FINAL DESTINATION 5 Post-Release

It's fun.  Certainly leagues better than The Final Destination, but don't expect anything revolutionary.  It's pretty much the same movie as FD2 and FD3.

Wicked cool ending, though.

Cool. How's the 3D? Is it post-converted?

It was shot in 3D.  This is the type of film I'd really recommend the surcharge for.  Nice depth, but more than that, shots of people getting impaled with long objects just look a lot cooler in the native format.

That's what I'm hoping for. I caught the FRIGHT NIGHT remake and I liked it a lot, but it didn't have a lot of crazy 3-D gore gags. Is it comparable to MY BLOOD VALENTINE 3D in that regard?

Never expected it.

REVIEW: FINAL DESTINATION 5

by Renn Brown: link

Final Destination 5 does what Final Destination 5 was meant to do.

Fun little flick.  Seems they put a bit more money into this one than the last.  I couldn't stand how cheap the last one looked.

Ranks 2nd after FD2.  Ending great.  Only missing some random nudity.  Fav kill was the the real skinny girl.

???

Wasn't that all of them?

The bridge sequence was my favorite, probably of the entire series. The rest of the movie was what it was.

That ending was pretty damn amazing. Also that sweet montage of kills from the entire FD series set to AC/DC's "If You Want Blood (You Got It)".

Enjoyed this a helluva lot more than the utter shit that was FD4.

Does David Koechner bite it? If so, did anyone yell Whammy!?

We saw the last show of the day in a sadly thinned out theater. Of course I pushed for us to see it in 3D, and man, IT DELIVERED. Some of the nastiest deaths in the series. The gymnastics one. Just the crunching sound. OUCH. Then the acupuncture and the laser eye surgery.

For once, the 3D paid off. I really hope this movie at least makes back it's budget. I want more of these. Especially if they make the 3D work like they did with this one. It's so rarely used effectively.

Also watching the Lion's Gate Bridge (local landmark) collapse was quite entertaining as well.

That gymnastics death was off the charts, especially with all the red herrings before it actually happened. The whole massage parlor sequence is hilarious.

Of course he does. I was hoping someone would yell Whammy, as that happened when I saw Snakes on a Plane. But no.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

He dies twice, like everybody. His first death, which you can see in the trailer, is the better of the two - it's where molten tar melts his face off. His second death is the least exciting in the film, it's just a big wrench shoots into his face, with no Rube Goldberg set-up.

Somebody should merge that Review Thread and this together.

Final Destination 2 was as good as these things get, and it was pretty fucking good. The opening highway sequence, the lottery winner's death...classic stuff. The subsequent sequels, this one included, have just been pale failures to live up to the second one. I'm about done with the series. Though it was good to see Tony Todd again.

The problem with FD2 is that none of the characters are interesting.  3 and 5 at least give the people some interesting beats.

Not to toot my own horn, but I totally called the ending within the first five minutes, at the first time the lead guy said the word, "Paris".  Might be a little fun to go back and look for Year 2000 anachronisms.   For example, they specifically made sure the sleazy massage guy had a pre-iPhone cell.

Another fun callback, when Olivia drops the photograph of her in the office, it's a photograph from the amusement park from FD3 with a "RIDE THE ROLLERCOASTER" logo at the bottom.

Way better than FD4.   About on par with FD3.  The lasik surgery bit was the best cringe-factor set piece for me.

I didn't call the ending, but I did pick up on all the Paris bits.  And second time seeing it after the test screening, there's a ton of hints.  The main chick is listening to Everclear in her car.  The old cell phone.  "I see dead people."  The spa certificate expires in 2001, etc.

Y'know what, the whole 2000/full circle to Part 1 thing went sailing over my head. Maybe because it's been, what, eleven years since I saw the first one, and I'd forgotten that the seminal doomed plane flight was going to Paris.

Do they actually sneak Part 1 footage into that last scene, or do they just use new actors to stand in for the freaking-out kids?

They reused footage of two of the secondary characters from the first movie.  No Ali Larter; I guess she cost too much.

It finally happened. A few days before my 30th birthday, I got old. I saw this piece of shit and finally understood, in full, why most adults couldn't fucking stand sitting through my childhood mainstays like the Friday the 13th series. Listening to the dialogue in this nonsense was like getting repeatedly drop-kicked in the temple by a club-footed Shaolin Monk.

This was one of the best crowd reaction movies I've seen in a while. And my crowd wasn't even that big. Which made it all the more impressive.

I guess we'll know where to find a good Tom Cruise look-alike from now on.

Loved this. Probably one of the best in the series.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Hints that this was a prequel

1)  The reference to Lisa Loeb

2) "I see dead people"

3) One of the photos show the rollercoster from Final Destination 3.

Anybody picked up any other hints?

...the lumber-truck.

What about it?

This might be as good as the second one, although the kills aren't as great. Nothing beats the glass plate and the opening highway of 2. Laughed so hard when the infamous tree truck made a cameo in this, also liked the rollercoaster image and the well-done ending. Was there a part IV reference I missed?

If this is the last theatrical output, the series at least goes out with a bang, but I could live in a world where we get up to let's say, eight Final Destinations. I choose an original concept over this any day of the week, but from the 'product' horror flicks, this series is one of the acceptable ones.
