She makes me ill.

I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop in this story. Turns out, she's just a meanspirited girl. I can't imagine what it would be like to be out on a date with a girl and have her shun me for whatever my interests might be. Absolutely gross.

The "worst" thing the guy did from what I've seen is take her to the Dahmer one-man show.  But, there's some context lacking so maybe it did seem like a good idea at the time.

Her reaction though, yeesh, that's just horrible.

Did he still play? “Yes.” Strike one. How often? “I’m preparing for a tournament this weekend.” Strike two. Who did he hang out with? “I’ve met all my best friends through Magic.” Strike three.

Now, that's fuckin' shallow.

Gwyneth Paltrow, you've got the week off. I'll be rolling my eyes in disgust to this chick for a while.

I've been following this from inside the Magic community, and the Nerd Rage is terrifying to behold.

What if your interests were heroin and animal torture? But yeah, she's troll.

My Lord, someone posted something shallow and vaguely hypocritical? ON THE INTERNET???  SHOCK AND GA-OH DEAR, MY MONOCLE!  IT'S BROKEN!!!

This "Duh" story in short:

Girl: "Eww, a nerd. Let's write a blog post about him."

Internet: "Shut up, you're ugly. You're also re-awakening my dating PTSD."

Hypocrisy, a blissful ignorance to irony and superficiality by everyone involved. Sums up the dating scene pretty well.

If she thinks this rant is going to open up her dating options, she's got another thing coming. But then, you gotta play the Magic hand your dealt. Something tells me she's going to be blogging a few years from now, begging for the "difficult brown" like Sinead.

To quote a certain Legend... "Shut up, fool!"

My favorite bit is her complaining that him not mentioning Magic on his profile is tantamount to lying.  If I make an online dating profile, do I have to mention that six years ago I drove 500 miles to see a movie?

No, but you might want to mention how many times you saw TDK the opening weekend.

I kid.

I'll make it my headline!

In 1993 I was one of the best water sliders in the world. I qualified for Nationals.

So, after Sara Underwood (G4's former Playmate reporter) said she'd go on a date with him, today WOTC tweeted an offer to fly her to Philly so they could meet (he's playing in a Pro Tour this weekend). Nice.

Yeah im sure that will go well.

I Google'd the Magic nerd, and I'm not being patronizing when I say he needs to grow a pair and aim higher. And not take a girl to a fucking Jeffery Dahmer play. But yeah -- that chick is... not attractive. Apparently, in any sense of the word.

As for OKCupid: the site's a cesspool, and this whole situation is pretty tame, in general. I gave it a shot a while back, and had a string of strange, awkward experiences. Messages from obese women who thought they were cats, and one incredibly, morbidly obese woman whose screen name was "Marmalade Flesh". One girl wanted to discuss with me her obsession with the Ron Perlman "Beauty and the Beast" series, and how much she loved the cartoon Gargoyles because of the sexual tension between the characters.

In retrospect, thinking about that last one kind of hurts my self-esteem...

I hope she wears this geek-approved outfit.

I'm sure him being rich doesn't influence any of these "well, I'd date him!" offers.

Yeah, for all her bitchiness all these douchey retorts kind of make me want to side with her.

"Nerd power!" Fuck off.

I think it's the public nature of the article which is a little off-putting, but I'm with Stel in that the nerdy hate-mob is starting to make me side with her. I mean who hasn't joked about a really fucking awful date they've been on?

Try to blog the encounter into a live action Cathy cartoon was obviously a dick move, but really, it sounds like she let him down fairly easy once she realized that a big portion of the guy's life was devoted to a game she didn't understand and had no interest in.   The part I find weird is that if I found out my date was a world champion in anything, be it Chutes and Ladders or hot dog eating or blindfolded anti-Semitism, I would find that interesting whether I gave a crap about the thing or not.  I would have a million questions.   "Is the competitive Chutes and Ladders circuit dominated by Russians or Chinese*?"  "On a scale of 1-10, how ashamed would you say your father is of you?"  "Do you practice by like closing your eyes and trying to sniff your way toward a matzo ball your friend hid in the backyard?"

Even if the person was awful and I never wanted to see them again, that would be a fascinating evening.

*You can't tell me it's not one or the other.

Can't she be a shitty person and the internet hate-mob have gone too far? Do I really have to side with one or the other?

I have no problem with the fact that his hobby turned her off. My issue with what she did is two-fold. Firstly, her blog imparted a weird fucking message of "i wish i'd googled him more!"... I mean isn't finding out more about a person what ALL first dates are for? So you go out with someone, chat to them, get to know them and either you like them or you don't. She, on the other hand, was so disgusted that she even gave him the time of day that she had to go write this blog. It almost seems like she resents the thought that he tricked her into thinking he was a regular guy.

My other issue is that she fucking named him. Considering his social circle, there was always a good chance that he'd end up reading it and I know that I'd HATE to read an article like this about myself.

Everyone. I don't take issue with the fact that she wasn't interested in him or that she doesn't like magic the gathering. Im sure there are many things she could have not liked him for that wouldn't bother me either considering we all have not liked someone for one reason or another. The shitty part is blogging about it on the internet where EVERYONE can see it including him, his coworkers, friends, family exs ect. It wasn't like he revealed himself to be a racist or a murderer or something or even rude to her, he didn't deserve that. However if she had went to her small group of friends and laughed it up no harm no foul, because yeah who doesn't. I mean it's not like he is a celebrity who opens themselves up to public ridicule.

The fact that she's more bent out of shape over him playing "Magic: The Gathering" than him taking her to see what must be the worst one person show imaginable strikes me as more weird.

Also, you gotta love that she justifies getting on OKCupid while drunk but then continues to hang out there when she is I would assume stone cold sober.

But points where they are due.   She described the online dating scene to a "t".   I got lucky and found my lovely wife online but the chat rooms are notorious sausage fests and most of the dudes who go on there are straight up creepy (and mostly naked).   Fun times.

I'm finding that the creepiest, worst part of the whole story. Whether she's been dickish or not about the gaming aspect, taking a first date (hell, ANY date) to a play about Jeffrey Dahmer strikes me as a deeply unsettling choice. My advice to her would have been to bail immediately after (or during) the play.
