Hi all, new member of the forum, but have been loving the site for some time now.  I write a blog primarily focusing on horror, new releases and generally depressing films.  Please give it a look, thanks!

Two more interesting reads.  Though I disagree with you about Argento (at least in terms of his output before the late 90s), I am very intrigued by the Refn article.  I really, really need to delve into that man's work soon.  I was worried a lot about using Drive as my gateway film into his works and your article has gone a long way towards alleviating those fears.  I can't wait to see Drive in the next week or so and, barring disliking it (doesn't seem likely, from what I've read), I will definitely be exploring his earlier works shortly thereafter.

Keep 'em comin'!

Thanks again for reading and for commenting.  I'll be interested in hearing what you think about Refn's stuff in general and Drive in particular once you give it a look!

I joined the Profondo Cinema guys for a lengthy discussion concerning Jim VanBebber, Day of the Dead and the Matrix sequels!  Check it out!

Profondo Cinema is a great podcast with a focus on Romero, cheesy action films and home theater tech geekery.  They are the best in the business!

Ouch!  While I disagree with quite a lot of what you said, I'm glad that you took the time to explain why you feel that way.  Most never bother to.

I realize most won't agree with my opinion on this one.  I didn't write the piece to bait or infuriate anyone.  I might have got carried away with the hyperbole here and there, but only in the interest of making it more entertaining to read, my assessment remains the same regardless.  I appreciate the readership and suspect we share a similar outlook on how to respectfully voice one's opinions on the net!  Thanks again!

No problem!  Can't wait to read the next one!

I too disagree with at least 1/3 of Your alien piece, but respect the hell out of you for not just saying, 'it sucks'. I need to perform a 'reassessment piece' on the original alien, as I've only seen it once or twice, very young and I don't really know where I stand with it now. The sequel s the gold for me here, which I find amazing for a plethora of reasons (although I do not disagree with all of your criticisms, not the least of which is that other than a small share of his output, Ridley does NOTHING for me) I'll save for a blog of my own some time (admittedly many of those reasons may end up cycling back to 'Bill Paxton's awesome'). Alien 3 is just fucking awful, or at least was the one time I saw it, cresting on a wave of adrenaline from a Aliens re-watch and just finding Fincher's (who I love) to fall completely flat.

I wonder, did you purposely leave 4 off your stink-list? I know a lot of fans of the other movies HATE #4 but I think it is 2nd strongest and the closest to 'Horror' that the franchise came. I think it is the truest to Giger's own surrealistic horror aesthetic and just plain phantasmagorical at times. Plus Brad Dourif, you know - awesome!

Apologies, I just realized Alien 4 is subtitled Resurrection and you answered my question. I was thinking you were speaking of the 2nd AVP.

Thanks for reading and for the kind words!  Resurrection has a flat out amazing cast.  Hedaya, Dourif, Wincott, Perlman, J.E. Freeman, Leland Orser, Raymond Cruz, it's a veritable buffett of quirky, under utilized actors.  Plus, you get to see them interact!  I love it!

I love all the practical Alien FX in Resurrection and agree they jibe the most with the feel of Giger's design.

I thought most everyone agreed it was pretty spectacular.  Looking at my favorites of the year though, it's clear I'm a bit out of the loop.  Both times I saw it in the theater, the packed audience seemed to be getting a lot out of the experience!  Thanks again for reading!

Definitely.  He's one of those rare, brilliant film makers where your favorite film of theirs is constantly rotating,  Any entry a possibility on any given day, after a revisit.  I'm expecting a big backlash toward The Dark Knight Rises, a sort of continuation of the Inception hatred I still don't understand.  I guess you either die a Stanley Kubrick, or live long enough to see yourself become the Joel Schumaker, at least in the eyes of the internet lol.

My current Nolan rankings...

1. The Dark Knight

2. Inception

3. The Prestige

4. Memento

5. Batman Begins

6. Insomnia

7. Following

Your Nolan pieces are absolutely fantastic.  I must say, it is nice to find someone who loves The Prestige as much as I do.  Too often when Nolan is discussed, it (along with Following) remains forgotten.  Memento, Inception, and the Bat films always come up.  Insomnia does too, though unfortunately in a negative regard most times.  I'm also glad to see praise of Hugh Jackman within.  Barring a few projects here and there, he hasn't made many opportunities to shine like he does here.  I have a feeling that will soon begin to change.  With Wolverine still going strong and Real Steel providing him another hit (as well as a potential second franchise), he seems to finally be getting the attention and projects he deserves.  I'm really looking forward to Les Miserable this year, along with other potential musicals (Houdini, Carousel, etc.) and other dramatic roles he can acquire himself in the coming years (hopefully that Spielberg adaptation of A Steady Rain, with he and Daniel Craig, will get made).  Hugh seems to have finally found solid footing in the industry and I suspect he will utilize that to start putting together excellent projects for himself between franchise-fare.  I sincerely hope that both he and Guy Pearce end up working with Nolan multiple more times over the course of their careers.  With Nolan's penchant for keeping a stable of actors around, I have no doubt that they will reunite at some point.........................especially since both were apparently offered the role of Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight.

Closing thoughts?  I would love to read your opinion on Following at some point and am obviously looking forward to your inevitable piece on The Dark Knight Rises when the time comes.  My excitement for the release of that film is only matched by my excitement to see where Nolan takes his career post-Batman.  All that aside, I would LOVE to see you do a two or three part piece like this on Fincher sometime soon..........though you'll probably want to wait for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to hit home video before doing it.  I might pop back in here with a few more thoughts as they come to me.  Regardless, I loved the hell out of these and I'm glad I waited until now to read them.  You just made my night.

BTW, that Aaron "think about the future" Eckhart bit is priceless!  We have a habit of doing bits like that for certain actors over in the B Movie Thread and I might just add yours to the list if I can remember it.  That's too good a line to allow it to disappear.  Fear not, credit will be given!

You sir, have made my morning!  It's quite invigorating to wake up and read such high praise!  I absolutely need to see Following and am sure I will give it a watch soon.  Hopefully it's on Netflix streaming.  I have this collector mentality problem where I need to own all of my favorite film makers and films, but have long since abandoned DVD.  Alas, Following hasn't received a bluray (I suppose I made an exception for Barton Fink lol) release, but I shouldn't let that stop me from watching it.  Jackman can be incredible given the right role and I'm extremely excited for Les Miserables, he'll make a perfect Valjean.  Real Steel wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but my 10 year old son LOVED it and Jackman is so damn good in it, the IMAX theater got a little dusty for me at the end:)

I am excited to see where Nolan goes after bats as well, we're so lucky too have a director that talented who is so young and turns them out so quickly.  Look at the situation we're in with the Coen brothers and David Fincher!  In any case, I should tackle Fincher, but there's that blu issue on The Game and Panic Room, two films I haven't revisited since the theater.  Feel free to use my line with credit!  I love passing along good ones with acknowledging the source as well.

Thanks so much again for reading and having such nice things to say, cheers!

While I've never really been on board with the Resident Evil film franchise, the Underworld movies have always been a guilty pleasure for me.  What can I say?  I'm a sucker for vampire that don't sparkle, werewolves that didn't walk out of a Village People video, and Brit character actors chewing scenery in projects that are technically "beneath" them.  Dumb fun indeed!

Yeah, I was certain I would hate it based on the premise alone, but the huge word of mouth compelled me.  I'm glad I gave it a chance.  I woke up this morning and it is still really kicking around my head.
