Saturday Night Live 2011-12 (Season 37) - Page 2

God damn, Jay Pharoah's Denzel Washington is my favorite SNL impersonation in years.

Muppets would have been a better host than Segal.

But half of them don't even wear pants!

On deck: Buscemi hosts Dec 3, with Katy Perry hosting the 10th

I thought the Segel episode was pretty funny. Loved the "Me Time Mattress" commercial and the Digital Short.

I agree that the degree some adults love the Muppets can be a bit disconcerting, and their appearence with DeNiro a few seasons ago was cringe inducing, but they were great on the show the other night. (Also The Muppets did get their start on SNL, but that early version sucked and they were canned. It wasn't untill "The Muppet Show" that they found their groove)

I have Segel episode recorded, but I haven't watched it yet. I heard the Andre the Giant sketch Jason does is pretty great.

Am I the only one that really doesn't see why the Kissing Family is considered funny...I really hope not.

Loved the digital short. The Muppets were good and so were the Regis replacement tryouts. But the rest was pretty forgettable.

The Kissing Family is all about the gross out. And I find it pretty funny. Loved when Paul Rudd showed back up.

The Hidden Valley Ranch sketch trumps the lawnmower scene in Dead Alive as the sickest thing ever.

Meh episode overall...kinda loved the digital short though.

I loved Armisen playing the Queen of England as a closet Sid Vicious.

Except they've done this sketch numerous times already and it's pretty much the same every single time.

I was pretty taken by the final sketch of the night.  Mostly because it wasn't a talk show/news show parody, but a sketch that actually told a story.

Ummm....the Muppets did not get their start on SNL. Jim Henson coined the term in the fifties when he was doing things such as Rowlf The Dog on the Jimmy Dean Show.  Then there was the beginning of Sesame Street, which was back in 1969.

Am I crazy or did Robyn perform the same song twice?

Apparently she's a big deal in Europe, but her act seemed really amateurish to me.

It was new to me! :)

I think I've officially forgiven Jimmy Fallen for his past transgressions. I was a sucker for the nostalgia of this show.

Ya, lot's of energy and fun guests. My favorite may have been Will Arnett awkwardly skating around in the background at the end.

Tracy Morgan looked legitimately angry to be there.

Isn't that the whole gag, though?  Chris Kattan did look rather drunk, however, considering he almost took a spill when bowing at the end.

I'm pretty sure he looked angry to be there in the original skit.

Just caught up with the Katy Perry episode. Why didn't anyone tell me there was a digital short where Matt Damon played a junkie and Val Kilmer played a mad scientist?

Abby Elliot has a cute little "PG" layout in the current issue of Maxim. The one with J-Wow on the cover.

What the fucking fuck is Karmin?  They sound like all of those shitty pop groups from the late 80s/early 90s that were trying (and failing) to appropriate hip hop into their shitty pop songs.

I could chalk my distaste for them to my age but I honestly couldn't imagine anyone taking that garbage seriously.

Nic Cage showing up was hilarious.

Per that "guide":

Why, again, are these people on Saturday Night Live?
Because the internet likes them, and the internet makes all the decisions from now on. Sorry.

I actually found their first song kind of catchy, but the singer's shtick got kinda old pretty fast.

Agreed. It takes a lot to come on and do a skit about making fun of your acting persona...not that there's any denying it at this point.

"All dialogue must be either whispered or screamed."

Points also to Elliot's Zooey, and Zooey's Mary-Kate. "I'm a billionaire."

Howard Stern plays an audio clip of Tracy narrating his audiobook where he rambles into a long, unscripted, angry rant about how much he hates Chris Kattan and Cherri Otteri, mixed in maudlin praise for Tina Fey for "believing in" him.  Tracy will begrudgingly do nice gestures for Tina Fey and Lorne - it's actually shocking how much he really is like the character on 30 Rock (sons almost older than him, house arrest, etc.) and, even if you're not a fan, any of his long form interviews with Stern are fascinating, since they tell "the real story".

The past two weeks have been a haul to get through. I find myself hitting the fast foreward button on the DVR more often than not. Did love the Eastwood commercials though.

Gotta say, I loved "Bein' Quirky."   Killam's Michael Cera is a little too high-pitched but he nailed the mannerisms.

Can we now offically retire "Le Jeunes au Paris?"   Seems like there's nowhere left to go on that.

I'll keep tuning in for "le Jeunes au Paris" as long as Nasim keeps flashing those legs. It's the only time she gets to play anything besides a child or an old lady.

Seth Meyers is one of the best Weekend Update guys in SNL history.

Yes! This was definitely an in joke for people who remember The Queen Haters from SCTV. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njiUFtrFky8

A hundred times this.  It's not even one of those that started funny and wore out it's welcome for me.  It was just never funny.

I have to say, I'm surprised/glad that there hasn't been any Steffon in a while.  I like Steffon, but that ran the risk of getting old fast.  And honestly, I prefer Drunk Uncle.

You know who I miss? Greg the Alien:

Greg is not an alien.

How about they introduce Drunk Uncle to Stefon? I bet they have more in common than meets the eye.

That Jeremy Lin opening was spot on and, sadly, 100% necessary. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Between the asinine Asian stereotype jokes about Lin and the "Dudes only!" contraception hearings in Congress this week, I swear that I must have bumped my head and woke up in 1950.

And goddman, Sleigh Bells!  What the fuck has been up with the musical guests this season?  Its like they are intentionally finding the worst acts out there and then trashing them during the next week's episode.

LiLo hosting rolleyes.gif

They couldn't get anyone else?  What's Goodman doing?

A Maya Angelou prank show is pretty damn funny.

"No, brother West.  It was, an act...of whimsy."

Maya Angelou prank show and the Lin opening were great, and I had gotten sick of Bronx Beat was getting old until it was saved by such a filthy turn with Samberg and JT, but 2.5 good sketches is more than I expect on the occasions I tune in to SNL these days, so good show I suppose.  I always thought Poehler suffered by comparison to Tina Fey on update, but in comparison to the Seth Meyer solo show she seems like an icon.

Don't know what the hell was going on with the Super Showcase skit, and they might as well just play extra commercials rather than doing What's Up With That; it would make them more money and would have a better chance at getting an actual laugh out of me.

I'm a sucker for What's Up With That, but this was the first time it felt a little tired to me. Plus, the taint of Bill O'Reilly definitely downgrades things.

A surprisingly decent ep. The "Maya Angelou prank show" was gold, as was the "Would You Still Vote For Obama". I was really hoping for a PTA cameo.

Yep, O'Reilly is nothing but a disingenuous hate-monger & it was unsettling & disappointing to see him be treated to any form of respect by SNL.

Agree on all points, AD. The Maya Angelou Prank Show was about the most inspired skit they've had in a while. Also, great to see Poehler back. The Bronx Beat sketch is one of those skits you never really cared for at the time but unexpectedly realized you missed when it was brought back.

I thought I was maybe the one person left in the country who wasn't sick of 'What Up With That?', but I am now officially sick of it.  I did enjoy JT's Bon Iver, though.

I call Tina Fey showing up tonight to support Lohan.
