Gaming laptop & desktop recommendations

Thread Starter

So guys, I've been contemplating getting myself a half decent rig for gaming, so I can hook it up to my tv. I haven't gone shopping for a pc in years and am a long way from a spec-understanding techie here. I just want to try to not spend over US$2000 and get the best rig I can to play as many modern and at least near-future pc games as possible for the price. I know no IT gameheads who could build me a rig unfortunately, so it looks like I'm a slave to big business on this one.

I've been looking at some of the Dell Alienware stuff and while it looks very pretty and all that I really dunno what I'm looking at spec-wise to be honest. I guess what I'm looking for is something that'll play a modern pc game of the caliber of a Total War:Shogun 2 smoothly and beautifully.

I dunno, I know I want a rig but am pretty lost on this one as I've been out of pc gaming for so many years, so any help or advice from the chewer reference banks would be appreciated.

Ordering a new computer is pretty sucky.  The last couple of computers I bought, I got from Velocity Micro or CyberPower (on a recommendation from a thread much like this one on these very forums.)  Both experiences were equally annoying.  Maybe I'm just an impatient geek, but I felt like I was being jerked around through the whole process...  But I think it was mostly me.  :P

Anyway, I think Velocity Micro's website was a little easier to navigate.  The CyberPower website has a TON of options, but there's so many different varieties to choose from for each little component, with very little information as to what might differentiate one from the other (thus necessitating further research) that I was actually a little nervous that the computer might show up and not even function.  And I'm actually somewhat knowledgeable about computers.

Not sure how helpful this is, or if either of these companies even ship to the UK.  But there you are!

ETA:  Alienware computers strike me as a bit overpriced, actually.  But that might be a good place to start if you really don't want to mess with a smaller company or with shipping problems.

Edited again to add:  Hold up.  You're in Australia?  Why did I think you were British?  Sorry.

Well, it is now on. The 2011 rolling upgrade operation has begun. A new 560TI is on its way to replace my 285TGX. A CPU + M/B combo is coming in October followed by a second 560TI for SLI in November. Budget permitting I'm hoping for a good SSD at Christmas, too. New hardware feels so good.
