Chewers' 100 Scariest Films of the 80's - Page 4

Some I forgot about:

Basketcase

Nightmare in a Damaged Brain (this one will make you feel dirty and has copious amounts of gore)

The Church (unofficial Demons sequel that's atmospheric and creepy)

Demons 2 (if only for this scene:)

Thread Starter

Speaking of Henenlotter, Brain Damage.

Hennenlotter's Brain Damage also deserves to be on this list.  It is just as good, if not better, than Basket Case................and both are more than worthy additions.

I wasn't joking when I said this list could easily hit 200 if we let it.

I'm good with 200 of the 80's and moving directly to the aughts.   The eventual 90's list is going to be a slog.   I can't think of many noteworthy horror films from that decade (maybe Jacob's Ladder?).

Candyman, Chronos, Perfect Blue, Lord of Illusions, Braindead, Ring.

Oh, and Ghostwatch. Definitely Ghostwatch.

I suppose if you insist on cramming in Scream and Blair Witch that gives you ten, and then you can forget the decade.

EXORCIST III, RAVENOUS, AUDITION, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, FUNNY GAMES, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, SE7VEN, CURE, etc. And this is just obvious stuff. I'm sure we chewers are creative enough to come up with 100, and the possible challenge is just part of the fun.

Exactly.  I'm actually looking forward to the 90's list.

I thought about adding Mr. Boogedy to this list. Anyone remember that? It was a TV movie from 1986 (Disney, I believe) with John Astin and Kristy Swanson in it.

Can't wait either.   Who wants to get the ball rolling?   I already did the 90's action list so it's someone else's turn.

I was such an asshole as a kid: Mr. Boogedy terrified my kid sister (She called him Melted Potato Head).  Then I figured out the basement vert in our house connected to her bedroom.  So after she went to bed I'm go "Boogedy Boogedy boo!" into the vent every night until she cried.  My parents figured things out after about a week and I got grounded big time.

Arghh! I just remembered one! This was a GLARING omission:

I always thought that one was early 90's for some reason. I also spaced on this creepy-ass flick:

135. Warlock (1989)

DTV at it's finest.   Julian Sands just kills in this role.  Even the sequels were alright.

136. Christine (1983)

John Carpenter. Stephen King. An evil 1958 Plymouth Fury. Yeah, it belongs on this list.

I can't believe I forgot that one!!!

Yeah, I had to double check the list before I posted that. I was also surprised it didn't make the top 100. I don't know about 200, but 150 seems very likely.

Keepin' the dream alive, Bob:

137.

220px-Extremitiesposter.jpg

dir. Robert M. Young, 1986

It's hard to believe but for a brief moment in the mid-1980s, Farrah Fawcett proved to be one of the most pivotal & electric dramatic actresses alive. First, with her portrayal as a battered wife in the TV movie The Burning Bed & then again here in the film Extremities. This is the disturbing story of a woman who suffers a barrage of mental and physical assaults by a home invader & then turns the tide on him, subjecting him to prolonged caged torture. While not an entirely successful film, it's still impressively gritty, ugly, & all around terrifying.

Awesome choice of Extremities, I had it in mind when I started reading the thread.

I'd like to offer up this one:

138. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) dir. Dominique Othenin-Girard

File:Halloween5poster.jpg

Is this the first appearance of Driving Michael?

Ok, so the mute stuff wears a bit thin, however I thought this was a solid entry into the Halloween pantheon.  Certainly better than 6.

I loved the hobo nursing Michael back to life.  I saw this in the theater and I thought the ending for me, was more exciting than it was a disappointment.

I was looking forward to seeing where the cult stroyline went and who was this stranger in black with the badass trenchcoat and boots?

139.

Gothic.jpg

dir. Ken Russell, 1986

The creepy as fuck dramatization of a single night during Percy & Mary Shelley's famous visit to Lord Byron's Geneva house in 1816. Abound in hallucinations & sexual madness, the film is a virtual cascade of nightmare imagery. Proving once again, as he did with Altered States & Crimes Of Passion, that nobody does "bugnuts crazy filmmaking" quite like Ken Russell.

An NSFW movie still from "Gothic" (Click to show)

140. Maniac Cop

378833.1020.A.jpg

A terrifying examination of what happens when that most sacred trust between the public and law enforcement is violated, and a sobering indictment of the fascist police state.

LOL, kidding, it's just a zombie cop slasher flick. But a really entertaining one! (I think we've totally milked "scariest" at this point, so I'm just going to post shit I like now). The start of what is easily my favourite slasher franchise. Director Bill Lustig is like Tarantino with only a fraction of the talent, but at least twice the pure exploitation filmmaker heart. He always keeps things fun, funny, violent, and high energy. Check out some of the actors who have appeared in his Maniac Cop trilogy:

THE Z'DAR

William MF'ing Smith

Tom MF'ing Atkins

Bruce "The Chin" Campbell

Richard "Shaft" Roundtree

Leo "Pinball Wizard" Rossi

Charles "Dead" Napier

Robert Davi

Clarence Williams III

Danny Trejo

Robert Forster

Jackie Earle Haley

Paul Gleason

PS. one of the best taglines ever too:

My god...just look at that cast. Ridiculous.

To be fair, some of them are very quick cameos. But at least it shows you where Lustig's mindset is.

Not to mention, "Written and produced by Larry Cohen"

By the way I lol'd/awwww'd at Charles "Dead" Napier.

Ha, that picture from Gothic reminded me of the "demon boobs" from the forgotten 1983 movie Mausoleum.

And here's another one I forgot about:

141. Jack's Back (1988) d. Rowdy Herrington

Wow!!

'Palisades...'

Not a scary movie, but the following scared the shit out of me when I was little.  Hell, I still cringe every time I watch it.  I wish I could have found one of him in the creek, but this will do.....

Damn, I forgot to add that one to #100 (I'll do so now). Shit like this is why the PG-13 rating was invented. Emotionally traumatizing.

Is it bad that I have no compunction about showing my son full-on horror classics when he is a few years older...................but I'm considering waiting even longer to show him E.T. because of that part of the film?

I don't know but if you expose him to the devastating, soul-burrowing sorrow of E.T., don't be surprised if you end up with a goth teen on your hands in a number of years.

I a guess I am alone on Prince of Darkness, this movie had everything for me and I will always stop and watch it to this day.
