The "Clownhouse" DVD situation...

Thread Starter
I know Clownhouse appeared in our DVD run-down for this week, but I thought I'd mention something about the title here since many of you are looking for it...

It ain't coming out.

MGM pulled the film from its release this year and it's now slated for sometime in '04 - and even that's sketchy, I think. I'll probably have a review for it in a few weeks since it's no longer due for quite a while.

MGM

The bitch you just HAVE to kiss
yes this was reported as a rumor on a DVD website a few weeks back but then it got debunked. now it's back. too bad, I really wanted this movie on DVD.

that early copy you've got is going to be worth a pretty penny, Ryan.
I got a review all set up for thi movie
"Clownhouse = Good film"
Can I write reviews for the corner now, PLEASE?
I was wondering why it's listing on Amazon was so fucked up, now I know. Damnit, I've never seen it and thought this would be my big chance.
I'm guessing this is solely due to the controversy surrounding Salva's child molestation charges stemming from his relationship with the child actor from the film.

Could there be any other rational reason not to release the film? Were the DVDs already produced and are now sitting in a warehouse somewhere? Damn, MGM is probably eating some cash (and crow perhaps) due to this fiasco.
Very few people know about Silva's psat when the first JC movie came out only one tv station talked about it. I didnt know about it till i saw it on the web.
I remember seeing CLOWNHOUSE years ago on good ol' VHS ... If memory serves, it was standard fare, nothing about it distinguished it from the pack ... except the fact that now the rape/molestation aspect as come out ...

Call me cynical, but considering the fact that the movie was very average, perhaps MGM is figuring a way to ( delicately ) milk the criminal aspect ... After all, that is what sets this film ( and basically any of Salva's films ) apart ... Don't ask me how or why, but if money is to be made, I believe the more this film gets in the headlines the better .... and one subtle way to do so is to push the release date back ...
I dug Clownhouse, it was a pretty good movie. Nothing groundbreaking, but a good movie none the less.

But, this pisses me off, since I ordered a bulk of movies on last Friday, and now Zombi2 and Clownhouse have been pushed back to whenever, and Brutes and Savages has been pushed back a few weeks.

By the way... Was the kid in Clownhouse that had the "incident" (I feel icky actually saying the word) with Salva the kid who played "Casey" in the movie?

Yes it was "Casey".
I agree with those who say this film was "average"... and Salva's um...'problems' are very evident upon viewing the film... no camera should ever linger on a 12 year old boy in his tighty whitey's for that long.

I managed to get a copy of the film (before I had seen it) from a video store that was going out of business about a year ago. I probably won't buy the DVD.
So did anyone else somehow manage to bag a Clownhouse DVD?

I notice there's at least one going on Ebay right now...
nobody then.
No, didn't get a DVD of it and didn't want to. Saw it years and years ago and thought it was average at best.

Now, as to why MGM have pulled the DVD ... my guess is that the kid who was raped by Salva and who is now a grown man and/or his family have either threatened to sue MGM or have actually sued them if they release the DVD. MGM, of course trying to keep the whole child molestation thing as quiet as possible on the opening weekened of Salva's new film, have either delayed the DVD release to a less risky date when legal proceedings and the resulting headlines can do less harm or were forced to drop the DVD release because of a court order until things are settled. Maybe they are settled already and the DVD will never get released. Strange, but I know that the kid's family was very active in trying to make sure Salva never gets to work again. I certainly wouldn't put it by them to try to stop the release of CLOWNHOUSE. Actually, I could kind of understand it.

How do you people sleep at night? I wish all prints of every salva movie were burned.
On a bed right across from my DVD collection which features Jeepers Creepers and will eventually feature Jeepers Creepers 2. Im so tired of people talking about What this guy did. I think for what he did he should be killed, hung by the balls, nail gun to the head but listen this is his work ok? I mean would you refuse a blood transfusion if it were from Charles Manson? No you wouldn't. This is called entertainment folks. And its not like if you burned every print of film he made and didnt go see jeepers 2 he would just go broke and die. No you dumb bastard hes doin fine. He's doing a job, a job that keep him in the public eye. With all this media attention I doubt he's molesting anyone anymore. And if he is kill the son of a bitch, hell sniper him now but dont condemn his movies cuz hes a sicko.
Nobody is rationalizing anything this man did, what he did was wrong. But if we were to ostracize this man for his crimes, the world would be without Jeepers Creepers and Clownhouse. He has done bad, now let him do good. We live in a society that is hell-bent on retribution rather than rehabilitation, why force a man to be a sponge when he has the ability to contribute. Be proactive rather than reactive, otherwise we’re all fucked.

On what grounds would they sue MGM?

Here we go again...

Look, MGM put it on hold because they didn't feel it was an ideal time to release it during Jeepers Creepers 2. They made a decision just like any other company would to delay something.

There was no other motive. The disc is slated to come out in '04.
we'll see...
All this talk and delay is publicity ... We are talking about it, anticipating it, blah blah ...

