Is it a dumb thread? Sure, but no more so than most of the last year. I do have to say that I've logged and started reading more in the last few days than I have in the last few months. Nothing beats Chewers in a fervor.

2) To Cylon Baby: If that's what CHUD wants to be then they should be it. Quit pretending to struggle to keep up with the Old Guard and break off in that direction.

We're cool, Phil.  I wasn't talking about you.  The skills you possess are well known, so I have no reason to knock you.  Honestly, you don't come to mind when I think of BAD; you're not even close to being a consistent contributor are you?  Maybe you should be.

I'd just come back from a Saturday night, so my comments may have been more forceful than I'd normally intend.  But, I am somewhat unimpressed with the other writers on the site.  No big deal.  I doubt it matters much, since Devin is obviously the heart of the place.

By the way, the best thing for new, uninitiated Chewers coming to the forum is to see a thread called "Are there still people here?" constantly being bumped. Really helps the infusion of new blood. Real encouraging.

We know some of you don't like each other. Let's let this one die for now. Maybe revisit it at a later (never) date.

This is my 2nd post in 5 years.   I've read through this thread and it is an amazing time capsule.   People referencing handles I haven't heard in half a decade (still complaining about the same stuff), references to "The old guard" and new chewers getting blasted, the great Devin and his ability to make you love and hate him.    I laughed, but mostly at myself for wasting the last 20minutes.   This is the same stuff people were discussing 10 years ago, it hasn't moved an inch since then.

I'll read a few more threads in some other sections, perhaps there will be something of interest there.   The main page has become such a normal thing for me to browse during my daily web surfing (do kids still call it surfing?), I only reactivated my account to see if there was any insight into why site is down.

I just recently learned about BAD a few days ago.   Similar sites have come and gone over the years, this is no different.  

****I was about to delete about 3/4 of this post, if not all of it, because it's wasted about 5minutes to formulate an opinion for a community I really have no connection with anymore.   Nostalgia is a funny thing, sometimes.

Why can't you guys talk about movies?

Interacting with Anderson over the years I've never gotten the impression that he's a dick.  He has a sense of humor about him that tends to favor the sarcastic side but once you break through that and start talking about things you find out he's intelligent, insightful and funny.  I think there are/were some folks around here that were dicks because that's who they actually are and they have no ability to separate that part of their personality with human interaction on any level.  And I think Chud's better off without them no matter how talented they may be.

Nah, the best thing is to have idiot douche bag wandering around pretending he's the second coming of Devin.

This place is dead as disco.  Even the front page.  What the hell is going on?

I blame the "Dame of the Day" shit, personally. Terrible, terrible content. Anti-content. The black hole of good, written content. Jesus seriously reconsidered dying for our sins when he saw that content. 

It makes it so that when Guy.com actually has something to say (which is rare, but it's there) it makes me not even want to read it. Because holy hell, when a site seems to be aspiring to becoming the next incarnation of Ebaum's World, this is bad. I look around at the talent and personality on these boards and to not utilize that... at all... it's just crazy. Maybe it's harder than it looks and I'm being naive, I don't know, I never ran a website or fostered a community like this. But it seems the elements are out there. 

And when I rag on content I'm of course not including stuff like Nick's set visits or Renn's uniformly excellent writing. Actual CHUD writing. It's few and far between, but still excellent. But this "check out this tennis star's rack!!!!!!" It just hurts me. It's painful to see that. Especially when you have a guy like Schwartz offering to produce content for the site. Look at the Breaking Bad discussion; it's crackling. Why wouldn't he be encouraged to write some reviews? Is there a hidden cost I'm not seeing? To witness a guy, a smart contributor, offer his talents and be stone-walled... it's a head-scratcher. It's galling. 

By the way my name is Blacky. Late to the party I guess. But I've been reading for a long time and although I never used to contribute a fucking thing, I'm trying now. This is my contribution. You're welcome! 

