, I guess I'm more likely to gravitate to the less gimmicky episodes. Which is strange to type...I think of myself as more of a gimmick-loving kinda guy. And I do deeply love "Remedial Chaos Theory". But thinking about it, my favourite episodes tend to be the more heartfelt, character-based ones, like Mixology Certification and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (not a gimmick episode, really). But then, I also love Co-operative Calligraphy and Paradigms of Human Memory, so...

To me, Pierce is as much of the gang as anyone else; I love the character and I love the work Chevy has been doing, douchebaggery aside.  I think he's been consistently hilarious.

If the main cast has a weak link, its Jeong, but the writers figured out a long time ago that Chang is best in small doses.

Get rid of Chevy. Promote Leonard to the group.

I think Pierce character need a little change.

I wouldn't miss Pierce at all. I never found his character funny or necessary.

That would have made my day, but it will be the final season, just like 30 Rock and Parks & Rec.

NBC never said it was the final season like they did with 30 Rock. If some of these new shows they pick up don't last we could get the other 9 episodes. Until then let's just be happy it's coming back.

This started off a pale retread of Paradigms of Human Memory. But boy did the asylum bit turn things around.

I dunno we will get extra 9 episodes.

Prediction, Parks and Community will not get an additional renewal, maybe Sony will take them to TBS.

I'd be happy if it ended. COMMUNITY is losing momentum fast, and it has everything to do with how this season has handled Abed.

See, I thought this last episode was absolutely one of the best they've done, so I wish we got the whole season. I'll take what I can get though.

Agreed.  I couldn't help but wish that they would throw Abed in an institution and be done with him.

This show is rapidly falling into the category of "Things I have to sit through to get to Parks and Rec" category alongside The Office.  Each episode gets harder for me to sit through.  The only way I can describe it is it's becoming way more into itself than entertaining.

To be fair, though, I start feeling this way about almost every show I watch.  I'm getting end of season TV fatigue.  I just wish ever show went with 13 episode seasons.  That's the perfect length of time. I don't get sick of watching shows on FX or HBO.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to come off as the Debbie Downer; I just thought the article was very relevant since I know there are some Parks and 30 Rock fans here.  I kind of figured Community would be only 4 seasons long, but it's sad nonetheless :(

I wouldn't mind if 30 Rock ended this season.  But it feels like Parks is still going so strong and I would want at least 1 more full order season.  For Community, a final 13 episode season feels right.  I don't like it when a show overstays its welcome.

That's why my biggest reaction was towards the bit about The Office.

Yeah, COMMUNITY is quickly disappearing up its own ass.

In the past four episodes, Community has had two of my favorite episodes of the entire run (Virtual Systems Analysis and Basic Lupine Urology). To me, this show is still going wrong. But it's nice to have those that don't here in this thread as well.

Eh an 84-episode run isn't shabby too bad it couldn't reach 100.  As for tonight's episode, I was going to treat it as a throwaway but the asylum bit, whoa, and Garrett with the deep voice... just whoa. I know this is a parody of something I just don't know what.  Whatever happens between now and the future with this show it was a crazy ride.

There were a couple of Lost references in there.

Greenblatt was supposedly under pressure to bulldoze the existing schedule anyhow, so this isn't the least bit surprising, frankly.

At the end of the day, this is just NBC dodging a shitstorm of public outrage by giving these shows a token final renewal, so they can cover their asses and say, "See? We brought 'em back. Now shut the fuck up, assholes."

I'm just glad the show finally got around to taking the piss out of my least favorite storytelling tropes - "EVERYTHING UP TIL NOW WAS AN ELABORATE FANTASY OMG ISN'T THAT A GREAT TWIST???"

No, it isn't when the twist is just that you were lying to the audience.

Although I did like the asylum-eye perspective on many of the shows episodes.

Buffy was the first show to come to mind when they pulled that card. I think of all the times I've seen that story, Buffy pulled it off best.

Great episode.  Last season's "clip show" was better, but the asylum bit elevated it from good to great for me. That could've been the whole episode for me.

Not too bummed about the abbreviated season. Honestly, I wish most shows would cut their seasons in half, but I hope I'll be singing a different tune next season.

2. It can lead to permanent buzz kill

3. It could cause you to need meds the rest of your life

4. Meth can turn present fun into future numb

5. It turned Starburns into Star urned

So if someone offers to tell you a "meth time story".... pass

If this were any other show (except, perhaps, Parks & Rec), I'd probably be perfectly fine with a shorter season, too. In more cases than not, it's a good idea that gets followed through on far too seldom in American television today.

However, if anyone out there is capable of pulling off an 85%-awesome, 22-episode season, it's Dan Harmon. And that other 15 percent is typically 95% better than most other shows' own 85 percent.

As someone who enjoyed the majority of this season, this definitely stings. A bunch. About the only (perverse) consolation at the moment is that Community isn't alone on the innovative-NBC-show death-list right now.

I mean, talk about your "West Memphis Three"...

