Fall 2011, New shows catch-all - Page 3

Watched episode deux of Person of Interest last night. Loved the cold open. The rest of it bored the shit out of me.

Yeah, ok, second episode of Suburgatory was a lot better.  I no longer felt like I was watching a bunch of jokes I'd already seen other tv shows and movies make before.  And Alan Tudyk continues to be awesome.

I was shocked the first time I saw the ratings for 30 Rock and found out it wasn't a powerhouse. A show that good, I assumed it must be. And yet shit like Two and a Half Men is a huge hit. I try to tell myself it's because most of America can't handle a sitcom that is intelligent and edgy, but then I think about how Seinfeld was a monster in the 90s. What the fuck, NBC?

Also, am I the only one enjoying Up All Night? Because I feel like I am.

Up All Night has potential to be a great show but it's missing a few things.   The main thing is that the lead characters aren't the most likeable.   Likeable might not be the right word.   Not being able to connect with Applegate and Arnett might be.    In alot of ways, it reminds me of the first season of Parks and Recreation where you can see a good show underneath the surface and it just takes time to work all the kinks out.   Case in point?   Winning the A Team Van with a "birthing blanket" was hilarious.   It's an "almost there" show for me.

One show I can't get into is "New Girl".    It's missing just the right tone or mix of actors to make it work.   I think if Wayans' "coach" character stayed on, there would be that balance but instead we have Manic Pixie Girl and her Three Beta Male friends.   I guess your mileage may vary on how much of a crush you have on Zoe.

Worst sitcom has to be "Suburgatory".  Maybe the second episode gets better but it's so elitist it's not even funny.   It feels like the creators have never been out of New York City and got their information about the 'Burbs from movies and TV.   If you're going to be mean, at least bring some scathing insight to the table.  What an endurance test that show was.

See, I don't get that vibe at all, especially with a former writer for Parks and Rec running the show (Emily Kapnek). I think they're trying to do some world-building here, and that'll take some time, just like Pawnee took time to feel a fun, semi-real location. As I said in a previous post, they're not exactly making fun of typical middle-class suburbia here. If anything, the "elites" here are all of the class-conscious neighbors.

Kapnek said the town is a healthy split between a realistic, contemporary atmosphere and a “stylized, evergreen suburbia.” But Kapnek’s biggest inspiration for the show was reality: her own experience moving from an urban environment with a single parent into a suburb “where families didn’t look like ours and we didn’t’ have as much as they did … there was an economic divide, there were expensive bat mitzvahs … [the difference was] all of the fortune the kids had, and the families were incredibly intact.”

I have a hard time taking 'elitist' criticism seriously.  It's like one of those trigger words where I just kind of tune out.  "I can't believe that show thinks it's so much better than me!"

I'm sure the goals of the show aren't to be East Coast elitists looking down on Red State America but that's how it comes across.   There's nothing really wrong with that kind of show but if you're going to go there, you need to bring something to the table that's different or more insightful.   I just feel like the show is just rehashing the same old stereotypes and the biggest insight is: "Aren't Suburbanites WEIRD??"   And this is coming from someone who hates Applebees going, mainstream suburbia.    I should be loving this show.

Sometimes it applies.  I mean, I get it, they moved from the city and everything's exaggerated to show their discomfort and inability to relate to these people; as a satire, it works, but the "us vs. them" was so strongly divided that it kinda comes across as insulting.  Just a little more effort not to portray everyone in the suburbs as so homogeneously idiotic would have gone a long way.  They made a lot of progress in the second episode, but I have a feeling that pilot probably turned a lot of people off.

Unlikely, viewership only dropped 9% from the pilot, which is a strong retention.

It's weird that I can't seem to find the pilot anywhere online to watch legally. I checked ABC's website, Amazon, Vudu, and even Hulu.  Kind of strange.

dontEATnachos, If you mean the show...Suburgatory, go to the official ABC site, click on shows, and then click on the Suburgatory bubble, and the show can then be seen.  Or you can type beta.abc.go.com/shows/suburgatory.

D'oh.  Oh, well, good for them.  Honestly, while I still hold the "elitist" criticism, it's secondary to the fact that I just didn't find the pilot that funny due to the recycled nature of so many of the jokes.  Again, something that was much better in the second episode.

