Goose and Maverick burst off the screen. Also, it's in 3D now.

I hate 3D. But its been ages since i last saw TOP GUN. Wouldn't mind seeing it on the big screen.

Also Thin Val Kimer. Where did you go?

I'd certainly go see a re-release of Top Gun, though I'd rather it be 2D.

I'll listen closely on how good the conversion is. If the word is good i'll pay to see it.

I loved Top Gun as a kid. Sadly, I watched it recently after many, many years and it doesn't function on any level other than a target for irony for me. Whether my better cinematic training since I last watched it exposes the movie's flaws or pop culture has completely inundated me to it, it just does not work. At all. I was half expecting this but the degree surprised me.

I don't imagine 3D will add anything to it.

Oh come on, how can you pass up a chance to hear Kenny Loggins blasting in surround sound on the big screen?

Highway......to the.......DANGER ZONE!!!

I'm with Daywalker.  If the conversion is good, I will be paying to see this and will have absolutely no regrets.

Yeah, that's what I thought before I last watched it, too. I'm happy about it either. I really loved it as a kid.

If it leads to a COMMANDO 3D, which'd be the next logical step in newly post-converted revisited homoeroticism, we're in.

Just imagine the pipe sticking out of Bennett... and out of the screen. Fabulous.

Didn't you at least enjoy the dogfights and training scenes, Stelios? I watched it recently and really enjoyed it, apart from the love story.

All this talk makes me wonder if a BLADE RUNNER 3D could work.

I watched it again a couple of years ago and knowing so much more about aerial combat now than I did as a 12 year old the dogfights actually seem fairly ridiculous. They're choreographed to be in close quarters because that makes so much more sense cinematically, so they're still beautiful to watch, but they're still ridiculous. Kind of like how watching Rocky as an adult the boxing is actually comical it's so unrealistic.

Unlike Rocky the love story in Top Gun feels kind of by-the-numbers, but like Rocky the brotherhoods and tensions between the buddies and the rivals still works a treat. I mean, if you try to take it seriously you're a lost cause, but as a fun high production sports movie with lashings of jingo it still pops.

Oh, by the way Blue Lou ... I'm not Stelios. I just felt like hijacking the question.

*Insert obligatory Volleyball Scene in 3D joke here*

But seriously, I don't think Top Gun is a very good movie. Maybe that makes me one of those unappreciative young punks (the movie is approximately my age, after all). I've only watched it all the way through once with an old college roommate and the most interesting thing we got out of it was that the opening was shot like porn for F-14s.

Rick Rossovich's abs were no joke.

Oh yeah Bucho, my brain knows that the dogfights are ridiculous, but when I am watching them I don't care.   Partly because I know it is real planes up there doing it.   As opposed to meaningless CGI.   Even though I know the Cruiser is not flying the plane, someone is, and it's thrilling.   It's like the stunt in RAIDERS when Indy goes under the Truck.   You know it's not Harrison, but someone is down there risking his neck.

So weird that the film's kinda meathead, yet it's basically about a bunch of nerd jocks at a school.  A school for the best fighter pilots, but a school nonetheless.

There are even locker room scenes for christsakes.

Watching it this year I got the impression that the actual plane footage was just stuff that had been released to the film by the Airforce, because all of the plane movements seem completely divorced from the actual action or has the action kind of having to explain that. Plus the difference in film stock.

I've never enjoyed Top Gun aside from that opening Faltermeyer theme.

Yup. The dogfights look cool but they're absolute crock. Just a bunch of F-14s and F-5s doing split-s maneuvers. It's weird. That movie was a huge part in me becoming an aviation nerd, but in so doing it laid bare just how stupid the fights were.

A lot of the time it's not even that, they're either shot more like chase scenes than aerial combat or they're just a line up of two or three planes slowly waggling their wings like F1 cars on a warm up lap. They do a good job of establishing the geography of the situation and showing who has whose six but they don't look like fights. Nevermind that even close range jet combat takes place at far greater distances between opponents than how Top Gun portrays it.

But then there's a long history of fight scenes in cinema - even in classics like Rocky - not looking like real fights, so I can't begrudge Tony Scott too much for not making some of the the most expensive fight scenes ever drip with verisimilitude.

You say that like snot isn't delicious.

I never even liked it as a kid. Why would I? It's boring.
