404 Not Found.

What did it say?  (Aside from the assumption I'm going to make that they're quitting.)

kind of a punch to the gut.

I'm remarkably sad right now. Like, shaking a little sad.

Nah, can't be sad about this. What an amazing run they had.

I got File Not Found, but refreshed the page and now it's been updated with statements from the band members. One of the great American bands.

Try telling that to my soul.

I'm already bored with the "I thought they broke up already/I haven't liked them in years" posts. People who spend time typing about things they claim not to care about are kinda baffling. We loved them, grew up with them, they're gone, let us be sad. I don't post about how your grandma dying doesn't impact me. Go complain about Facebook some more. At least you have a stake in that.

Favorite band. Should have broken up years ago, like me and pizza. But also like me and pizza, hard to leave behind.

Saddened by this. But man, 31 years? I'm only 28! That's an insanely long time to be a (if I recall) relatively drama free band. Stipe had his moments, but they always seemed like a bunch of guys who were friends and loved jamming together. Out of Time remains one of my all time favorite albums (I was like...14 when it came out, and it holds a special place in my heart.) Kudos to them for the good and great music they put out over the (holy shit that's a lot of) years.

They released a pretty good new album earlier this year, and last year put out a stellar live set. So, yeah, I'd have said they were still in the biz.

Wonder if Pete will tour with Baseball Project?

I think he had to sit out the most recent tour with a back injury, but I saw him with them within the last couple of years, so I'd count on it happening again.

What Phil said. If you're small enough of a person to need to point out how much you don't care, just shut up.

Now I'm kicking myself for never seeing them live. It was a huge dream of mine, but I kept thinking I had the time. Even had the tickets twice, but both times something came up and I couldn't go.

My all-time favourite band and this is a pretty big blow. Glad we still got Collapse Into Now, it's a very good album.

I kind of checked out after Bill Berry left the band (who knew the drummer would have had that much of an impact?)  But its still a bummer when one of your favorite bands from your youth breaks up; I kind of assumed that they would be puttering around forever.

RIP. They stuck around too long after their peak, but to their credit they also stuck around long enough to get the ship back on course and bow out with a solid run of releases. Collapse is a decent swan song and the Live at the Olympia album is a delight. I've always stuck up for Up and Reveal as well - perhaps their two most underrated albums.

Haven't listened to them in years I'll be honest but for a while there they were a big musical part of my life. Saw them live back during the Monster days and it was one of the best live sets I've seen.

Helluva run. Helluva band,

I respected them more than actually LIKING them.  Nice to hear that they're apparently splitting up for the right reasons.

While I think every band should quit, rather than become irrelevant, it's still sad. But I still have their albums, I got to see them live, and I got to get drunk off of Wild Turkey and dance with strangers and propose to my wife while they played. I'm glad that when I tell my future kids what concert I was at when I proposed I won't have to be embarrassed by a string of awful albums and a fade into obscurity

With the year I have had, this was the last news I wanted to hear yesterday......

Already this morning waking up, I was conscious that the world was just a little bit worse off : (

Very sad to see them call it quits. But it is good that it has happened on their terms and was seemingly agreed upon by all the members of the band.

They were my favorite band in high school and most of college.  I saw them both times through my town on the Green tour (remember when albums were big enough that groups could circle the country twice in support of them?).  I hadn't kept up with them for a while but got a little nostalgic for them recently when I heard the Decemberists song that Buck played on and realized how much it sounded like old REM.

They had a great run, and seeing King of Birds live is still one of my all time live music highlights.
