Chewers' 100 Best Action Films of the 1980's - Page 4

Two times going over the list so far hasn't yet turned up this.

96. Full Metal Jacket (1987)  d. Stanley Kubrick

A good movie perhaps a bit flawed, its first half definiatly overshadows the second, but it's a Kubrick and has action scenes. What more do you need?

97: The Blues Brothers (Landis, 1980)

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

98. Superman II (1980) - Richard Lester/Richard Donner

The first movie has more action but this one is a strong follow up.  It earns a place on the strengths of the battle in Metropolis near the end.  Having taken himself out of the equation right when he's needed most Superman sacrifices his own personal needs and reverses the mistake.  He's been a whipped dog most of the movie and he shows up to kick some ass.  It's 3 on 1.  We have been primed and the movie delivers.

"General, would you care to step outside?"

I'm glad Sleeplesslumber got FMJ on there.  I know I've been hogging the list but I'm just going to finish it and then we can do swap outs if needed.

99. Return of the Jedi (1983) - Richard Marquand

Han's rescue at the Sarlacc pit.  The speederbike chase on Endor.  Three simultaneous battles: the assault on the shield generator, the attack on Death Star II and Luke vs. his father and the Emperor.  The Godfather-style intercutting between those three final conflicts.  That impossible shot/reverse shot of hundreds of starships flying at each other.  Yeah Ewoks suck and silly revisions are unnecessary but this movie was never NOT going to be on this list.

100. Ran (1985) - Akira Kurosawa

The last great epic masterpiece for a truly great master.  He was trained as a painter and would spend years storyboarding his movies in Japanese watercolor paintings.  A master of widescreen compositions and black and white photography, Ran was one of his few color pictures.  John Ford and Kurosawa cross-pollinated the American and Japanese film culture.  Japan got samurai movies filtered through the lens of the American westerns.  America got the seeds of influence that inspired Star Wars, The Magnificent Seven, A Fistfull Of Dollars and others.

Ran is a retelling of King Lear as a feudal Japanese period piece.  Armies bearing various colored banners swarm and serpentine against each other as a ruling clan devours itself in warfare and bloodshed.  Kurosawa made other movies that are more purely "action" movies (Seven Samurai for instance) but there's nothing quite like Ran.

Kagemusha and Dersu Uzala were also shot in color. A classy choice to finish off the list though.

I had forgotten about Kagemusha (it's been a while since I've seen it).  Will edit.  Thanks.

I was kind of surprised Young Guns didn't make it and I was holding Firefox in reserve. It's a damn fine list though.

101. THE CHALLENGE (1982) - John Frankenheimer

Directed by Frankenheimer, co-written by John Sayles, music by Jerry Goldsmith, martial arts coordinating by Steve Seagal. Featuring Toshiro Mifune and star of URBAN COWBOY, Scott Glenn.

Ahhhh The Challenge is a great one.

Would make a good double bill with Lambert's The Hidden.

So can we do the 90's now?

Let's do 90s comedies first. to mix it up a bit.

101. The Challenge (Frankenheimer, 1982)

That is one deadly handsome list.

So it's gonna be like that, is it.

102: A Better Tomorrow (Woo, 1986)

I don't think it's going too far to say that this is the movie that changed everything. If Penn and Peckinpah rendered bloodshed balletic in the '60s, Woo and Hark brought it to the ballroom in the '80s.

104) Cyclone (Fred Olen Ray 1987) Heather Thomas, must keep the supercycle...Cyclone, away from the people who murdered her boyfriend!  Sure, it is truly a goofball film, but still, it stars a...Fall Girl!

106. A Better Tomorrow II (Woo, 1987)

The first one was influential, but holy fuck, the action level in this one teabags the original in the face. Sure, it has ridiculous moments like the EAT THE RICE! scene and some of the dramatic beats, but for genre fans, as well as activists of vigilantism and the Second Amendment, it's better than porn.

'The Challenge' is ACES.  Nice one, Molt.

Yeah, it kicks so much ass. That climactic action sequence is off the fucking charts.

107. Missing in Action (1984) dir. Joseph Zito

Not as good as Delta Force, but Norris's Braddock movies have their own weird 80's charm. Also, watching him kick things is hilarious.

Like a bolt of lightning out of nowhere I suddenly remembered my 1981 Golan directed introduction to Sho Kosugi "Enter the Ninja".  I'm guessing a rewatch would be unkind in relation to my fond memories, and in 1981 I certainly didn't have any idea who Franco Nero was, but thanks to Showtime I must have watched this a dozen times in my formative years.

108. The Punisher (1989)
