Your classic ape out of water film.

Spot on re: Cornelius' death. I first saw this flick when I was 10 or 11, thereabouts, and those sick, blowing noises he makes disturbed the shit out of me.

Also: when is Ricardo Montalban NOT charmingly over the top?

Never.

This is a good film, but I might like it the least of the original series.  I'll get back to you all on that after I watch Battle again.  Anyway, the main reason for me (currently) liking it the least is the whole satirical nature of the film.  While most of it is done well, I too wish they had kept it at least a tad more serious.  Still, it is a good movie and a refreshing palette cleanser after what came before...........and what follows.  I imagine it plays better amongst the franchise as a whole than it did when it first hit theaters back in the day.

Also, it was great to have Roddy back!

Surely this ending emotionally scarred an entire generation of nerdy children.

Uh-huh.  You know that land drill thing Cornelius and Zira pass when they're about to get to the ship?  Whenever I see one of those I immediately feel depressed, due entirely to the fact that my 8-year-old self knows that when that thing appears in this movie, it's about get really dark and sad.

You could probably say Conquest, where he actually plays it nicely somber and subdued, but purposely whips out the flamboyant "Armando: Ringmaster!!" persona a couple of times when needing to get past soldiers, etc.

Anyone else spot M. Emmett Walsh as one of the military staff at the beginning?

Yeah, he looked so young.

I just can't believe I never caught that before and I just rewatched these suckers a few months ago.  Hell, I wasn't even looking at the screen at the time.  It's his distinctive voice that caught my attention.
