DOESN’T GET MUCH MORE POLARIZING THAN DIABLO CODY DIRECTING RUSSELL BRAND

I wonder which one inexplicably annoys the shit out of a bigger swath of people?

Cody's always been golden in my book. Brand just has this habit of being inconsistent. His level of retardery just reaches a low I can't follow at times.

That said, Get Him To The Greek feels ridiculously personal for that dude, and he knocks that flick out of the park. So, yeah, I'm down for whatever he wants to do, at least for curiosity's sake.

Yeah, Brand's very hit-or-miss, though when he hits he does great work. His voice work in Despicable Me was a sign that there's more than just the fuck-it-all rock star persona at work there.

Cody's great, and I'll take a club to any of the wet sandwiches who feel like pissing on Juno again. Also great (or, at the very least, very good): United States of Tara.

I think what pisses off Brand's detractors is how juvenile and show-offy he sometimes comes across as. Listen to the dude talk for more than 20 seconds and it's obvious he's wildly intelligent but he's so big and so loud and so dandy it's not hard to see why his detractors might have what Renn calls that "threatened" tone. Like Greg, I also find him hit-and-miss, in that I can't stand his stand-up, I enjoy his films and interviews and I think his radio show/podcast was one of the most brilliantly entertaining things ever brought to audio.

And speaking of brilliantly entertaining podcasters, of course Renn's also talking about the boss when he says that. I know The Nunz hates Ol' Russ but I've never heard/read him expand on exactly why.

Nick's hatred is mild compared to what I've seen some places.

It's true that The Nunz is possessed of such rampant and formidable sexual power himself he's unlikely to feel threatened by Brand on that front.

Only have liked Brand in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Outside of that no haven't been a fan.

Good luck to Cody.

Could someone maybe get Swedish Miyagi back as a guest for the post-release thread?

This seems to be the general tenor of the replies, which is weird because Brand's got roughly ten times the work on his CV than Cody has, so of course he's gotten more ups and downs. I think JUNO is amazingly accomplished from start to finish, but there's nothing else on her (very) limited list of projects that inspires the kind of confidence that almost all threads about her seem to contain.

Count me as someone who is interested in this team up, looking forward to seeing what is produced.

I think Brands main problem is the bulk of his work so far has been done outside the US and therefore most people havent seen what he is capable of.

Not a particularly big fan of either, but I can say that out of those 2, Brand is the one who's produced work I've genuinely loved - his standup. The whole Cody thing remains weird to me, partly because I find her stuff to be decent but not at all "great" and partly because she's the only screenwriter I can think of who inspires these massive sorts of debates and positive/negative comments - well, apart from maybe Tarantino but at least his work can be genuinely mindblowing.
