I always get precisely 4 minutes into episodes of Legacy before i start thinking about my grocery list. This universe just does not hold up to a realistic, gritty take. It needs the self-awareness, and Tancharoen just refuses to let it happen.

Zack Snyder would rock this shit without breaking a sweat. Try to dispute that. Try.

The fantastical elements needs to be EMBRACED, not shoved under the rug.  All you need to do is poll people on their favorite MK characters to know that.  If you ask someone who their favorite Mortal Kombat character is, 9 times out of 10 they will spout off someone like Scorpion or Sub-Zero who has mystical powers.  I've never heard anyone carry on about how much they love Liu Kang, Jax, or Kung Lao.  It is the violence AND the fantasy elements that people love about the franchise...........not how "realistic" it is.

I'm glad that WB is letting him go full-on for an R rating.  That said, I'll be shocked if he can squeak by without including the fantasy aspects of the franchise.  I really can't see Warner Bros. letting that fly.  All questioning aside, I'd love to see Michael Jai White (and Scott Adkins) propelled to stardom through something like this.

I think you might still get him.  I just don't think WB will allow him to drop ALL of the mythological elements.

The one thing that bothers me about these sorts of reboots are people who come in and, most likely, consider the original film sacrosanct. Someone involved in this production really needs to throw the original film under the bus for me to pay attention, not because it's not very good (it isn't) but to prove they aren't setting a low ceiling of achievement, the sort of low ceiling that keeps guys like Marcus Nispel employed.
