Jeremy takes a pretty in-depth look at Disney's retelling of Rapunzel. Wait...what?

Great great great look into a character that I found interesting but not all that threatening as a villain.

If anyone is interested, here is a blog entry about how that character developed throughout the production of the film by one of Tangled's story artists.

This was Glen Keane's passion project for years.  He suffered a stroke during the troubled production that resulted in the two directors that are credited now.  From what I've heard, the stroke was due to the constant retooling the film went through.  As we all know, The Princess and the Frog wasn't the successful return to form that Disney had hoped for, which didn't help this project come to completion as Rapunzel as it was originally intended to.

From what I've heard, Keane's original storyreel for his true vision of Rapunzel was to die for.  I guess we'll never see that version where Rapunzel was allowed to be the star of her own film.  It resulted in a fun buddy/romance picture with a character the boys could root for!  And who at Disney loves buddy pictures like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, and Up?

All of the old fairy tails, especially in their non Disneyfied versions, have all sorts of interesting social and psychosexual stuff not so much in the subtext rather than bursting through the surface.

Yeah I've heard about the original Grimm tales, but haven't made a point yet to go back and read them.  Perhaps I should.  And Joon - so THAT'S what you meant when you posted "Hail to the Keane" on my Facebook.  hahaha.  That does sound really interesting, I'll need to dig up on it a bit.  When I was image searching for the poster to put in the banner I saw a few that said "RAPUNZEL" in the same text treatment, I was curious what that was all about.

Like Mcnooj, I remember those early hints that Rapunzel was going to be something magical, and when it appeared that it had been transformed into some kind of modernized pop-culture Shrek knockoff, I lost interest. I was surprised by the good reviews, and when I watched it with my niece and nephew, I was amazed at how engaging it was. Best non-Pixar Disney toon in quite some time.

If only the songs didn't suck so hard.
