HOLLYWOOD’S TENTPOLE FUTURE: FUTURE DATES SET FOR HUNGER GAMES, PIXAR AND MORE

A Disney exec says some stupid shit, and dates are set for big movies!

Im sorry, I kinda didn't see anything there except for Untitled Henry Selick Film and a date. Might need to get my glasses checked.

I was gonna leave a comment on the actual article but my browser is acting up and won't let me log in to the site. It's just this piece reminds me of something I was saying to my wife the other day. I saw that "No Country for Old Men" was on basic cable. I made a remark that the movie is too good to be on basic cable -- the commercial breaks and censorship really ruin what is one of my favorite films in recent memory. It's the kind of film I like to see in a theater with a good audience. Meanwhile, tentpole films can be fun experiences, and sure there's spectacle that you'll only get if you're seeing it on a big screen, but I don't really feel a sense of loss when those sorts of movies end up on basic cable. There's just not enough substance there for me to care.

Of course, there's no reason a tentpole film can't also be a good movie, and there are several of those. It's just being good isn't a requirement.

I'd almost be willing to bet money that the June date will end up being Captain America 2.  As for the May one?  It won't be a sequel.  If Dr. Strange isn't put out as a third 2013 Marvel release (winter maybe?), then it will probably get that date.  It's hard to tell really, as Feige & Marvel's ultimate goal is to start putting out four or five movies a year............................two or three as "tentpoles" and the rest as smaller films.  I guess the real question is what they view as smaller projects out of the ones they have on the way.  Obviously the SHIELD spinoffs and a few others (Luke Cage, Iron Fist, etc.) are in that category......................but where do Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Sub-Mariner fit?  I'm leaning towards Ant-Man being one of the cheaper ones, but I'm not so sure about the rest.

Sorry if this may seem insensitive to chewers working in the industry, but a huge crash can't come soon enough. Hollywood needs a purge.

I'm starting to think we are never really going to get another big studio crash.  I really can't see it happening anytime soon.

TOO BIG TO FAIL!!!

Ugh.

It's less to do with being too big and more to do with our ongoing recession.  Once the economy eventually levels out, things might change, but for now theater attendance is high.  Hollywood isn't going to crash while people are going to the theaters in droves.  Until most of their blockbusters start tanking, it just isn't going to happen.

Black Panther or bust, Marvel. Now's your chance.

I'm guessing Black Panther is closer than we think, considering the keep dropping hints for it in the films we have already been given.  If anything, I'm betting he is a priority.

It's hard to blame American audiences for the state of cinema when films like Transformers 3 make 700 million dollars overseas.

You and I may not like it or agree with the choices the general movie going public make but there is something to be said for entertainment.  People don't (or didn't. I don't know if anyone actually still goes to the circus but I want to use it in my analogy) go to the circus to watch a deconstruction of the human condition unfold. They go to the circus because they want a visceral thrill.  I think many of us take a too cool for school, elitist viewpoint far too often when it comes to modern cinema and it's attachment to box office grabbing spectacle.

100% agreed.

No one is blaming American audiences. Certainly not me. Greek audiences, although pickier than US ones have their share of idiotic behavior to shoulder. But as someone mainly interested in stories and able to sit through almost everything to get a cool story what that douche said is infuriating. And I'd like to see him and his ilk fail spectacularly.

S.D. Bob Plissken, I would guess Dr Strange makes his first Theatrical House call...Halloween 2013!  Ghosts, Mages, Goblins,  Lovely Apprentices (Will...Clea Strange's Lady Love/Magical Apprentice, be in the film?

S.D. Bob Plissken, I am hoping that after single...Power Man and Iron Fist films, that there could be a...Team Up, combining sequels, if their individual films are hits!  Power Man And Iron Fist could be Marvel's Lethal Weapon, albiet likely PG 13!

I'm with you there!  I would love to get a Heroes For Hire film after the Luke Cage and Iron Fist solo adventures are made.

A big part of that is the currently-naive mentality "No matter how poor I am, I can at least still afford to go to the movies for entertainment..."

I'm soooo much pickier about what I spend at the theaters these days than in the past. I personally can not afford regular attendance. Thank God for Netflix and dvd.

I saw PIRATES 4 and CAP this summer. Along with a couple kids movies with the daughter. Shit's just too expensive. We'll pick up something used on dvd for $5 like THE LAST AIRBENDER and watch it at home, prompting me to say "I'm glad I dodged that full-priced-plus-concessions bullet in the theaters". Spectacle or no. It's just too risky. There's gotta be a pretty universal strong WOM here on the boards (opinions I trust) or a franchise or film-maker I love for me to want to venture out anymore.

I'm gonna see CONAN (love the character) and DON'T BE AFRAID (how can I miss it???) this month, but that's about it until summer stuff starts hitting dvd this fall.

They're waiting a year and a half for the second HUNGER GAMES movie?  Jennifer Lawrence is going to be 30 by the time this thing ends.

Oh yeah, and totally excited for the next Selick output.

I'm the exact same way, but the people around me certainly aren't.  Almost everyone I work with and most the people I know in general are going to the movies EVERY WEEKEND, no matter if there is anything that they are dying to see or not.  Hell, most of them just seem to go to the theater and pick a movie just based on what is playing closest to the time they arrive.  The same goes for the customers we have and we're right by a theater.  They'll frequently come into work the next day bitching about how mediocre or awful the movie they saw was, but it never stops them for doing the exact same thing the next weekend.
