The Semi Official iPhone Thread

I guess we never started one of these, and with the iPhone 5 looming pretty soon, and iOS 5 spreading like good herpes, might as well.

Hope they increase that screen size. AT&T let me stay in contract for only a year, so I might be tempted if they go with a new design and bigger screen.

If it's just like an update the iPhone 3G got when it went to 3GS, I'll hold off.

Also since the 4 is being sold unlocked by Apple, maybe they'll sell the next one too? I travel abroad some times.

Finally got my order through. Now to figure out ways to torture the people in the lines. I'm thinking coffee and mittens.

My contract isn't up until summer of next year, so maybe the 5 will be out by then.  My wife's contract is over in May, but she only has a 3GS right now, so I'm guessing she'll make the jump to the 4S.  She's also been contemplating switching to an Android phone also.  But our provider will most definitely change--our AT&T coverage is shit.  I am constantly reporting a dropped call to AT&T, almost on a daily basis.  And yes, they have an app for that.

We both have 3GS models, and we love the shape of the phone. She's not crazy about the shape of the iPhone 4, and neither am I for that matter. Although, the new specs for the 4S are tempting, I think we'll just wait for the 5 to roll around. Hopefully that one has a larger screen.

I've always felt that they won't add a larger screen so people wanting a larger screen are driven to the iPad.

I'm still hoping thought. Other phones have larger screens, and it would make sense for Apple to do that with the iPhone. If not that, they should bring back the curved back of the 3GS and 3G. The iPhone 4 just seems smaller compared to that one.

I know my Mother is in the market for a new phone, and now the 3GS is a free phone, so I mentioned that to her. Want to go with her to the AT&T store, because by the time she goes to get a new phone, the iPhone 4S should be out, and I can fiddle with one, and maybe that will tempt me. Maybe.

I could just go with an iPad though. For the aforementioned larger screen.

I pre-ordered one. I still have the 3G original, so any upgrade will seem like magic.

I'm upgrading from a 3G, too.  Can't wait for Friday.

What are people going to do when Apple announces the iPhone 6 instead of 5?

Baaaaaa baaaaaaaaaaaa baaaaaaaaaaa

(that's a sheep noise)

(well I usually get my 2 year commitments cut in half, so no reason not to upgrade. I usually make a nice profit selling my old phone anyways)

Saw this post on Twitter today: "Major dilemma for slackers in their 20s today...Continue to attend Occupy Wall Street rallys or wait in line for new iPhone"

That pretty much nails it right there.

Stuck at home, waiting for FedEx. Wish they could give exact times they would show up so I wouldn't just sit here.

I dunno how Devin had "Siri" before having a 4S. Even developers didn't have access. He probably had the old app Siri was based off of. Guess we'll see how much use she gets anyways.

Obviously the old app... how do people stand such overt control over them and your ability to choose?

You do know ALL phone OS have kill switches and can remove apps.

Even Android is closing their fragmentation and starting to enforce standards.

Windows Phone as well.

All OSes are really just heading towards the apple model.

iPhone 4S Mania Around the World!

Quote:

About 200 people were at Apple's Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan as the iPhone 4S went on sale at 8 a.m...

...Many said the event resembled a remembrance to Jobs, who died last week.

Emily Smith, a 27-year-old user experience designer in New York, checked in to the line on the location-centric social network Foursquare. She got a virtual Steve Jobs badge that read: "Here's to the crazy ones. ThankYouSteve."

Others joked that the 4S model stood "for Steve."

Many people came out despite the fact that they could have ordered phones online and had them shipped to their homes or offices.

Apple and phone companies in seven countries started taking orders for the iPhone 4S last Friday. Apple said Monday that more than 1 million orders came in, breaking the record set by last year's model, which was available in fewer countries and on fewer carriers.

The death of Jobs could be affecting sales. Marketing experts say products designed by widely admired figures such as Jobs usually see an upsurge in sales after their death.

He didn't have Siri. He had an APP called Siri from a company that was purchased by APPLE. They've redesigned it from the ground up, and integrated it into the very core of iOS. When the Siri button is there every time you bring up the keyboard, people will soon forget how they lived without it

The people who spout that kind of anti Apple stuff can only do so if they speak in half truths. Devin did not have Siri a year ago as it exits today

Devin is anti-Apple? Hooo boy.

Also, wasn't Facetime supposed to be thing that changed our lives and blahbedy blah blah?

Just let me know what next year's is when it rolls around....

First thing I did with the 4S was change the wallpaper.  I'm certainly not a geek at all...

Whats that thing in the background?

Yeah I changed mine to a picture of a loved one. Sue me for my heart growing 3 sizes.

Oh and airplay mirroring is sweet.

I opened your screenshot in a new TAB, and am currently geeking out over the iPhone's astounding screen resolution. It's huge!

As for your THING background, it's also very cool! It's both a great image, and it works well as a HOME SCREEN wallpaper IMHO

What's killing the face time is that you have to use WiFi in order to get it to work. And to be honest, some of the time..we don't want to look at who we are talking too.

My understanding is that FACETIME will now work with 3G (or perhaps 4G) on iPhone 4S

I don't think anything is 'killing' FACETIME though. People who enjoy talking that way or like it for business ETC use it, people who don't like video calls probably do not

During the developer previews we had facetime over 3G, trust me, it's not up to snuff. The speed isn't up to snuff.

