The United States Postal Service has long lived on the financial edge, but it has never been as close to the precipice as it is today: the agency is so low on cash that it will not be able to make a $5.5 billion payment due this month and may have to shut down entirely this winter unless Congress takes emergency action to stabilize its finances.
So the question isn't "Will Congress provide funding to the Post Office in time?" but rather "What shit does the Republicans want this time to keep the mail system going?"
There are definite ways to cut costs and add revenue like allowing Post Offices to sell cell phones and allow shipping of alcohol and tobacco but I'm sure GOP congressmen are going to find ways to make a "crisis" out of this and say that the postal system needs to bust the Unions or privatize. Also more tax cuts for billionaires and other unpopular pet projects would need to pass. After the debt ceiling fight, nothing would surprise me.
