FRANCHISE ME: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Proof that you can't keep a good ape down.

I said it in the post-release thread and I'll say it again in here:

It probably wasn't intentional, but the "Get your stinking paws off me" line actually served to enhance Caesar's big moment for me.  The blatant reference got me laughing only for Caesar's response to immediately shut me up with an "Oh shit..."  It was an emotional rollercoaster!  A ROLLERCOASTER!!!

Another great read!

I REALLY need to go see this.

I'll cop to not reading this last article since I've yet to see Rise, but to me, these articles are the most entertaining currently on the site.  Great, great work and I can't wait to see what's next.  Out of curiosity, what franchise is next?

Fantastic series and I agree with your assessment of what made the latest Apes movie so good.   Respect for the material really elevates this movie.   Agreed about your series rankings too.   If the human characters were just a bit more fleshed out, we'd be having a serious sacriligious debate about whether "Rise" actually exceeds "Planet" in stature.   Right now it's really damn close but "Planet" edges it out...barely.

As for sequels , I REALLY want to see the modern ape city that's depicted in the novel and the end of the Burton remake.   Maybe make some changes that make sense for an ape society but I want electricity, tall buildings, movies, etc.   It could be fascinating if done right.

As for the next franchise, maybe Star Trek movies (and just the movies).

He's doing all the Bowery Boys/Dead End Kids movies next. Slated to run through Q4 2016.

As much as I want you to do Killer Tomatoes next, as per the comments suggestion, I can't help but think of how interesting it is for you to observe the wider cultural impact of these films, which I think you implicitly did in this run of Apes movies. Great, great work.

Though now that I think about it, Killer Tomatoes would be good. Toxic Avenger would be GREAT.

Hey, I'm in (the background of one shot of) the original Killer Tomatoes (went to the same high school as the filmmakers).

Actual suggestions: the Dirty Harry films (the culture shifts around Clint through the years), or the Jack Ryan films (the contrasts of three different leads in four films--so far).

Aces!

Really, I wouldn't mind seeing Halloween or Terminator done at some point. Again, great series.

Jesus. How many movies is that even? Like 60?

As for what's next... still pondering. I'm planning to do HALLOWEEN in October. I'd like to do something accessible again (ie, now isn't the time for CHILDREN OF THE CORN or PUPPET MASTER).

Counting the various studio and group name changes, 89. Get crackin'.

Meatballs!

CARRY ON.

Pink Panther might be fun.

BRING IT ON.

Or to switch it up a bit from horror and comedies and sci-fi, how about SNIPER?  There are four movies now, so it should be enough, right?

As I said on Facebook, I'm waiting for the stage musical of BRING IT ON to come to LA this fall (if the lawsuit kills it, obviously that will change things).

Now may not be the time, but I'd really love to read Joshua's take on the entire HELLRAISER series at some point.

P.S. Franchise Me is my favorite regular feature at CHUD, and it's really not even close. Love these things.

HELLRAISER will most certainly happen at some point. But that will be a long, painful journey.

I was also thinking of maybe doing something older. Possibly the Larry Talbot (aka, The Wolf Man) series.

Kidding, but seriously, SNIPER.

I just finished watching all of the available HELLRAISER films, and as bad as they are, I think you'll have fun with them.

I'd like to second the idea of the Dirty Harry series. I recently rewatched them all and it's quite fun to see how the series shifted around with the times a bit. I think it would make a nice companion piece to the Death Wish films as well.

One of the discs had a play all function for all of the trailers and you can just see the times change with them. Just compare the Dirty Harry trailer with the one for The Dead Pool:

I assume you're gonna sit on Superman until the Snyder flick.

Man With No Name trilogy?

Smokey and the Bandit, and you have to include the weird made for TV shit.

The Frankenstein series might be fun.

I've been trying to decide how I'd do Superman or Batman, considering that there have been a variety of TV shows for both and all those straight to video animated movies. Not sure where to draw the line exactly.

Well, I just marathoned your entire coverage of the Apes franchise Josh and have to say that was one of the more enjoyable chud column reads I've had in a while.

Kudos sir.

You haven't seen Hellraiser: Revelations.  You'll take this back after you do.

I love Hellraiser, flawed as that franchise is, and Revelations made me want to end my pitiful existence.

What about Elm Street?  It's a popular franchise.  It's not a seasonal-theme horror film, so it doesn't match any particular date.  And there's even a TV series.

Present day me votes Rocky, but my 12 year old self votes for American Ninja.

It's so easy to default to the horror stuff, but the non-horror is a bigger challenge (since so many horror sequels are just rehashes), but Rocky's mostly rehash, so who knows.

Exorcist (fun ending there with the prequel do-over)

Mad Max (fewer films, easier hurdle)

Rambo

Texas Chain Saw

Romero's Dead films

Ilsa

Mission: Impossible (timely)

Re-Animator

For a truly gruelling experience:

Left Behind.

I'm sure there are enough of them, and what with the rise of the religious right it's kind of topical.

Never thought of that, brilliant!

The only downside of course being that Josh would have to subject himself tot he fucking things.

Oh man. LEFT BEHIND. That's a good one. Hmmm...

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE is tempting as well.

EDIT: Oh wait, I thought MI4 was coming out this month. December.

I'd love to see you tackle something like The Lone Wolf and Cub series, or if you're really fucking nuts the original Zatoichi run.

Think I've got my next one chosen. Keeping it a secret though.

But definite looks to the fall... October: HALLOWEENs. November: Motherfuckin' THE MUPPETS.

I like the idea of the Frankenstein series, but that raises the question: Which Frankenstein series?  The Universal flicks represent a fascinating range, from genius to cheap, cheesy pulp, BUT they've been written about 100,000,000 times, and are really best analyzed in the context of the Dracula and Wolfman films, too.  On the other hand, the Hammer Frankenstein flicks, while including nothing as brilliant as the best of the Universals, and a couple of real pieces of junk (Horror of Frankenstein in particular, but my kind words for Evil of Frankenstein barely extend beyond one clever camera set-up), are more self-contained, and explore a very broad range of stories, themes, and werido monster concepts.

Yeah, I'm casting a vote for some Hammer Frankenstein fun in the near future.  Or, if you need a short series to break between some of the longer ones, maybe Hammer's Karnstein trilogy.

As the resident Halloween geek on the board -- you reviewing the Producer's Cut of H6?

I too am a huge HALLOWEEN fan, but really there's so little to say about them. First one's a classic. 2nd hospital. Third one is batshit and no Michael Myers. 4 and 5 happen Danielle Harris. Druids. Jamie Lee Curtis comes back. Oh wait, she's dead. Bustah Rhymes trick or treat muthafucka. Rob Zombie and rednecks. Rob Zombie goes apeshit hobo Myers white horse. The End?

The sheer craziness as Dimension tries to capitalize on every popular trend at the time of each sequel's release is fun.

-Curse of Michael Myers follows the Freddy's Dead/Jason Goes to Hell backstory function.

-H20 thrives off Scream.

-Resurrection is totally aiming at the Blair Witch market.

-"Remakes are in!  Let's make one before the trend dies!"

I'm also for the Hammer Frankenstein series.  Too fascinating.  It keeps veering in different directions, both good and bad.  How many franchises weather a wrong-headed reboot only to return to the original director and star for one last hurrah?

I'm down for whatever, Josh.  That said, I really dig the idea of you doing the Larry Talbot films!

The Hammer Frankenstein series is a really great idea. Peter Cushing is so good in those films. The films themselves vary in quality, but I'd go to hell and back with Cushing by my side.
