NEW GIRL- Zooey deschanel's show - Page 2

I already pointed out my issues with Winston. But although they've gotten better in how they portray Jess in the last few eps, the first few were absolutely unwatchable for me. Jess was the uber-girl: she sings, watches Dirty Dancing ad naseum, eats ice cream in her PJs at night, talks during movies and spoils the ending... ugh. And then if those gender stereotypes wasn't enough, they had a board room full of women call Schmidt's manhood into question for wearing a pink tie, the show consistently makes fun on his hair conditioner, and Nick calls Schmidt a "sissy boy". I get that cliches happen. But this show relies way too heavily on them.

I do admit that they got the group dynamic right. The actors really make you feel like they have been friends forever. But at the same time, every episode is the same - Jess does something goofy, the guys are annoyed by it, and then they eventually succomb and the show ends with a group hug/song/chicken dance. I will admit that every time Nick makes his turtle face, I crack up.

If you watched Zooey on Conan this week you saw a clip of the sexy episode with Jess and her boyfriend. Sexy and Hilarious!

Nick's new haircut is awesome... I'd love it if he kept it like that for a couple of episodes.

As stupid as that youtube video was for cutting your own hair, I couldn't stop laughing.

Finally watched my first episode of this (it was the bell ringing one), and I laughed a few times.  But the thing I laughed at most was that it followed Diva's example to a tee--"Jess does something goofy, the guys are annoyed by it, and then they eventually succomb and the show ends with a group hug/song/chicken dance."  The goofy thing this time was teaching the kids in detention how to be bell ringers, and at the end, everyone shows up to show their support.

That Schmidt guy was annoying, but I did laugh when he grabbed his "cardy" to wear.  And do they always walk that "funny/somewhat serious" line?  I was laughing at the ridiculousness of the bell ringers, but then Nick(?) and Schmidt are increasingly getting angry with each other until Schmidt calls him a loser, and then everyone's sad...until the end with the group hug/song/chicken dance/bell ringing.

Gotta say, I think the "sex scene" with Jess doing her old-timey reporter voice and Justin Long doing his Jimmy Stewart impression was probably the funniest thing this show has done so far.  Favorite line goes to Schmidt, though - "What are you, a Bond villain?  You just told me your whole plan."

All in all, it's a cute show - not must see tv, and I'll probably never bother to dvr it, but as long as I'm home on Tuesday evenings I'll make it a point to tune in.

Nice to see Michaela Watkins getting work. SNL should have kept her on.

Also love Eva Amurri's glare.

That fucking killed me.  I've never been a huge Long fan, but that scene was incredible.

Oh, I just remembered what my biggest laugh was. I have NO idea why it cracked me up so much, but when Long said hello and Nick just dismissively goes "okay" off screen, I absolutely lost it.

Zooey giving Long a thumbs-up on the Stewart impression did it for me.

I'd buy Schmitt's cologne just because it's so bad I'd want to smell it again. Funny episode and a great way to handle Justin Long's short stint on the show.

I enjoyed it, but wanted more grumpy Nick, he's better that way.  Schmidt was somewhat exceptional tonight riding the line between clown and decent guy.  CeCe is still drop dead hooooooooot

Lizzy Caplan and Zooey Deschanel in the same episode? And you'll throw in Rachel Hariis as well?

Yes please!

That almost made forget about Jess's oddly absent friend CeCe.

I think not having CeCe at the party was intentional, as I guess the whole plot revolved around Schmitt trying to kiss Jess. Otherwise Schmitt and CeCe would be on the bangbus.

Lizzy Caplan makes everything better.  Hopefully she'll be sticking around for a few episodes.

Schmitt's friend could star in a live action movie of The Head.

Lizzy Caplan makes me swoon.

Seriously, how is she not the it girl for comedies? WTF Hollywood? Is she a Nazi or something?

I think there's been speculation about her sexuality in the past.  Gay, straight, it shouldn't make a lick of difference, but that's Hollywood for ya.  All I know is she's gorgeous and talented, and has been on my radar since Freaks and Geeks.  She deserves better, dammit!

Why would her sexuality matter?

Unless she's into poor, big, hairy Greek dudes in their thirties. In that case she should PM me.

It shouldn't, but in Hollywood, there's still a certain stigma attached to openly gay actors, especially when it comes to lead roles.  The money crunchers and older studio heads are concerned they won't be able to sell a film with a gay lead to middle America, even if they're playing a straight character.  Remember all the talk about how Quinto was harming his career when he (very casually) came out publicly?  It's the unfortunate reality, and it sucks.

On to less depressing stuff. They should rename the show to Schmidt (Schmitt whatever) And Friends.

"TWENTYNINE!"

"I don't know why I did that."

I believe the correct written version of that is TWENTYNOOOYYYYNE

I was laughing my ass off at the last bit with the damp towels.

