Cinematic Shots Heard Round The World

Thread Starter

Very simply, the best, most effective/affective uses of the single gunshot.

For example:

The Fly: Veronica giving Seth his last request

Videodrome: "Long live the new flesh." Smile. BOOM. Cut to black.

The Untouchables: "Take him." BOOM. ".....two." Just badass.

The Warriors: Luther shooting Cyrus. One of the most amazing, rabble-rousing anarchic moments, and suddenly it flatlines with that shot.

Observe and Report: Ronnie taking down the flasher. The fun, quirky humor of that chase prior, that shot happens, and all of it just turns black as hell. And yet, still fucking hilarious.

The Godfather: Because fuck you, it's my thread, I'm gonna cheat and run with Michael shooting Solozzo and the cop in the restaurant. Two shots, but two of the most meaningful shots in film history. Those two shots pretty much begin The Godfather in earnest.

Go for it.

I'll try and avoid spoiler territory...

'To Live and Die in L.A.'...the William Peterson moment.  Holy shit, I didn't see that one coming, especially not with the third act just getting started.

'Cop'...the ending.  'I'm not a cop anymore so FUCK YOU'.

'Raiders of the Lost Ark'.  What's this guy with a whip?  Ah, fuck it...BLAM.

'Lawrence of Arabia'  Lawrence executing Cassim in order to preserve the alliance between Omar Sharif and Anthony Quinn.  He has to kill the man that he personally rescued in the desert.  It forever changes him.

"Keep your loving brother happy."

Older bro kicks Harmonica to the ground. Flashback over. Fucking BLAM

Oldboy: Lee Woo-Jin's victory. Just a really amazing piece of work, making you almost sympathise with this complete monster of a man, and then the moment itself is cold and so clinical.

"You know when I was your age, I went out to fishing with all my brothers and my father, and everybody. And I was, I was the only one who caught a fish. Nobody else could catch one except me. You know how I did it? Every time I put the line in the water I said a Hail Mary and every time I said a Hail Mary I caught a fish. You believe that? It's true, that's the secret. You wanna try it when we go out on the lake?"

I am going to pull the cheat on this one, but it is one of those moments I didn't believe the film was going there. The Mist.

Other allowed cheats here include Ollie putting a bullet in Mrs. Carmody.

Clint Eastwood has some great ones. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and Dirty Harry come to mind immediately.

I remember watching this without any warning that it was coming. I had missed most of the Chewer discussion about it. I kept saying outloud, "No way...He isn't going to do it. BANG! Holy Shit! OMG!"

FYI Mike, just saying "spoiler" isn't nearly as helpful as "spoiler for X".

It's, you know, just a general spoiler.

I'm so happy The Third Man is playing in 35mm this Saturday. I've haven't popped my criterion blu-ray in for quite a while and it demands to be seen on film.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I can't think of a better moment than Holly Martin's final confrontation beneath the streets of Vienna.

"Martins! don't take any chances, if you see him, shoot!"

Haha, for a split second I thought, "Hey! I don't remember Henry Fonda shooting anyone in On Golden Pond".

X2 when Wolverine takes a bullet to the head

There are those ones where the guy you've been following for the whole movie gets blown away at the end- Easy Rider, Electra Glide in Blue, Get Carter (screw spoilers, you should have seen these already). But NONE of them do it for me like Romero.

"Go get him. That's another one for the fire."

Bravo,Disciple, none of the deaths in any of Romero's "Dead" films  hit me the way Ben's did.

And Ash, X2? Really? I mean, I think it's a great movie and Logan getting the bullet in the head is an awesome moment and everything, but it's hardly cinematic brilliance. Not to mention the fact that it eventually led us to "Memory-Erasing Adamantium Bullets" in X-Men Origins. God, I hated that movie...

Sergio Corbucci's The Great Silence:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Not only does the hero get shot down at the end (which is almost unheard of in a Western), but they also kill his love interest. That's hardcore!

The beginning of the shootout in the criminally underrated Open Range opens beautifully.

Costner walking up to an armed group of men: You the one that shot our friend?

Asshole: That's right. Shot the boy, too. And I enjoyed it.

BAM! Right between the eyes.

No bullshit, no more mouthing off, just Costner quickdrawing and dropping the sumbitch. The other guys are so at a loss that Costner and Duvall get a few extra seconds and take down two more. Great stuff.