Ok, maybe I'm just useless or something but anytime I try to play the Suburgatory episodes absolutely nothing happens.  I've tried 3 different browsers updated flash in IE and Firefox and still nothing.  Ah well.  Guess I'm not going to watch that.

Free Agents is gone.

What makes you think they moved to Red State America? Aren't they somewhere in the suburbs of New York? If I missed it, I apologize.

"American Horror Story" premier was enough to buy at least three more eps from me (five from my wife who  says Dylan McDermott's ass gave a totally believable performance.  She is, however, a freak).  I like what they're trying, but not sure if they can find a way to nail it down.  It feels like we're getting bits from all these famous movies/stories but without anything really to hang them on.

Granted, it was only the pilot and things were being set up.  I'm grooving on Jessica Lange, though.  Any woman who can talk about her hopes and dreams coming to California and follow that "And then came the mongoloid..." when talking about her disabled daughter is worth a bit of my attention.  Plus, you hardly *ever* hear of a show where Connie Britton screams "PUSSY" and isn't talking about a weak person.

I'm hanging for a few.

I sure didn't see this particular criticism coming. At all. I'm definitely watching. Mostly for Levy. That girl has the capability of going places. And the second episode was even better.

Edit: And if this...

"If you could have dinner with any one person, living or dead, who would you choose?"

"Scarlett Johansson. Dead"

...didn't make you laugh, you're weird. Idiot object of desire was great. I hope they won't give this up right away.

Suburgatory just got a full season order, so I'm happy.

After only four episodes, Charlie's angels have went back to heaven.

It is a shame that Charlie's Angels was cancelled.  Now there are...No good new Live action series this fall.  After Seeing...X-Men Anime at New York Comic Con, I can report there is more action in that than in Wolverine.  The pilot episode for X-Men Anime is...X-Cellent as X-Pected!

Apparently...Charlie's Angels is on tonight!  I wonder how many more episodes will be shown?  Maybe ABC, doesn't have another series ready to replace the...Best new show of the 2011-12 season!

They will probably release the remaining episodes on DVD, iTunes, or during summer off hours at some point I am sure, if they do not all go to air

Princess Kate, I am already happy to see at least...One more episode.

I'm really digging "Person of Interest". It is the only decent new network show, even if the last episode did not live up to the previous three. I hope tomorrow's episode is better.

Anyone know what happened to 'Awake'?

According to Alan Sepinwall's Twitter feed, the show has been delayed as the network works on the show's overly dark tone.

EDIT: It appears that the show also delayed production: http://www.deadline.com/2011/10/nbcs-midseason-drama-awake-stops-production-to-work-on-scripts/

So anyone want to talk about the elephant in the room regarding Suburgatory?  Namely how Jane Levy and Jeremy Sisto look more like a couple than father/daughter?  The credits pretty much throw it right out there, what with how they look posing next to each other.  And the way the ongoing plot focused on Tess trying to keep her dad from dating really added a bit of a creepy subtext to things.  The real-life math is pretty sketchy -- he's 15 years older than her -- but there's nothing in the show to indicate he had a child that young.

I don't know, maybe it's because Sisto looks and acts pretty young.  But every time I watch this, my wife calls it the "father-daughter dating show".  And I know the Onion and Alan Sepinwall have made mention of it as well.  I don't think it was intentional, but it's there, and the creators are going to have to deal with it.

I just looked at a youtube trailer for the show (never heard of it until your post), and I don't know if I would've thought that unless I'd read your post.  Seems more like something I would've felt if I actually watched the show for a while.

But since I did read your post first... yes, I can see it.

Am I the only one enjoying Up All Night?  It isn't transcendent TV or anything, but I think it is written pretty well, the cast is great and has wonderful chemistry.

Nah, I'm with you. Up All Night's pretty good.

It's okay.  Unfortunately as a gigantic Will Arnett fan I should like it a lot more than that.  Heck, I actually watched Running Wilde and it was horrible.  I keep watching Up All Night but so far it's not left much of an impression.

wd40, Lightning Slim, A-Pathetic, Up All Night?  Is that the...USA Network series starring...Rhonda Shear, presenting gloriously over the top...Grade Z Films, like H.O.T.S.?  I do watch...Missing!  Finally an...action series!  Basically Ashley Judd is...Miss Taken, mimicing the Liam Neeson Classic, albeit with a...Gender Switch, of the Hero Mom, seeking to rescue her Son!
