Even worse than what I posted above...

Verizon Eyeing Netflix Purchase

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this here (in this thread or others....I did a search?) ....anyway-

I still doing the rental plan for Netfilx as I didn't like the lack of new releases for streaming.....this is probably not new info and it's most likely due to the motion picture companies themselves but the "movie only" DVDs  that are shipped out really pisses me off.

For example, I just got around to watching  "Hanna" and there was bonus material listed in the menu, but when you try to access it, you get the "buy the DVD for the extra content" message on screen.

apologies if this 'rant' has already been brought up and run into the ground....

I think those are the same bare-bones discs that Redbox rents out.  But yeah, that's bullshit.  I can kinda understand it with Redbox, but with Netflix?  C'moooon...

Those rental discs are truly an insult to the consumers. Some even lack a chapter selection option, it's just terrible

They recently forced them on libraries too, so if a library wants a new release, a film they plan to have in their collection for years, they have to get that broken disc with 20 minutes of unskippable trailers

...All in service of getting us to switch to streaming only.

I was pissed that the Scott Pilgrim DVD I rented from Netflix had ZERO special features, when i knew damn well there were 15 Commentary tracks along on the "store" version.

That's ridiculous!  Even the DVD version of the movie had a good deal of special features on a single disc!

It's about turnaround.  With no due dates, you can keep a disc as long as you want, and if there are special features, you're likely to keep it longer and therefore out of circulation.

So this whole Verizon news has me thinking--the Qwikster spinoff was totally about separating Netflix's digital assets for a sale to a big telco looking to get into the content game.

That's what this whole thing was about, before it blew up in Reed's face.  I think Netflix saw the writing on the wall (still there, by the way, Netflix is likely dead in a couple of years), and Reed wants to get out while there's still time.  Makes perfect sense.  Netflix gets some muscle behind it and Verizon can stop being a dumb pipe.

I don't care about the special features on rental copies. If I like a movie enough to care about them, I'll probably buy the movie. Sometimes, it's a reason to push me over into buying a disc, like the Rise of the Apes, I expect. But I don't need a making of documentary on, say, The Help.

I would agree that for the majority of movies, I could give a damn about any extras. But there are exceptions....I will go with the movie I mentioned initially- "Hanna"

Now, it wasn't the greatest movie ever, but I enjoyed it....did I like it enough to buy it, no.

the extras that were shown in the menu as being on the DVD were as follows-

-Alternate Ending
-Deleted Scenes
-Anatomy of A Scene: The Escape From Camp G
-Feature Commentary with Director Joe Wright

...I would have enjoyed seeing the alternate ending, deleted scenes, and the breakdown of the escape...commentary, probably not...but as it turns out I can't see any of it.

For me, it's the fact that these extras are shown in the menu of the DVD but you aren't able to access them (if they are on it at all)...bit of bait & switch there ?

I'd rather they not show any of the optional material if I am not able to access it. IIRC, the most recent Transformers film has the movie on Disc 1 and all the extra crap on a 2nd (+3rd) disc?

Now, I'm pretty damn picky when it comes to buying DVDs.

I really haven't seen any films out in the last year or so that I liked so much that I have wanted to purchase it and even then I will usually only pick it up if it has a good deal of extra features ....Seven, Fight Club, Blade Runner mega set, the 2 disc Tropic Thunder DVD sets are a few that come to mind that I thought were worth it. I might pick up a TV series/season set on DVD if I really like it (30 Rock, Always Sunny....) but these days, IMO the pickings are pretty slim.

I agree a bit, but it's more a comment(ary) on my level of personal interest now. I saw Hanna in theaters, and I'd be interested in seeing some of that stuff, but at the end of the day, I just don't care enough to feel strongly about it at all.

What the hell is the deal with WB?  The only thing I've liked that they've sort of "innovated" is giving you a blu-ray and a dvd in the same package.  Everything else has been kind of annoying--that new ultraviolet thing, making it so you can't skip the previews/ads/etc. at the start of their DVDs, this change...I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
