The Movies that should be out on blu-ray, or hell anything but whatever it's on at the moment

Saw a need for this, and I say have at it.

One of the great perks of smaller films, or older films, is they hopefully get some sort of restoration. This allows future generations to enjoy it as well.

Then we also have the idea of the theater coming home. The slow abolishing of the traditional movie theater.  Should we trade one for the other?

I say yes! I like to enjoy a movie in quiet, and take it in. That said, I hate missing a moment, and the bladder has to sometimes win, so god bless the pause button.

Oh and movies I'd like to watch: The Three Amigos, Brazil, Unaltered Star Wars OT (please don't have the thread spill into this)

So like I said, have at it. really

Hey, Steve? Anytime you wanna drop Schindler's List, Catch Me If You Can, and Munich on us in high def, you're welcome to do so.

Same goes for Jeunet, Re: City of Lost Children and Very Long Engagement.

I'm just going to go on whining about getting a Fright Night  blu-ray until someone finally pays attention.  How one wasn't released to coincide with the remake's release, I'll never know.

Hell at least that got a real DVD release. Fright Night 2 only got a fullscreen release.

The Insider.  C'mon, Mannnnnnnn!  I need it!

Would appreciate it if Disney got off their asses on an Only Yesterday release. Seriously, not even a DVD release after all this time? TCM showed it as part of their Miyazaki tribute a few years ago, and that was that.

Yeahhh, I'm gonna need that Rocketeer blu-ray pretty soon, mmkay?

Since I'm probably the only person in the world that would pay for it, I doubt that The Fortune will ever show up on Region 1 DVD (or, if it ever did, that it will never come back into print), but that movie just hits all my stupid funny places time and time again.

Red River

McCabe & Mrs Miller

Jeremiah Johnson

The 3 James Dean films

A restored L.A. Confidential (the present release is shite)

My top 5:

The Abyss. Two disc, with all the extras ported over from the special edition DVD.

Buckaroo Banzi. Done right, not as some slapped together Best Buy exclusive.

Titain A.E. Seriously, I adore the movie that bombed so hard it pretty much shut down Fox Animation Studios.

Explorers. I know everyone loves Gremlins, but this is my favorite Dante film.

My Science Project. I don't know if this even made it to DVD, but it has Fisher Stevens, a cool car, and Donna from La Bamba as a hot nerd. If your feeling down, it's like hot chocolate in movie form.

And Jaws, and the first 3 Indy's. I mean come on! I remember Spielberg being a big proponent of blu when the high def war started how come it has taken so good damn long for him to release his best films?

Oh?  What's wrong with it?  I thought it was a pretty well put together blu-ray release.

It's little more than an upgraded DVD. I was so disappointed by the blu image that I compared it with the old DVD & found there was very little difference, I've found this to be the case with a number of Warner blu releases of recent films (Unforgiven comes to mind).

How big is your TV?  I think the picture is just fine.  It's not mind-blowingly sharp, but it seems to be honest to the source.  I'd rather it be that than artificially sharpened.

I was under the impression that Warner releases have been pretty good about solid transfers.

My screen is large enough to appreciate the fine blu details of Casablanca, 2001, Blade Runner, TDK etc. Like I said, LA Confidential's blu image is nearly indistinguishable from the DVD & with modern releases, my experience has been that it's a total crap shoot with regard to transfer quality. Oceans 11 looks pretty great but Oceans 12 looks exactly like the DVD, artifacts & all. Why? Hell if I know.

Ha, so random!  This movie popped into my head for the first time (and apropos of nothing) in, like, 20 years.  I'd love to see it again just for old time's sake.

That's tricky, Art, because the fine details you mention in your examples have several advantages.

Casablanca is an old enough classic that warranted a beautiful restoration.  2001 was shot on 70mm.  Blade Runner got an immaculate restoration with the Final Cut.  TDK had the gorgeous IMAX sequences (though the 35mm footage WAS artificially sharpened).

LA Confidential, classic as it is, isn't quite old enough to warrant a complete remastering.  And I think its soft look is intentional.

But still... now I want to compare my DVD and blu-ray for LA Confidential.  Hahahaha

You're right & I am in no way an expert on transfer quality, but as a consumer, I'm still pretty underwhelmed by the LA Confidential blu. Even recent WB blus like The Aviator & Constantine look better.

I dunno..maybe I've just been spoiled by Criterion. You've ruined me for all other blu releases, you fancy bastards!

Criterion is always ruining things for everybody!

What's a brother gotta do around here to get a Black Hole blu in the pipeline?

So I send out the invites for my birthday screening, get the Blu player set up, and then I find out Singin' In the Rain isn't scheduled for a release until next year.

