Bellflower Post-Release

So this opens in two theaters today. I know good ole' Renn has been hyping it up, and for good reason.

I do hope it spurs debate and passionate response. I don't think I've seen a more believable (and ugly) representation of male rage onscreen in awhile. I think if you reacted on a somewhat deeper level to something like Fight Club, or even Taxi Driver, you might find something of interest in this. Just a fascinating, ungainly, intense experience.

Brilliant and engaging. It's the post-millennial Fight Club. Whereas in 1998, men had jobs we hated, at least we had jobs and direction. Here, we're a people so in love with the end of the world it's all some of us can think about to distract us from our existence. The thrill of being kings of nothing outweighs the banal life of substance. If some films work as a mirror, then I see myself in Woodrow; charming, listless, directionless and so full of rage. It terrified me more than any horror film this year; brutal, savage and yet, so beautiful and wonderful.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just saw this movie, and am actually a little surprised to see so little discussion about it.

That being said, allow me to take the contrary position from the meager few already offered: I disliked this movie.

Stylistically and thematically I thought it was very interesting, but its mumblecore sensibilities and insufferable douchebag hipster characters made it ultimately not work. None of the menace and dread inherent in the subject matter came across for me because the characters simply didn't portray it convincingly.

It's interesting to see comparisons to Fight Club, because no movie could have been further from my mind after seeing this. Despite its attempts to be dark and disturbing, I was more reminded of The Puffy Chair.

I will say this for the movie: It inspired me to think about it afterwards and come here to express my thoughts, so I don't think it's a complete failure. Glodell has definitely got some chops as a writer and film-maker. I'll keep an eye out for his future projects and just hope they will be populated by more engaging and likable characters.
