David wants the extended cut on DVD.

That's what I thought, but check out the first user comment below in that link.  The dude named Simon Gilmore said it's the ABC "safe" extended version.  That's what I was going by when I checked this out.

You are correct- it had TV roots.  It's even 4x3.

I had no idea there was another, even longer cut, then.  All of the scenes that you reference are on this DVD, however.

A Waterworld DVD that's 4x3 is simply unacceptable.  And yeah, I'm not so much as saying there's even a longer cut, just that that one dude said that the extended DVD is the ABC version.  I'm coming at it like, I want the extended cut, without the network TV chopping.  That would be choice.

If we were given a full extended cut, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.  I always liked this film.

Just checked the Region 1 DVD, and it's clearly 1.85:1, 16x9 anamorphic -- though I remember when the ABC cut aired, and was non-letterboxed.

Always hugely enjoyed this flick, both theatrical and extended, and felt it got a worse rep upon release than it deserved -- a bunch of us went to see it theatrically a few days before we headed back to college that August (to see what all the ruckus was about). We had a blast.

And yeah, the edited ABC cut is infinitely preferable to the Costner-slashed theatrical one, but I'm still waiting on a true uncensored version...urination, Tripplehorn butt-double and all. The current BD is theatrical-only, Universal being one of the reigning kings of the double-dip.

This fucker made money -- why not reach into those pockets and pay for a final BD re-edit?

What kills me about that theatrical cut BR release is that they gave it the same cover as the extended edition DVD.

That pissed me off, too. Universal even pulled the exact same stunt with the theatrical-cut Dune BD last year.

Wasn't Universal's new Conan The Barbarian blu-ray the theatrical cut as well? The director's cut is like only a minute longer, would it really have cost that much to upgrade that minute to HD?

The Conan BD, turns out, was basically the International Cut (with the extended final confrontation-sequence, the "Conan-carries-the-Princess-off" ending, etc.), but for some inexplicable reason, the Milius-approved "Moby Dick" scene (Subotai and Conan's discussion at the mounds) was not only cut from the film, but the DVD audio commentary track also re-edited around the cutting.

So, Universal definitely spent some money on it, but in the wrong way. Still haven't heard why this was done, if it was simply a fuck-up on the studio's part, or perhaps something political.

In the DVD commentary, it's made hugely, unequivocally clear by Milius that he reinstated that scene for a reason, and I sent the BD packing back to Amazon right after watching it.

Saw Waterworld with my folks back when it came out, and loved it. Bought the dvd, and still love it. So to clarify, the extended cut dvd is 4x3, or is it 1.85:1 anamorphic?

16x9 anamorphic (on the R1 DVD).

Edited slightly or not, the extended cut is still my "go-to" version -- and the DVD picture quality looks pretty decent upconverted to 1080p. It'll do until a proper BD finally hits.

That's ridiculous. The Moby Dick scene is such a nice little moment. Someone at the studio must really hate it.

More on subject, I don't think I've ever seen Waterworld in full, just bits and pieces of it when it played on TV. My most vivid image of the film is actually from an episode of The Simpsons where Milhouse tries to play Waterworld the arcade game and he has to put in like 19 quarters and all he can do is move Kevin Costner forward like three feet.

Yeah, it's a shame they put the censored ABC cut on the DVD.

But there's an uncut version of the extended edition called "Waterworld - The Ulysses Cut - Revised Edition".

It's an inofficial DVD made by a fan and is exactly what the official DVD should have looked like.

Just google for it and check it out!

Cheers.

I remember first falling in love with WATERWORLD without having seen a single frame of the film. The movie was written up in a book on "bad movies" I'd been given, and I took that book with me to sleep away camp. I spent the entire summer thinking about WATERWORLD, and how incredible it would no doubt be. Literally the first thing I did once I got home and unpacked was to have my mom drive me to rent it

Someday I hope to make a similar journey to pick up the full unedited cut of the film

PS This is the comment I originally wrote on this article, which I will now repaste to the board because that's where I'd originally have posted it had I had the chance:

This is by far one of my favorite films of all time, flaws and all. The flaws I will lay at the feet of Kevin Reynolds, as I’m more than willing to absolve Costner for all the film’s sins. I don’t know if that has any basis in reality (as disastrous casting like that of Enola – the worlds worst and most annoying child actor of all time – is something over which he’d no doubt have had veto power), but his Mariner is one of the most iconic cinema bad asses of the past 30 years and for that he earns my loyalty. The Mariner WAS hard, harder than any normal “hero”, and I respect him for it. Like Enola says: “He doesn’t have a home, or people to care for. He doesn’t have a name…. so death can’t find him. . He’s not afraid of *anything*, men least of all. He’s fast and strong like a big wind. He can hear a hundred miles and see a hundred miles underwater. He can hide in the shadow of the noon sun. He could be right behind you, and you wouldn’t even know it ’til you’re dead”

The music, world building, the little lime tree,  *the amazing trimaran*, all of it is one of a kind and instantly unforgettable. I’m not ashamed to say I’m in love, in a wistful, wildly romantic way with WATERWORLD, though I lament the missed opportunities… it could have been so much better. Had that hurricane not taken out the slaver set (rumored to rival the Atol set in sheer size), how cool would that sequence have been (the set sunk to the bottom of the ocean)? Had Enonla not made you want to gouge your ears out.. had they just combined Helen and Enola into one character… what could have been? I don’t really like Hopper at all either, as he’s so corny it’s just awful… but what if they’d had someone with a real animal menace in the role? Someone who truly seemed like they’d gone crazy from too many years baking under the unrelenting sun of Waterworld?

So yes, it could have been much much better.. but you know what? Most of what is in the extended cut sounds like it would already improve the film by leaps and bounds. I’ve heard rumors that the original true director’s cut was 3+ hours, and if that were to someday hit DVD.. well I think the public at large would have to do a complete reevaluation of the movie. It would no longer be a punch line. As it is, I’ve seen bits and pieces of the TV cut, and even though not all the extra footage is there, what has been added is enough to make for a richer experience and I’d wholeheartedly recommend everyone check it out

Only a site like CHUD would write this article, and I thank you for it. Hopefully someday the misplaced “embarrassment” Universal and Costner feel over this will evaporate, and we’ll see the movie as he originally intended. It’s a damn bloody brilliant near masterpiece, and I am on a quest to see every last minute of it they shot! : )