Doesn't reallY surprise me. I've long railed against America's woefully under powered telecom networks. Seems more like an American problem than an Apple Problem, re: FACETIME on the go

My iPhone 4S is amazing in every way my iPhone 4 was...

...which means if you can live without Siri, stick with the 4.

So some quick thoughts:

I do like:
Things move a little snappier
The new camera setup is a blessing, with the volume button to click pictures and better focusing and video stabilization and 1080p recording.
Dictating texts and e-mails by voice is nice along with setting up my alarms and appointments
Oh and my data connection doubled in speed, but most of America doesn't have access to this.
Airplay mirroring
Custom text noises (I use the Magicians Alliance AHHHH from Arrested Development)
Damn this is a sexy looking phone....

I don't like:
The battery took a small hit, and its kind of annoying cause I'm used to charging less often.
I know OSes increase in size, but 16 gig is really more like 14 gigs!
Damn this a sexy looking phone, that can break easily (Otterbox Defended this)
I can't launch the CHUD app via Siri (honestly when they release some sort of API for this, some cool features could be nice like navigation, oh wait need to release the app)

On the Fence:
iCloud - I'm just starting to play around with this.
iMessenger - "Hey this is cool, free messaging. Let me text my uncle in India. WHAT?! He didn't update his OS?! Let me check AT&T for international text charges. Oh look they got my phone number listed here, oh wait that's the charge for texting to... ...India... ...well time for a change of shorts and a mortgage." (actually it does tell you if the person can receive the message free, BUT it's very easy to overlook)

Now by all means if you have a 3GS or lower, and have an upgrade at your disposal, I fully recommend it.

I like Siri. I use it all the time because it is a novelty. I imagine it'll wear off soon.

Best I can say is jailbreak your device and see how Facetime looks over 3G. Not so great, although, with 4G speeds of AT&T (I know not true 4G), it shouldn't be a problem.

Apple is just playing nice nice and not taxing the weak infrastructure.

They finally updated this?  Is this in iOS5, or just on the iPhone 4S?  This would seem like something that could be updated via the OS and not hardware.  This was my biggest complaint.  I really don't like any of the texting sounds that come with the iOS, and always wondered why you couldn't customize them.

The reason you couldn't customize them is they didn't want you to possibly use a noise that sounds similar to a push message you get from another app.

It's an iOS5 thing.  I've had my text tone on my phone for 2 years waiting for the chance to do this.  Now, happily, when I get a text message your hear the arrow flying through the air and sticking to my squire who happily reports "Message for you sir!".

So they shot some scenes from The Avengers with an iPhone 4.

Makes me want to film a movie myself.

Ok, after my last batch of app updates, I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge into iOS5.  Been putting it off because of the issues I've heard from other folks upgrading.  Will probably try it this afternoon or Tuesday and hope for the best.

AirPlay mirroring a Skype video chat is the wave of the future... The way of the future.

Got updated to iOS5 with little issue...at first all my music, etc., were gone, but then I realized I had to do some stuff on the phone before it would continue.  All my apps seem to have been copied over.  However, I am seeing the extra battery drain that folks have talked about.  Hopefully Apple has a fix for this soon.  I sync'd my phone this morning, drove to work--didn't use the phone at all, and when I got here (about 20 min drive), I was down to 98%.  I've gone at least an hour before of no use and still been 100%.

They released the 5.0.1 for devs, it helps a little.

I end up turning off some features with the GPS, and it's made the battery rock solid. (compass calibration, location-based iAds, setting time zone) and the raise to speak option for Siri. I don't use iCloud at the moment except for Find My iPhone, although I guess I'll turn it on just for Keynote, Numbers and Pages. This helped A LOT.

If you got issues, try taking it to the apple store and see if they replace it.

My battery lasts forever. I'm actually surprised at how long it lasts. I turn off all push, roaming, and other features like that.

Yeah but why pay for a smart phone if you can't use any features?

Another update went out, everything seems rock solid. I didn't charge my phone at all this weekend, and it made it through with 60% left. Light surfing, GPS, a game, some chit chats, some texts, a little music.

Well, I change the push options to be less frequent. I don't need to be updated with an alert badge, sound, and vibration every time I get an email.

Immediately upgraded to 5.0.1 when it was available and my battery issues seem to be gone, thank goodness.

Amazing how time flies...just checked and my wife can update her 3GS to a 4S in early January 2012, and I can upgrade at the end of February.  Which probably means I will wait for the 5 when it comes out inevitably in 2012.

....and after informing my wife of this, she's now told me, screw the iPhone, I'm switching carriers and phones when my contract is over in May.  I may switch to Sprint, just because it's "true" unlimited data.  Although I've only come close to hitting 2 GB like 2x in the past 18 months with my iPhone.  Think my wife is switching to Verizon, regardless.  Plus, I think we're gonna bite the bullet and dump DSL for Comcast's internet connection.  So AT&T will be losing a lot of $ from our household in 2012.

Wife's contract is over in a month.  She's waffling on staying with Apple (and go with the iPhone 4S), or switching to an Android phone.  Either way, she's going to Verizon.  She mostly just plays a couple of games, uses a couple of apps, and infrequently gets online.  She more uses the phone for calls and texting than anything else.

Latest iPhone 5 rumors say that the release will be sometime in October.  Which antagonizes me to no end since my contract is up in July.  THE WAITING!  THE AWFUL, AWFUL WAITING!