Also loved seeing Nick crying in the bathroom.   Very funny episode.

A lot of good in this episode (Winston character stuff, more Lizzy Caplan) but the last bit with the towel was probably the best moment so far of the series.

I had to take a five-minute break after Schmidt sprinted across the room in order to casually join the lesbian conversation. An easy joke, but perfectly executed.

Interesting choice for the show to acknowledge that some people IRL have a problem with Zooey's "thing".

THE TOWEL WASHES ME!

The closing part was by far the funniest thing the show has ever done. And I have to hand it them. For all the "Zooey this, Zooey that" marketing they have done an excellent job of using all their actors. I suspect they will even find something for Winston to do.

Schmidt's pronunciation of chutney (chuh-TUH-nee) is obnoxiously awesome.

Loved this episode.  The complement/insult of Nick having the best game cracked me up and the end scene was gold.

Very funny stuff. I hope we see more Remy.

And by more I mean more guest spots. Not more as in without the underpants.

Thought I'd check back with the show and ended up catching the one with Nick's girlfriend calling Jess out for being such a weirdo. Glad the show is finally acknowledging that not everyone loves her schtick. The show still relies on the formulaic "Jess gets in trouble/annoys the guys, the group bands together in the end" thing, but it seemed much less forced this time around. Gotta agree with everyone that the towel tag was just aces, I think partially because Nick wasn't the grumpy asshole. "Who doesn't borrow other people's underwear?!"

I end up watching the show when my wife watches it (if I'm in the room), and yeah, this episode was pretty funny.  Watching young Nick pick up the $5 then get thrown into the bushes was awesome.  That's how you tell an origin story.

The cock-fight flashback was the only let down tonight.  Loved Jess and her big, box o' condoms.  Schmidt was once again the big winner with "Youths".

Fun episode for the obligatory Valentine's Day one.  I feel Winston is underutilized, the funniest bit he's had recently was when the guy last week mistakenly called him Coach.

I have the urge to read some Phantom T.

Another hilarious episode, and I'm glad to see Schmidt and CeCe a'banging.

Of course you do-- you're a HUMAN BEING.

CeCe is too marvelous. Not the best episode but it was cute at times.

Funny thing to me about that last scene was, I've been part of that call.  I was sort of flirting with this one girl in one of the dorms at my college, but I think she was putting me in the "friend zone", and one night after I had been hanging out there, the girl that lived across the hall (who I was also friends with) expressed her "desires" to me, and I ended up spending the night there.  That next morning, her phone rang, and it was the neighbor asking if she wanted to go get some coffee and breakfast, to which she responded, "Uhh, I didn't get much sleep last night, so I'm going to nap a bit longer."  So I waited until I heard the other girl leave her room, gave it a couple of minutes, then did the ol' walk of shame back to my dorm.  I don't think the other girl ever found out.

Men can't do the walk of shame. We do the strut of awesomeness.

What? That was the best part of the episode. Schmidt as usual was on fire. The show should really be about him (which I suppose it is as every ep is 50% Schmidt-centric).

At least they know they have a good thing going with him. I just hope they give him some breathing space. One man can only contain so much Tootsie Roll flavored goodness before he's squeezed dry.

Ready to have your mind blown? The guy who plays Schmidt also played sweet, harmless officer Leo on Veronica Mars.

That dude has a lot of moles.  I hope he sees a dermatologist on a regular basis.

Gonna agree with Diva.  They may have taken it a little too far, but the flash to it just killed me.

Schmitt can't get enough of Parkour can he?  Surprisingly, Winston had some very funny lines last night.

I thought for sure Schmidt was going to take a picture of CeCe's butt imprint in the sand. I would have.  Awesome episode that had me in tears during Nick's sad rap song.

A more subdued episode and treading some all too familiar territory.  Still, it was quite nice.

I hate to say it, but I've kind of totally lost interest in this show.  There doesn't seem to be any focus anymore.

Interesting.  I like it more than ever.  I am happy it's an ensemble show now.  I am anxious to see what the second season is going to be like once they get a full order and feel comfortable with their characters and setting.

I agree that the ensemble stuff works. The cast has a great rapport. I also like that the show continues to call Jess out for her annoyingness (e.g., Nick saying he didn't want Daffy Duck noises at his funeral). That said, as much as this show wants to be the "quirky", it is really quite bland in how formulaic it is.

Anymore? They never had any focus. It's the same schtick every ep. Jess does something annoying, Schmidt does something douchey, Nick makes a turtle face, and Winston is the dud in the background who gets a flashback to how awesome he used to be. Then they all come together for a group hug.

I thought the existential all-nighter on the beach was a nice change of pace and atmosphere. I'm only disappointed that Schmidt didn't pronounce the word "Hannukah" with some sort of pretentious inflection.
