Renn's Contest Short: T IS FOR TRUTH

So Drafthouse Films is running a contest to determine the 26th segment of their ABC's Of Death anthology film. The other 25 shorts are being produced by notable but  still up-and-coming directors, all of which are directing shorts based on a letter of the alphabet and a death involving a topic that begins with said letter. The letter "T" was left open for a public submission contest for films <4 minutes, and I put something together. T is for Truth.

It's a very humble little short made with no resources and very little time. I'm not going make excuses for some of the roughness beyond saying that sound work continues. I'm happy enough with it though, and hope you'll enjoy it and that the story reads. A lot of talented people worked very hard to help me put this together.

You can see it right here.

That was really good. Voted.

For what its worth, my feedback would be to adjust the opening back from after the first cut to black in the basement and I wasn't keen on the credits. Other than that, nicely done and great use of sound.

Ha, thanks for the sound note. It could be a really sharp sounding movie, but I lost some of the sound support I was expecting.

Thanks for the feedback-- I'm glad to hear it, and not to proud to acknowledge. The time transitions definitely aren't as graceful as I'd like, mostly a result of the time constraint. An extra 10 seconds and they'd be easily smoothed out. And I agree on the credits, my nice subtle 1pt glow rendered into a blown out mess.

I really appreciate the view and the vote!

That's impressive. If there was one visual thing that stood out as a little off it was the close ups on the dude's mouth. I can't give feedback that's any more technical than that, they just feel like they're not shot in the same place for some reason. Maybe it's a lighting thing, maybe it's because the head seemed too be holding too still, I don't know. But it was only a little thing and it didn't ruin it or anything. I also didn't 100% get what happened at the end there, but I think I guessed right.

Everything else was sweet though. Nicely shot, very solid performances, some nice ideas in the writing. Also voted.

As someone who used to make short films with friends, a close-up of lips was ALWAYS one of the hardest things to make look NOT awkward.  My memory of this contest is fuzzy, but I think a close-up of lips was one of its requirements.

Not a requirement but when I looked again I see that lips were the example they used for the red in/out requirement.

The lip/eye macros were a stylistic motif I decided on in the writing, but yeah definitely tough to pull off. There's nothing I like better than shoving a camera all up in an actor's face though, so I went with it.

Again, I appreciate the votes guys, each and every one of them. I have no pretension about actually winning the whole shebang, but I'm going to do my damnedest to get into the final 10. Anything less I'll see as a failure to live up to everyone who helped me.

Ohhhhh, that's what I was thinking of!

Since you mentioned that you're still working on the sound, does that mean that the deadline for submission just recently passed by?
