SHARK NIGHT 3D WILL AT LEAST HAVE WORTHWHILE DVD FEATURES

Whether the movie is good or not, mechanical sharks are awesome.

Mechanical sharks? No fucking way! Very cool.

I really want someone go all out with practical creatures, even once. With all the advances that have occurred with materials technology, CAD/CAM methods and miniaturization you could have some pretty spectacular creations given the proper time and budget. I'm disappointed at how easily everyone defaults to CGI.

Wow. Realistic as hell! And I watch every Shark Week show I can.

I love this kind of practical FX attention and skill.

And regret not being able to ride the mechanical shark at the SHARK NIGHT rodeo booth at SDCC.

PG-13 though? Hm. I guess I can always bust out some Thomas Jane & LL Cool J VS mutant makos.

100% agreed, stelios!

My brother is seeing this tomorrow.  If he ends up liking it, that and the fact that the beasties are mechanical might just have my ticket sold in spite of the PG-13 rating.

The shark looks realistic as hell.

So why then do I see fake looking CGI shark all over the trailers when this mechanical shark can do 100% more than Bruce from Jaws?

Uhg!

Because while the animatronics behind them are extraordinary, you're likely going to use them mainly for close-ups, while you employ CGI for complex, high speed attack scenes; it's just a quicker, more pragmatic necessity.

Because they're only used for shots of fins breaking the water and in a scene with a dead shark on the beach. Lame.

There are more practical ways to shoot these scenes. It's easy to just shoot and say "there's a shark behind you" and then hand it over to animators. It's more challenging, but better, to come up with a more realistic approach.

Consider they could have shot the animatronics at 21 frames per second instead of the usual 24, which would have made the shark seem like it was swimming faster in frame.

Cool stuff almost makes me want to buy a ticket almost.

According to my brother, CG sharks account for about 90% of the shots in the film..............so I wouldn't get too excited about this.

Some of the sharks look decent, some are almost laughably bad.  There's only one real "wow" 3D shark shot.  Nobody should be getting excited about this.

It's from the director of the worst Final Destination, of Cellular and Snakes on a Plane. It can't be good, even if in two scenes awesome mechanical sharks are being used.

To give Ellis a tiny bit of credit, from what I have read he didn't direct all of The Final Destination.

Like Hooper, Poltergeist? Who did direct?

I can't find the exact article, but supposedly he was fired over creative differences before shooting ended and had no part in the editing of the film.
