28 WEEKS LATER DIRECTOR UPGRADES FROM ZOMBIES TO IMMORTALS

There can be many reboots, but only one HIGHLANDER director.

Yes, but will it have a Scottish actor playing an Egyptian character named Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez?

I liked the anecdote here. Brings back some memories of college. Sword catalogs and overpriced vhs sets!

Speaking of Scots and 28 WEEKS LATER, should we expect to see Robert Carlyle as Ramirez?

Despite not directing my favourite bit of the film, I believe Boyle helmed the opening in the cottage, I felt that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo really shot the shit out of 28 WEEKS LATER. It's the horrible script which kind of took it out at it's legs. INTACTO is bonkers and great, so I'm hoping that with something a little less grounded like HIGHLANDER we might get a really fun film.

Kinda agree here. I watched the 28 sequel and THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake sequel in the same weekend. Only one of them managed to not offend my "standards".

I'm really hoping that the semi-recent trend to take the sorcery out of S&S is officially laid to rest and they don't de-mystify this franchise. It's really the only thing going for it.

Would the sci-fi origins of the (non-existant) second one count as de-mystifying?

I suppose they could just say that the Immortals are really immortal elf foundlings, but whatever.  Still, I wonder how much they'd even change from the original, other than making the opening scene an MMA fight (with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy!) instead of a wrestling match.  What could you replace Queen with?

I do have to say though, upon watching the original a little while ago, (modern) Connor is kinda a giant douche.  I think they'd probably soften that up a bit for a remake.

Yes.  In Highlander 2: The Quickening's defense though, the rest of the film is so batshit insane (no matter what cut you watch) that it's hard to not give it a pass for trying to make them aliens.  I'll flatout admit that I think the first one is a classic.  I like Highlander: Endgame because it is a good follow-up to the TV series and makes for nice franchise capper.  Highlander 3 is an uninspired rehash of the original, but I don't hate it.  The less said about The Source, the better.

As for Highlander 2.................I love every batshit minute of it, even though it is by definition a shitty sequel.  So bad it's good.

It'll probably be Nickelback or Shinedown..................................unless the producers really ARE telling the truth and actually plan on reusing Queen's music.

You're not keen on seeing all Immortals measured by their Immortichlorians?

Oh and - Kevin McKidd for the new villain, The Kurgen or otherwise.

Ugh the original film is great. Yeah its weird (A frenchman playing a Scot, A Scot playing an Egyptian) but has wonderful elements the Kamen score, Queen music and a wonderful iconic villain in the Kurgan played beautifully by scene eating bastard Clancy Brown.

I thought 28 Weeks was ok. Highlander needs to lie dormant for another 15 years.

Since we're giving him so much hype at the moment, how about they just cast Scott Adkins in the role, let him keep his real accent, and change the name of the film from Highlander to Geezer?

That would be great.

I had a dream about this last night.  I can't remember who was playing Ramirez or Connor in the remake in my head, but Nicolas Cage was The Kurgan.  I literally woke up laughing. biggrin.gif

Too late now, but Neil Marshall was made for this movie.

I like 28 Weeks alllmost as much as the first(other than Carlyle teleporting), and Intacto is rad, but I just feel he's wrong for this.

You know what? I hope they don't hew too closely to the original. In fact I hope they create an entirely new plot -- no Ramirez, no Kurgan, if you have those two I'm just going to keep mentally comparing them to Brown and Connery  -- just keep the general concept and, hell, if you have to expand it to make it more sequel/franchise-friendly do that. Do something fun with it.

As much as I love Highlander the rest of the franchise has largely been terrible-to-mediocre so I see no reason at all to follow the existing "mythology" of the franchise to the letter. What are you worried about, pissing off the posters of highlander-community.com? If you're going to remake a movie be more The Thing and less Rob Zombie's Halloween.

I remember watching JUMPER and thinking they were trying to go for that HIGHLANDER vibe. Instead of Immortals, they were Teleporters. It didn't grab much attention.

The more I've thought about this very good suggestion, the more I want to see Marshall creating the next franchise geeks will go wild over and that'll spawn sequels, tv series and reboots, rather than trying to revive an old one.

I'll take Neil Marshall for this in a heartbeat.

I kinda agree. And really, the guy just can't work fast enough to get to all the projects he's been suggested for. But I think his Conan would have been one for the history books.

Marshall would have been an excellent choice for this and I wouldn't be surprised to find out at some point that he vied for the job.  After all, the man also chased after/was attached to Sherlock Holmes (2009), Predators (2010), Conan the Barbarian (2011), Drive (2011), The Wolverine (2012), and Dune (cancelled).  I'm pretty sure I am forgetting a few as well.

I really hope Marshall can break out at some point, but the fact that NONE of the projects he has announced over the past three years have been made is extremely depressing.......

- Underground

- Sacrilege

- Burst

- The Sword and the Fury

- Eagle's Nest

- Outpost

- Untitled WW2 Alien Invasion Project

- Untitled Assassin Project

In a just world, all of the above would/will see the light of day.  The man has continuously passed over on every studio project he has chased, none of the above projects that have studio homes have gotten off the ground, and he doesn't seem to be close to gaining independent financing for anything either.  Outside of directing an episode for the second season of Games of Thrones (which is cool), he literally has NOTHING in the works as far as I can tell.  At least not anything close to pre-production, that is.  Doomsday bombing and Centurion getting a lackluster limited release certainly hasn't helped his situation, that's for sure.  If he ends up sinking into obscurity directing episodic TV for a living, I might just shoot myself.

As much as it sucks to say it, Neil Marshall's best bet is to finally land a studio project (be it a sequel, remake, reboot, etc.).  If he can knock one (or two) out of the park and have it be a hit, he'll get his shot at crafting the next great franchise or two.......................and at least be able to get consistent funding for his original screenplays.  Until that happens, he'll be lucky to get a new film made every five years or so (if ever).  Sad but true.

If that situation is accurate SD thats one of the reasons I never became a filmmaker. Its crazy the things studios do and demand with talented filmmakers like Neil Marshall.
