DjangNot gonna happen with Costner.

Fuck. I was looking forward to that. Someone call Ian McShane.

A shame.. Costner is so talented, and I was hoping this could have awakened others who have managed to forget this basic truth to that reality

Perhaps MAN OF STEEL will help with his exposure, but it's a much smaller role

Drat..

That really sucks.  I don't much about the character beyond the descriptions in this article, but could someone like, oh I don't know, Bryan Cranston fill that hole?

Mel Gibson

I posted it in the articles comment section but when I first read this news today the first person to pop into my head was William Sadler, so fantastic in Tales from the Crypt and whatever capacity Frank Darabont uses him in. Has the accent to boot.

William Sadler would be a fabulous choice.  The face alone seems like it would work here.

Third vote for Sadler. Beyond his work with Darabont, he was also awesome in Demon Knight and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.

Bridges is unavailable.....................and the same likely goes for Olyphant, Goggins, and Jim Beaver.  As for Madsen, that's who I figured QT would cast when I read the script, so he is certainly a possibility.  I'd love to see it go to someone like Kurt Russell.  Michael Biehn would also be an extremely fun choice (if the Expendables 2 rumors don't pan out).  I'm sure Jeff Fahey is free, if Quentin wants to cast one of Costner's Silverado co-stars.  Hell, with that film in mind, how about Kevin Kline?

Anyway, this is a MASSIVE bummer.  I was really looking forward to finally seeing Costner work with Quentin.  I guess the bright side is that they obviously want to work with one another and I'm sure they will make every effort to ensure that it does indeed happen at some point on down the road.  I don't think filming on The History Channel's The Hatfields and McCoys is gearing up until the spring..............................which means this likely involves a directorial effort of Costner's.  The aforementioned A Little War of Their Own?  Another western (which he has been teasing for a few years now)?  Whatever it is, it will probably be worth it.  Last time he opted out of a Tarantino project (Kill Bill, as the title role), we were given Open Range.  Whatever this is, let's hope it is just as awesome!  Hopefully this unnamed project will hit sometime next year because we won't get a glimpse of Kevin in Hatfields or Man of Steel until 2013.

Can't say I'm all that disappointed that Costner dropped out, he seemed like an odd choice for the role. Ace Woody is kind of a minor character, he only really has one important scene. And in a movie filled with villains I think I'd rather see a character actor like Sadler in the role. Or, if I had to pick a bigger star actor, Nick Nolte.

Love William Sadler.  Will Patton might also be a good choice.  But if I could put anybody there, I'd go with Don Johnson.  I wasn't a big fan of Machete, but he was really great in it.  Just an evil sonofabitch.  And his career could use the QT bump.

I like the Will Patton suggestion, but I'd also like to suggest KURT RUSSELL

You know who consistently turns up these days in supporting roles in interesting movies, quietly gets on with building a solid, respectable career these days and who I'd love to see work with Quentin?

...no one gives Woody any appreciation these days.

I figure Micheal Parks will show up in some capacity.

I'm a bit confused with the casting for this. Who exactly is 100% confirmed to have signed on?

Dunno if Quentin would want to direct Harrelson, given that Natural Born Killers is a sore spot for Tarantino.

Tarantino did work with Juliette Lewis in From Dusk Till Dawn, but (a) he didn't direct her and (b) he got a foot-fetish scene out of her, so he might've figured it was all good.

Some of the choices that others are naming are good in themselves, but the appeal of Costner was that it would have been a real departure for him and redefined his screen persona. A commenter on the original story mentioned Tom Hanks. That's more like it. That tubby bitch hasn't played a true bad guy since Uncle Ned.

Haha. I'd be floored in amazement if Hanks signed on. Would be brilliant!

Could definitely see him in the role. Good call.

Probably not really worth it to have Hanks. Ace is little more than a henchman.

I don't care how small the role is, and I'll repeat what Disciple up there said:

MEL GIBSON.

Especially if the character gets some hardcore payback. ESPECIALLY because of that. This would be baggage in used well.

Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, and Gerald McRaney.  Christoph Waltz has yet to "officially" sign on, as far as I know.  Kerry Washington is supposedly the lead candidate for Broomhilda, but no one has been signed for that role either.

Thanks S.D., it's been kind of unclear despite all the reports. LOVE the Gibson idea, doubt it would happen though.

Would it? This isn't like Robert Downey Jr. playing off his playboy persona in Iron Man. Gibson has made racist comments, which pretty much ruined his career. Why would he then want to play a despicable racist in this movie?

Because, and I'm just going by surface character write-ups from news articles, the film paints Ace knowingly as a despicable racist(like you said). Again, I haven't read the script(not even going to try to look for it), but I'm betting something really violent happens to Woody Ace. It would be a few degrees away from watching Hitler become a real life Glenn Fabry comic cover. If Gibson agrees to this, I would think, it would be one step in his sorta redemption--admitting the shit he's done is wrong. A sorta meta way of saying "I'm not going to be this guy anymore".

But I don't know. At the end of the day, I just think it would be really cool.

I can understand your point, but I just think it would be uncomfortable seeing him in such a role and knowing that he's made racist comments in real life. I think it would be distracting. And I'm not sure if it would work as a sort of meta apology for his past behavior either since the character isn't really over the top. He's despicable because he treats the slaves like animals and casually disposes of them when needed, but there's not a lot of theatrics to him. And since all of the white characters save one are racist to some extent, Ace isn't really one of the more vile characters in the movie, so I don't know how much the audience would want to see his comeuppance.

Off topic, but is your avatar of one of the characters from Breaking Bad? He looks familiar.