There are a few bits of odd cinema that I would like in HD:

The Entity

From Beyond

Society

Vertigo, Rear Window, and Jaws. Get your shit together, Universal.

To be fair, in the last year we got A.I., Minority Report, War of the Worlds, The Color Purple, and Saving Private Ryan. Jaws and Jurassic Park are being worked as we speak. So, it's not like he's been sitting on his ass. Still, I think about HD Munich, and I need a bib.

Grosse Pointe Blank (one of my faves, obviously, and the DVD's non-anamorphic).

And in no particular order: Eraserhead, Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, Pink Floyd: The Wall, Vertigo, 1941 (also non-ana DVD), the Indy trilogy, The Reflecting Skin, The Passion of Darkly Noon, and also some of the Universal horror classics would be fine.

That's off the top of my head. I guarantee I'll think of others.

I've said it before, but I'm not plunking down for a 3D system until we get '50s stereo classics like Creature From the Black Lagoon, Dial M For Murder, Inferno, and House of Wax.

And speaking of Miyazaki:  Why isn't Princess Mononoke on blu yet?

Iron Giant

Brotherhood of the Wolf.  That crossfade in hi-def?  Yes please.

Also, Criterion needs to stop fucking around and release Sorcerer already,

They're all out on Blu, and the first three are together in a set, but is it sad of me to want a Blu-ray box set of the four Resident Evil flicks?

They tend to go down best in one "sweet cruddy lump," to quote David Morrell in First Blood.

The Big Blue- The Eric Serra version please

Criterion blurays I wish existed:

Branaugh's Henry V

George Pal's The Time Machine

Nicholas Meyer's Time After Time

I Come in Peace

End of thread.

The Devils (Ken Russell). WB was to have released it back in 2008 but pulled it at the last moment. Still have my worn VHS copy but would be nice to see a better copy on dvd or blu-ray..

Extra credit to them for not messing with the box art. Though it would be nice to see the Art Deco poster represented.

Decent DVDs/Blus with commentaries or *gasp* making-of docs for Meet the Feebles and Dead Alive. I figured new DVDs would pop up post-LotR, but no luck. I think Spies Like Us is still only available Pan and Scan(on DVD anyway, I don't even know if it's on Blu), which isn't cool.

Yeah, didn't Meet the Feebles come out on the Spanky's House o' DVDs label for like $2.00 with a free bag of potato chips?

It needs a better class of DVD is what I'm saying.

I'd hate to think Feebles and Dead Alive are Old Shame now for the Oscar-winning director.

I'd also like Heavenly Creatures on Blu-ray, seamless branching with a choice between US theatrical and longer NZ version. I hate that the only version we have on digital is the NZ version with the annoying scream at the end. Sue me, the version I first saw is the one I married.

Forgotten Silver as an extra on one of these Blu-rays would be cool too.

Yeah, I was hoping Feebles and DA would get the same love Bad Taste got(on DVD, and presumably Blu one day), but no such luck.

Seconded with extreme prejudice.

Where's LAWRENCE OF FUCKIN' ARABIA already. Seriously, that's an instant upgrade.

The weird thing about Lawrence of Arabia is that Sony used to use footage of a LoA blu-ray menu in action to promote the format.

What the hell happened there?

Best scoop of the week (to me anyway), courtesy of the AV Club's new John Landis interview:

AVC: Could you ever be convinced to do a Three Amigos sequel?

JL: Absolutely. We had a great time making that movie. I have to tell you, literally a month ago, I did a restoration of Three Amigos for Blu-ray. It comes out in November. It is fucking gorgeous. I’m so pleased with it. It looks like three-strip Technicolor. It’s beautiful. Plus, as a bonus, there are about 23 minutes of deleted scenes.

FUCK YES! It should come with a mute invisible cactus.

Hot Damn.  I just recorded Three Amigos in HD a few weeks back and I refuse to let my wife delete it from the DVR.  I did the "male/mail plane" joke the other day when we saw a plane pass over, and astonishingly similar to the movie, no one got it, and they all kept looking up at the plane.

Also forever saved on the DVR: "Worth Winning"  Yeah, I said it.

It's out on DVD as part of the MGM Limited Edition Collection now apparently. Just read an article that mentioned it on Badass.

And I'll go a little Lucas and ask that the obvious wirework be digitally removed. It could be distracting to new viewers and should be an easy fix.

YES to I Come In Peace. Will I get my Dolph Lundgren and Brian Benben commentary, though?

And where the fuck is that Criterion Blu of The Game?

The Abyss last I heard was suppose to be getting a blu-ray release early next year, don't know about the extras though. I hope it's still coming, want to replace the VHS tape I've got.

One I want on blu-ray, on Criterion please! is The Werckmeister Harmonies.