I've enjoyed this season a lot, Abed-centric episodes and all, so the renewal is definitely awesome news and I can only imagine what the hell Harmon and Co. are going to pull out next season.

The other bit of solace in this whole situation:

If too many of the ordered pilots bomb horribly next season, there's always the possibility that NBC will order up additional episodes of one or more of these shows to fill the void -- history seems to be on our side on this, at the very least.

The asylum version of 'Paradigms' just about killed me on the spot.

"Remember that time we went rafting?"

"Yes"

"Remember that time we painted that room?"

"Yes"

"Remember that time we all argued?"

"Yes"

*Troy starts screaming*

I love it when shows reward loyal viewers with callbacks to previous episodes or plot points, especially when that show is a comedy, the genre where callbacks are least used.

You know, the last like EIGHT episodes of Arrested Development were all references, in many cases heavily, their impending cancellation. How often is it accused of... what's the phrase... "crawling up one's own ass"?

Also now-morbidly-meta-funny was Jeff's line tonight:

"Most community college students go for 5 to 7 years!"

Anyone else find Peyote Britta kind of adorable?

And I loved the seeming admission that two paintball episodes was maybe one too many.

Peyote Britta was awesome.

Deadline reporting that Dan Harmon may be leaving the show.

...What.

ETA:  For the record, I don't buy this. This show is too much Harmon's baby, and the only reason he'd ever quit would be to concentrate on arguing with people on Twitter full-time.

Why would they plan on razing the entire Thursday night schedule (save The Office) if they haven't given up on the 3 good shows?  It sucks and all but the writing is on the wall.

"Vicki to Queen Three."

Loved the "dubbed" Garrett.

so, WTF is NBC going to do for programming....let me guess.

-20 hrs of America's Got Talent

-10 hrs of Betty White's Off Their Rockers

-15 hrs of The Celebrity Apprentice

- a couple of hrs of Dateline NBC

-1/2 hr The Office

I had to look up the NBC schedule to see what to use...jeebus!

The next step would be a reality show where they dowse a Peacock in gasoline and light it on fire.

or as mentioned on 30 Rock tonight...NBC just becomes a website where they sell used office furniture.

Whew!  With all the talk of the 4th season, I thought tonight's episode was some sort of cliffhanger finale for next season.  Then I remembered that NBC was gonna show several episodes in one night to cap this season off.

Also:

Brett Ratner is the new Spielberg.

I think my favorite joke of the night was the study group agreeing that wherever he was being held, the Dean was almost certainly trying to cobble together a sexy Patty Hearst outfit.

My favorite weird line was the cop going off on a long tangent about Antique Roadshow and finishing it off with 'oh, and leave in pairs. Rape's up 8%'.

"Stop letting him make you realize stuff!!"

This was the best Garrett-episode ever. I'm glad they saved him.

The "Can I Fry That?" part was fucking hysterical. Lost it when he got so pissed at the girl for suggesting "fries."

An ongoing joke I love: Abed not knowing how to read analog-clocks. Hinted at in "Virtual Systems Analysis," expanded on in "Basic Lupine Urology," and tonight he is absolutely confused by them.

13 episodes.  Not a full season, but apparently all NBC's sitcoms - new and returning -  will start off with 13.

Oh man, that was fun. Guess the show is coming out of it's depression spiral. Also, the homeless guy? Who was that, cos I wanna say Jospeph Gordon Levitt.

I'm not the only person who felt that this was a way to dump all the jokes they might have used in an upcoming season? Removed from their potential plots and shot before they might get cancelled?

Chevy as a gangster is the best thing ever.

We don't really know how many episodes COMMUNITY will get for the 4th season, do we? We just know it will be a "shortened" season, correct? I saw 9 and 13 episodes mentioned above; just wondering where those numbers came from. I hope we get at least 12 or 13, to allow Harmon & Co. a bit of breathing room to close things up. Nine seems too few.

And that linked article about the razing of Thursday night's line up - they're giving Matthew Perry another show? Much as I like the guy - and I do think he's a talented actor and comedian - you'd think his string of Nielsen poison post-FRIENDS would be enough to give NBC pause. And I say that as someone who genuinely loves STUDIO 60.

I don't mind 13 (it's definitely 13), because it's better than nothing and allows Harmon to end the show. But I would prefer they know whether it's the ending or not. I think they've got a hell of a series finale in them, and I'd like it to get to play out as such, not be a half-assed finale that leaves the door open for 9 more episodes or whatever. That might actually be the worst case scenario for me. Ah well, probably not worth worrying about.

I think 13 episodes is plenty of time for Harmon & Co to wrap everything up properly.  If it gets picked up for more, great.  If not, well we still get have 13 more episodes of Community to look forward to.

Regardless, I loved this episode.  Garrett's voice killed me.

And I know he's always tremendous, but has anyone else thought Troy was on absolute fire the last three weeks or so? Every single thing he does makes me laugh my ass off. "I just wanna cook my food".
