Ads on CHUD/crashing

I know this tends to be a sensitive subject, and I feel bad because I don't have enough information to be helpful, but since I know I'm not the only one having the issue I figured I'd put something out there.  When I visit CHUD from work I have no options but to use an older IE browser.  Visiting has been more and more difficult lately, however, as there seems to be an ad or ads that causes my browser to hang up completely.  I don't even get a legitimate crash that I can go back to and point to the exact cause.  Essentially IE just continues to seek some data but freezes out my ability to do anything (I can't stop, refresh, back up).  The only option is to go into task manager and kill IE and start over.

Now sometimes I don't have this happen.  Sometimes it happens 3-4 times in a row.  More than once I've wanted to post something and given up because it just wasn't worth the frustration.

I don't think this is responsible for a huge amount of board downturn, but I'm pretty sure it can't help.  I don't want to point at ads like they're bad, and I don't want CHUD to not be capturing some available ad revenue, but if something is driving traffic away from the site at times that can be just as big an issue.

I've seen other people post in other threads about the same thing.  Is this a known issue that is being worked on?

^ - exactally. Word for word for me as well.

Exactly my situation during the work day. I'm forced to use IE (8, I think), and while I can see articles on the front page, trying to get to the forums causes immediate and consistent freezing. Bottom of my screen says its downloading some kind of PNG file almost every time.

Thanks for posting this, A-Pathetic. I'm hating that I can't access the boards during the day, and that it seems like it would be a fixable problem. (I really wish I could use Firefox at work, but ain't gonna happen.)

I too have similar issues. I hate my job, CHUD keeps me sane.

So many Firefoxers and Chromistas around that I don't think many of us have run into this, but I'll start digging to see what we can do...

GAH - sorry guys, I've been distracted and away from the boards for a few days so I hadn't seen this.  I'll get on it ASAP and we'll see if we can't knock it out.  Just for clarity's sake, do any of you remember if you saw something along the lines of "Waiting for cdn.blahblahblah" in the status thingie?

It's been better today and yesterday, but it was definitely an ad image or something or other that killed IE. Most of the week it was a PNG - from cdn.ad or something? Today it froze up a few times, but I was also able to motor around a bit more. Mon-Weds, once I got past the initial Community page, it was McMurdo every time.

Disco.  We'll get it addressed.  Super sorry for the inconveniences, fellas.

Not sure what you changed, but for me at least I haven't crashed at all today so thank you.

When can we address the larger issue of workplaces only using IE?

I spoke too soon.  Today is as bad as it's ever been, it seems to hang up on some fbchannel thing?  I can't see all of what it's trying to load, but the Google ads seem to load without an issue and this fbchannel thing seems to freeze everything for me.

I pretty much can't go on the boards using IE either.  Crashes almost every time.  Been like this for almost about a month now.  Main site works fine though.

I use Firefox, and every time I come here the screen freezes and I get a pop-up about a script that has stopped working.  Only happens when I'm here.

Sort of cross-posting, but using IE during the day again - forums are freezing. Main site works just fine, but once I get past the main Community page, everything freezes, and I have to use MS Task Manager to shut down the browser.

To be fair though, Internet Explorer is horrible. 99% percent of web-related issues with my company are due to use of IE and not other, normally functioning browsers. I chalk it up to a bunch of designers that are not communicating with each other. It's too bad a vast majority of Internet users use IE. Such is life. Perhaps if use a different browser these problems would be alleviated?

While it's true that IE blows goats, up until recently I've been able to read and post on the forums using IE without an extended or frequent problem. And many of us HAVE to use IE during work hours. The obvious solution is to not lurk/post from work, but that also means the community is getting less traffic, etc.

I totally understand. Many of my clients have no choice but to use IE and it periodically causes me significant agitation. I'll put on my armchair IT hat and ask if you recently upgraded to IE 9? It has bugs/ incorrect coding that actually fucks up pages that previously functioned normally with 8, mostly in relation to opening new windows, etc. (at least in my experience with some sites I work with). Other than that, I have no idea except to say IE really sucks, and it's sort of baffling how they're not getting their shit together, but don't let that stop you from posting from work! You must not be deterred! :)

Hell, my work just barely upgraded to 8.  We won't see 9 for a year at best.  Today has been the worst day in a while with these forums hanging up the browser, too.  Luckily it's really slow right now so I have the time to kill the browser in task manager a few times to try to get a post in, but it's really pretty frustrating.