There is really no reason a movie that is, what, like 14 or 15 years old ( over-the-hill in SALVA YEARS ) should be delayed ...
I have it on tape.

I bet it's Sam Rockwell trying to cover up his acting in it.
I'm going ot reiterate what Ryan said, but I'm going to say it with a little more venom, so a few of you get it.

Quit being assholes, okay?

The DVD was delayed for reasons due to marketing. It has nothing to do with any controversy. It has nothing to do with any lawsuit. It was delayed due to a business decision. This is how the DVD world works, unfortunately.

I know some of you like to think you have a clue, sitting there in some little room in the middle of the country, but you don't. I work in the DVD world for a living, so trust me when I tell you this.
ooh, venomous! gonna have to drink a whole bottle of antidote there's so much venom!

Try being a nicer person. It'll help you in your daily life, making your little DVDs or whatever it is you do.

Don't speak ill of the Hellboy, he's a good dude who knows what the fuck he is talking about.

Why would having an opinion equate to being an asshole ??? ....

I think most posters point here eventually boils down to something financial, which is basically the same way of saying "business", isn't it Mr Hollywood ???

Christ, the little room you are in is no different than any of the little rooms of the other posters here ... This board is for people who love horror films to expess opinions, and it is my opinion that CLOWNHOUSE is a painfully average film to which the selling point is Salva and his 12 year old victim ... If anyone thinks I am wrong, or off base, I really don't care ...

Obviously, the DVD will be released at a time when MGM ( or whoever it is ) thinks it'll sell ... Like I said, if I were them, and my bottom line $$$, I'd figure a way to delicately milk it ...

So if you, there in you little room, disagree, well, I couldn't care less ...

A) You people are idiots for insulting The Hellboy. He's just saying, it's got nothing to do with the the pedophile charges, though that has to be dragged into this time and again.

B) What I'm reading into to what he's saying is that Clownhouse will either be released in a latter "horror batch" or twinned with Jeepers Creepers 2's DVD release, which should be sometime in December or January if MGM follows the usual gameplan.

C) The thing's printed and ready to go. They sent out review copies. A friend got one. I'll now tell him to put it on Ebay.
You can have an opinion all you want. Every idiot is entitled to one.
I'm just sick of the constant flood of anti-Salva sentiment. Yeah, we get it - you're disgusted by him. Everything is tainted by his situation. Enough already.
I'm not defending him or his situation - hell, I don't even think his movies are any good. But I'm sick of all the armchair quarterbacks out there chiming in with posts that have no basis in fact. It's apparent that that you don't even know the facts of the case, nor how the DVD industry works.
This "elmie" pr**k must have stayed up all night to zing me with the Blockbuster jab. Clever.

<It's Salva's fault for tainting all his movies with this talk. Don't blame us, blame the pedophile.>

<Then you shouldn't hang out on boards like these. This is where fans come to speculate and share opinions. We're regular schmucks. It should be assumed that anything we say is mostly speculation or conjecture. If we shouldn't be posting anything other than first-hand insider information, then these boards would be mighty small.>

It's apparent that that you don't even know the facts of the case, nor how the DVD industry works.
<So we deserve to be chastised for talking about it at all.>

<Ha-Ha! Agreed.>

Ah. It's so nice to have 'asshole' and 'prick' thrown into the conversation again. If someone can just call someone else a 'cunt' now, it will be like Angelus never left.

Actually, Hellboy is so wickedly far from Blockbuster it's ridiculous. I have to say, without him we probably wouldn't be getting some of the amazingly kick-ass discs we'll be seeing in the coming months.

The man's just stating an opinion as many do so often around here. The dude has built a pretty solid rep around these parts and knows what he's talking about, so cut him some slack if his temper bubbles up from time to time.
Actually, I think that's the first time I've ever cursed on these boards.
I'm just tired of the same old thing - a Victor Salva story comes up and we have to hear about his situation and the same people's views over and over and over...
You guys have said your piece, now let it go. Life's too short to be angry about situations we have no interest in.

Let's talk about the merits of "Underworld", or how much we're anticipating "Texas Chainsaw...", or how bad "House of the Dead" is.

You could , if you are interested , rent the Clownhouse DVD from Netflix http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?...vieid=60030283

Actually you can't rent it from Netflix. If you notice, the button says SAVE which means they have it listed but it's not available yet.

I actually found a copy of this in a video store withing a grocery store a couple of Halloweens ago. I only saw one copy and I bought it because I saw that they were selling for a lot on Ebay, and I sold it for about $200 on there. I wonder how much it's going on there now.

Anyhow, I;m kind of tired and haven;t read all the previous posts in this thread, so can comeone please tell me why it was recalled? If so, please quote my post (I don't care enough and am too lazy to actually read the posts).

The last post before mine was about the movie being available on Netflix so I guess that's why it was recalled.