I appreciate the show of support, Blacky.  But it was agreed that it would be awkward to start doing reviews in the middle of the season, and myself and a couple others are putting together a BB-related feature to run after the finale.  I didn't want to talk it up before it was actually ready, but rest assured it's in the works and I haven't been abused in any way.

The Guy.com features don't much appeal to me either (my geekery is more narrowly attuned to CHUD's raison d'etre), but I don't find it especially burdensome to just scroll past them.  Between Renn, Josh and Trevor's works, there's still plenty of gold on the main page.

I normally don't post about community goings on or site politics, but I have to admit, I visited GUY.com for the first time a few days ago and didn't know what the fuck to make of it. I still like coming to CHUD, but there's a definite drain going on and I suppose it does get me a little misty. 

We've lost some good folks. I've been a little preoccupied with real world family issues and the movie and stuff. We're still here.

Just throwing it out there.

Really enjoying Jared's Crossing Streams, Joshua's Franchise Me, the brief surge of best-of lists on the forums, and (of course) the weekly CHUD video.

The Special Edition certainly has its charms. Witnessing Renn's further development as a writer has been pretty great. And 9 times out of 10, the stuff that Nick contributes serves as a constant reminder why I love this site and do everything in my power to devote some time of each day to visit the site.

Personally, I don't think content has gone to the dogs, especially with such a wonderful back catalog in the archives. I can only assume that CHEWER momentum seems to come in waves.

I've been trying to honor Nick, Renn and some other folks wishes about this thread, but (to cross post and earn some potential ire): I'm not here during the day because the forums completely fuck up IE, which I'm forced to use during the day. From what I can tell, I'm not alone. I still visit the main site - and love the content. Renn's writing continues to impress, CHUD's personality continues to shine through....but the forums might as well be on Pluto for me.

I'm here. And will continue to be....but frankly, I'm having to look elsewhere for great movie discussion during the day, thanks to a very persistent problem with the forums.

Also - and this is NOT a criticism - up until now I haven't done a lot of linking to content via Facebook due to my daughters being on Facebook and the salty language of some of the articles. Thanks to new, on-the-fly FB filters, I can start sharing more of the articles. Which I fully intend to do.

I'm in the same boat as Michael.  He put it much more eloquently than I could have.  I'm also forced to use IE during the day and the forums consistently crash and sometimes even lock up my entire PC.  It's maddening and gotten so bad that I can't even attempt to peruse the forums from work.  I read them often at home in the evening but during the day it's impossible.  

That being said, I really enjoy reading the articles via Facebook posts and the mobile browser during the day.  Big improvement from the pre-redesign days.  Franchise Me continues to be the best damn thing the site has going.  

We should probably move this to the bug-reporting thread, but what crashes for me in Exploder works just fine in Firefox.

Devin was always more of an interesting writer than a good one.  I don't think his departure has hurt the front page as some would claim, since I think Renn has proved himself to be a brilliant and interesting writer, who is actually better than Devin.  But the departure of writers who followed Devin out the door, obviously wasn't helpful.  And the boards definitely hurt with his departure, because no one can deny Devin fomented a lot of interesting discussion, which was his best asset.

 

Yea, CHUD has taken a massive hit over the past year, but along with or other than AV Club, it's still the best place to discuss movies and TV.

Devin was intolerable here, on BAD he's fucking toxic waste slagged over the internet.  Somehow, the man was able to write an article about "how to be a movie critic" that never mentioned formal education or working in the film industry ... even to say they were overrated or not necessary ... and get praised for it.

CHUD is still an interesting place to peruse, with some good articles and writers, but I found the boards became too difficult to navigate.  And I had one virus scare too many.  Additionally, I don't see enough fawning praise on this site.  Fawning praise has always been key.

Devin definetly overstayed his welcome at CHUD, but he seemed to have mellowed at BAD. At least that's the impression I get, but I spend much more time here than on BAD.
