Saturday Night Live 2011-12 (Season 37)

Hey, it kicks off tomorrow with Alec Baldwin and Radiohead. Not bad. Here's hoping for a good season.

Nice to see they're starting out the season with their best host.

With the 2012 election cycle kicking into high gear, SNL could be great this year if they can capitalize on it. All it would take is someone doing for Rick Perry what Tina Fey did with Sarah Palin.

And how about giving Bill Hader more to do this year? I'd rather watch an entire episode of his alien sportscaster then Kristin Wiig rehash one of her lamely repetitive "characters" for the umpteenth time.

Pretty funny so far tonight.

I haven't laughed that hard at an SNL political sketch in who knows how long.

And it was cool to see Steve Martin and Seth Rogen.

Nobody tops The Boss.

Is it just me or was that all around solid?

Yup, that was the completely strong episode in at least 10 years.

Somebody must have messed up.

Agreed. Alec Baldwin was in top form. His Tony Bennett impression was gold. I'd say the only sketch that didn't work for me at all was the Top Gun screen tests.

Anyone else surprised there was no digital short?

He was sure grinding that teleprompter like a fresh cup of coffee, there, though.

Not one of their worst premieres, but nowhere near their best, either. That said, I still can't get Sudeikis's "...Or was I *PUSHED*???" out of my head. Awesome.

"Tell my son, a cripple is not a full human being."

I thought it was pretty meh outside of Tony Bennett, the soldier sketch and the Top Gun auditions.

The "Top Gun Auditions" sketch worked because of Hader's out-of-leftfield Alda impression. Always kills me.

I have to admit I keep chuckling at "only ten more minutes" and "just 45 minutes remaining" in the "Who's On Top?" sketch.

Samberg just did the emmys so they were probably preparing for that and Baldwin isn't the best host for a digital short.

"Or was I pushed" saved a bad sketch.

Better episode than they had in a long while.

For the first time in years I actually plan on watching SNL every week.

Not to mention Baldwins pretty good Pacino.

I thought McCarthy did a great job.

I thought it stunk. McCarthy was just a heavier version of Kristen Wiig and her cavalcade of crazy voiced women.

The writing was uniformly terrible but, yeah, it was great fun seeing McCarthy go completely for broke with the physical comedy.

I thought last night was a step back into mediocrity. McCarthy was game, but the writing was again the culprit. The salad dressing sketch was the only thing memorable, and that was more of a cheap shock (you had to laugh as McCarthy was going all out, gorging on the dressing) than anything approaching layered comedy. Keenan's bit on Update as Tyler Perry was the epitome of lazy.

"Lil' Poundcake" was aces. Everything else was dreck.

Why the FUCK isn't Bill Hader utilized more?

The Office Flirtation sketch actually had a beginning, middle, and end. And a great improv when Sudeikis punched that balloon out of the shot.

Love Hader's groove as Man Who Punches Internet Trolls.

Has this guy EVER done a single accurate impersonation? They have him playing every other black guy in the world, and it's like he doesn't even bother to study him at all. It's especially glaring knowing Jay Pharoah is kind of a brilliant impersonator. Really thought his Denzel was going to become a recurring character.

I laughed almost every time McCarthy fell down the stairs.

Funny show tonight. The Hugh Jackman Show sketch had me rolling at Hader's Eastwood. And then Jackman himself showed up, and I was laughing like a giddy idiot. The "Fox and Friends" sketch was great, too.

Wiig's really channeling the ghost of Ann Magnuson right now on Weekend Update. (The fuck's up with the 1987-era shoulder pads?)

EDIT: Stefon!!

The cool thing about the Jackman cameo is the audience couldn't tell is was Hugh right away. Frankly, neither did I.

I honestly thought it was Hamm for a second.

The Wiig segment on weekend update was brutal.  Thankfully Stefon and Derek freaking Zoolander showed up to save it.

Stacking rust at a dirt factory?

I heard since Stiller was on he might get Eddie Murphy to do a cameo since they are in the same movie.  Should have know he wouldn't since he hasn't done anything cool in decades.  Bad blood or not-it's 20 years.  let it go.

I spotted Jackman from the PIP box and flipped over.  FFW is the way to watch SNL.  Crowd finally realizing itwas him was cool.

One-joke premise, but I enjoyed every one of the Lincoln Financial spots, mainly because I hate that ad.

"Nina!  Pinta!  And Scuzzy Beth!"

Killam's Pitt is pretty great. He's easily the MVP of the new guys.

I read somewhere that Killam started out as a child-performer on Nickelodeon, twelve or fifteen years back.

From Nick and Disney to SNL and knocking up Cobie Smulders -- the hat's off to you, sir.

Loved Hadars Eastwood. And Stefon was great as always...however Zoolander sucked back then...still sucks now.

Yeah, I don't understand the Zoolander thing either; it was only mildly funny ten years ago but, for some reason, people act like the character is a comedy icon.

And Foster the People make Vampire Weekend look like Mastodon.  I bet that even Coldplay thinks that they are a bunch of pussies.

Foster the People brought Kenny G out to jam with them. That's the only argument you will ever need for anyone who disagrees with the above.

Hader is killing it tonight. Funny show so far.

Pretty damn good show last night. The detective sketch with the Seinfeld apartment at the end just killed me. I don't know if it was actually that funny or if I was just dead tired after being up 24 hours straight and anything could make me laugh. The dolphin sketch was also hilarious for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. And Hader killed as Perry on Update. I hit FF during Wiggs' segment as usual.

Can anyone confirm/deny these sketches were actually funny or was I just hallucinating from insomnia?

"Fuuuunnnkkkkyyyyy boooooooyy!"

I didn't personally care for the dolphin sketch, but the Seinfeld Apartment, Greek Gods, and Kardashian Divorce segments were all pretty solid.  Kind of surreal seeing Charlie do something so mainstream.

Seinfeld apartment was good. So was the Greek gods. The rest...pretty crappy.

Wigg doesn't need your pity but the Judy Grimes sketch was great.

Slappy pappy wehn weeeeeehn?!

Uh, yeah ... the Devil bit on Weekend Update.  Too soon.

Devil bit was the bright spot.

Recycled skits are the worst.  Lazy writers, lazy show.

Liked the monologue, the cold open and the crying sketch near the end. Otherwise a pretty worthless episode. Even the usually reliable Digital short was garbage.

I got to cop that "Let's Make Technology Hump" made me laugh pretty hard.

I hope the Devil isn't retiring for real. And I love that he assumed the scandal was about recruiting.

I want Stone to do whole movie in the voice of the Bridal Shower character.

Yeah, she was hilarious in that sketch.

When did we decide as a country that we care about The Muppets again?  I don't want them to host the Oscars and I don't want to see them on SNL.

I don't know about you, but we never stopped caring about the Muppets. Kermit upstaging Seth during "Really?!" was awesome.
