I'm so happy to have this show back.

 

One top of everything else that's been mentioned, I love Troy's little gasp when Jeff talks about how the table is magically holding up their books. Also:

 

“If I wanted to run a monkey hotel, I’d install a banana buffet. I’d use vines as elevators, I’d put tailholes in all the bathrobes, and I’d lower all the shower heads.”

 

I love the idea of Chang as the security guard. That's a much more natural place for his character, and I think they'll be able to get a lot from him in that role.

It's like hooking up with old friends at this point. I smiled the whole time, I lost my shit at the very clever use of 2001, and John Goodman is a gift from the heavens.

The episode as a whole wasn't top level Community, but that 2001 sequence and that completely brilliant Cougarton Abbey stuff suggest they haven't lost a step. I'm very excited for this season, and also for Sairus not liking it at all. 

 

I'm delighted Jim Rash is in the opening credits now. Good for him, and for the show for recognizing his worth. As a pansexual imp.


I enjoyed it for what it was.

 

Guess I'm enjoying season 1 of Sons of Anarchy way too much (yes I will watch Breaking Bad after this, trying to up my TV quality and not just compare everything to Mad Men).

Cue previously masticated upon rigatoni trying to make their way out through my nose. Some did. Only to be greeted by a mixture of tears, laughter and the sounds of a desperate man, trying not to choke on his food.

 

Other than that it was an OK episode, which by Community standards means it will be better than 90% of the comedy I'll watch this year.

Not an issue, but I don't really believe that someone as pop-culture savvy as Abed wouldn't already know of the existence of Inspector Spacetime!

God I hope Inspector Spacetime is this season's Kickpuncher, and we get to see new clips of it every couple of episodes, and Troy and Abed doing a sweded version (which seems pretty obvious that they'll do).

Really love the Kubrick references running throughout the episode. I got hooked on Community this summer and find it to be the only show I bother tuning into Network TV for so I'm excited to see what craziness Harmon and company have in store. (I'm glad they resolved the Pierce problem asap.)

I would have said the other way around. He's a geek, geeks know about Doct...Inspector Spacetime even if North Americans only really started tuning in lately. I'd excuse it by saying Abed's really obsessive and focused, the way autistic people tend to be, so it's possible he just hasn't bothered with non-American pop culture until now.
 

So glad I can comment on this show now, having caught up just recently. If the show's budget is cut, all I can say is, GOOD. Comedies don't need huge budgets, even if this show uses them better than most. Even with this show I feel like they sometimes get lost in the gimmicks and forget to be as funny as they could be--my favourite episodes are things like "Cooperative Calligraphy" and "Mixology Certification" rather than the lavish zombie episodes and stop-motion Christmas episodes. Even paintball, as classic as that's been, is probably risking overexposure by going to the well again. Of course, I say that knowing chances are really good we'll be getting another paintball episode, and it'll probably be awesome, but hey. Maybe if they save their pennies and make that the big blowout episode it'll be for the best. In the meantime, focus on the character comedy.

 

It certainly looks like they're going to focus on redeeming Pierce this season, doesn't it? I sure hope they don't go too far into that and lose what makes the character funny, but yes, I could really stand to see him being less of a dick.

 

I also hope the finale of Cougarton Abbey wasn't foreshadowing for the final episode of Community.

Went back to where it all began and started watching season one again last night (my mate who's just moved in with me has never seen it). It's fascinating to watch as Harmon gets braver and bolder with each new episode in those early days, sketching out the characters and their relationships, as he decides what he wants them to be and what show he wants to make. The different comedic layers start being introduced almost one at a time episode to episode, until by the 6th or 7th its really beginning to look like the show we know and love.

 

It's pretty fascinating and gives me an even deeper appreciation for this television gem.

As far as I know Harmon has said that he doesn't have an endgame for the show, or a plan beyond four years, but I do believe he has stated that if it gets picked up for a fifth season he would continue to do it and would do it the best way he could. I don't have any links but I do believe that I read/heard that somewhere (might be in his WTF interview).

I remember an interview where he said he had a plan for going past season 4 that he was quite enamored with, but would involve a fairly large shake-up of the current status quo.  I have faith in the man, but 4 years is a decent run in its own right, so whatever.

I think I've heard/read Harmon joke numerous times that post Season 4 the entire cast would grow beards and become teachers at Greendale. Also on one of the Season 1 commentaries Harmon said he didn't want to go the route of "Oh, Jeff, they spelled your last name wrong on your diploma. Guess you gotta go back to Greendale"

@Andrew Joe, I think Goodman office is more reminiscent of Coen bros.

@Rain Dog The episode that gave me the vibe it was special was the Dead Poets Society episode that ended with the teacher climbing a tree. But I had the advantage of doing a mini-marathon for the first episodes thanks to all the comparisons being made with Parks & 30' rock.

As interesting as it would be to see them try to figure out season five, I'm currently just hoping they finish season three. Ratings were down. And fucking Whitney did well. It wouldn't be insane of NBC to try Up All Night on Thursday, and with 30 Rock due back, I could imagine a big thursday night shake up that ends both Community and Parks and Rec.

 

The only good thing is NBC is generally so terrible at everything that they might just get stuck into some other doomed slot. But hey, it just wouldn't feel normal as a Community fan if I wasn't worried about this.
