Deal struck to make classic filmmakers work more available for remakes.

I can't get too worked up about this. The basis for films like The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail, The Idiot, The Lower Depths, Throne of Blood, and Ran are public domain in the first place. You can buy the rights to Sanshiro Sugata, High and Low, and The Quiet Duel from the original rights holders. Dreams is a freely available idea. And it isn't like there aren't umpteen variations on Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and Yojimbo anyways. Heck, The Hidden Fortress has one high profile "rip off".

Other than Ikiru, possibly Stray Dog, and maybe Drunken Angel, what's really out there that is a) an untouchable classic and b) has commercial appeal that you can't just do a variation on anyways. Someone taking another crack at One Wonderful Sunday or Scandal wouldn't get me worked up in the slightest.

I only get worked up over one thing. That is a filmmaker who made a few perfect films they can't be remade in any decent way.

Ran, Rashomon the list goes on and on. To those who say c'mon think of someone remaking Raiders or Jurassic Park or Fight Club.

Shit doesn't need to happen.
