Is Johnny Depp playing Barnabas Collins or Michael Jackson?

It's sad that at this stage my reflexive response to this sort of paint by numbers Tim Burton art design is mild revulsion, but when considering the arc of his career, it's hardly surprising. I see this and I feel like the attention to costume/make up detail is less informed by the characters than what's best suited to translate into a kickin' HOT TOPIC tee

I hope the fans of DARK SHADOWS get the movie they always wanted, but for me at least, I couldn't be less interested in this project. My curiosity about the latest Depp/Burton joint is roughly equal to my interest in the next reteaming of Mike Myers and Jay Roach

I'm hoping these are from a dream sequence, or it's makeup that's going to be shot in black & white, or anything that will make that look less ridiculous on screen.

doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo, BUM BUM BUM BUM.

Maybe Depp has reached the Dr. Moreau phase of his Brando homage?

Not sure I'm ready to completely dismiss an entire movie based on a single out of context set photo. Two questionable photos though, and you can fuck right off Tim Burton.

Someone else has pointed out that Barnabas seems to be walking around in daylight there. Could it be sunblock, and not the character's permanent hue?

Ooh, I'd not thought of that. A clever suggestion, and seemingly very possible (it worked for Frost in BLADE). Let's hope that is the case

He looks like the illegitimate spawn of Data and Inspector Gadget.

He seems to be pulling a Dorf to me too. I still maintain zero hopes of this being good though, because fuck Burton.

Somebody check on Phil, this could send him over the edge.

It's genuinely terrible looking. I thought they would goof on the cheesiness of the show - Barnabas walked among the "normal" cast looking like this:

But if that's what they're doing they really, really overshot the mark. I can't presume to tell you what the fuck is going on in that photo.  Spy pics are never representative of what we see in the finished film, but I'm not going to blindly defend that look.

If they're copying certain subplots of the original, Julia Hoffman tries to cure him, and he is able to be out in daylight, but it backfires and he gets super-old looking.

Some crew members on Twitter have said that's not representative of how he looks in the film. Cryptic, maybe bullshit, who knows.

I really want this movie to be good. I want Burton to get out of his rut and not just make two-hour hot topic commercials. My mom was a fan of the show back in the 70's and I used to watch re-runs of it with her when I was a kid, the fact that it had monsters in it cancelled out the fact I was watching a soap opera in my silly child-brain. That said, it's really hard not to see these set pics (which I know are not necessarily indicative of the actual film's look, etc, etc) and sigh.

Dammit, Burton...

Isn't that what CHARLIE AND THE CHOC FACTORY was?

And in regards to these pics? WTF.

Has this board really turned into anti-Burton? Alice in Wonderland wasn't good but Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride and Big Fish were all excellent. Dark Shadows was essentially a terrible show with an amazing character in Barnabas Collins. If it's in the same vein as Sweeney Todd or Sleepy Hollow, I don't see anything to complain about.

The fact that he looks like Pazuzu: The Pimpin' Years is a pretty valid thing to be complaining about.
