Xenoblade Chronicles

Also known as that game Nintendo are fucking retards for not releasing in North America, just cause. Seriously, so much loving praise is heaped onto this jrpg. Is it the forbidden fruit effect that makes me want to check this out? Then there's that game blog that wrote out a full fledged guide to hack your Wii so you can import it from Europe. Nintendo's official stance is to see how sales are for the European release before deciding anything. Which is just idiotic. The hardcore gamer set will have imported the game by then and have hacked their Wii's, which has a side effect of opening the doors to software piracy, the people who would have bought it had to jump through some hoops to get their hands on it. They have no problems releasing garbageware filling landfills here and there, but decide not to publish one of the most anticipated titles (and currently highly reviewed) on their ailing platform...dumb.

Some sample snippets of reviews out there on the internets:
Quote:
Monolith provides the biggest and most ambitious game on Wii by a long-shot. Xenoblade Chronicles reignites the JRPG and adventure genres in one classy swoop; that this grandiose spectacle is under the banner of Nintendo is the cherry on top.

Now Monolith Soft's grand Xenoblade Chronicles has arrived, bringing with it an sterling soundtrack, a phenomenal visual impact, vast amount of customisation, intriguing story and massive value for money.

Xenoblade Chronicles is like a collage of all the best elements taken from the JRPGs that came out in the 2000's. It has everything to become a cult RPG, including a release platform that doesn't really suit the genre. So, even though its not HD, its numerous qualities make it a must-have for all JRPG fans who didn't yet commit suicide because of all the disappointments of this generation.

What, people committed suicide because of Final Fantasy 13, lol.

It's a
potent return to form for Takahashi, then, a glowing comeback for the Japanese RPG, and an injection of creativity for some tired hardware. Xenoblade Chronicles manages to impress, enrich and, best of all, inspire wonder.

...

European chewers, have any of your checked this out yet? Any worthwhile impressions? Fuck it, I just placed an order to import the bugger.

If Nintendo of America doesn't change its stance by the end of the year, I'm afraid I'll be joining you in importing this. Goddamnit Nintendo.

Game is extremely good, so far. The story's only standard stuff, but the world is well-put-together, and the gameplay is excellent. The designers have managed to ditch pretty much everything wrong with JRPGs, and there's an insane amount of polish and detail to it.

I'd be all over this one for sure, but NOOOOOOOOOO...  The lack of a release here in the states is puzzling, and mostly just frustrating.  Good RPGs on the Wii are scarce, and they were probably a dying breed from day 1.  Hopefully I'll be able to play this one someday.  The last JRPG I messed with on the Wii was Arc Rise Fantasia, and the core game is solid/good enough, if a bit generic (not that it bothers me at all), but it is almost completely undone by what has to be some of the WORST voice acting in recent memory.  Not sure what they were thinking there...

Took two weeks but it was finally delivered to my door via Game UK. Only devoted a couple of hours to it tonight, but this will consume my long weekend. The music is great; calming folksy sound gives off Bastion vibes. Graphically this isn't going to wow people due to the wii's limited hardware, but the scope and scale of freely wandering around is nice. Haven't bothered with the storyline just yet. I got sucked into doing all the side quests I keep stumbling upon. I'm grateful they don't require you to trudge back to the quest giver when you've completed some of the fetch quests; especially with the day/night cycle where certain npc's are only available at any given time. I also dig the trade system in place...and also love the fact that if you're trading an item too high a value compared to what you're asking for, they'll feel guilty and throw in an extra item. The whole game is streamlined for ease of use, with adequate tutorial systems in place explaining things. The interface lets you get to what you want to do. Having a save anywhere option is also a nice touch.

Combat is easy enough to figure out as you maneuver about in real time for some of the special moves. And hey, no god damned random battles - fuck yeah to that. Walked up this weird ramp thing and see a giant bird; transport, something I can talk to...nope instant death. You and me bird have an appointment down the road.

So far the game hasn't done one thing to turn me off. Aside from Lost Odyssey I haven't really gotten sucked into a jrpg to want to keep playing it. Whether it's annoying characters or meh storylines. So far it's been a pleasant experience that reminds me of playing Skies of Arcadia on the dreamcast way back when...look forward to whatever's out there beyond the first town area.

This got an official release in Australia and I grabbed my copy yesterday. So far it seems quite similar to FFXII with the whole single player MMO thing going on. There's a lotfor me to like here with copious side quests etc.

I picked up a healer character last night and now I have the MMO Holy Trinity in place (tank, DPS and heals). Really loving thie game. Has been a bit easy since I was compulsive about side quests and I'm overleveling most of the new areas I go to (though I did die on the last boss I fought).

The story is really well done. I love the way the 'visions' work in the cutscenes and the gameplay. Reyn and Shulk being best pals also works well. Evil british robot voices are equal parts too silly and kinda awesome.

As much as I enjoyed/tolerated FFXIII, Xenoblade really makes me wonder what Square could have done if they had of embraced the FFXII model a bit more closely when the made their PS3 entry.
