YOU CAN’T HANDLE KIRSTEN DUNST’S BOOBS

You can, on the other hand, handle Charlotte Gainsbourg's boobs.

She sounds (or reads as) ridiculous, but if I were to be kind enough to translate what I think she's trying to say about her boobs, it's that she's famous, has equally famous boobs, and people (dudes) have been talking for years about how they'd like to see them. I mean, not too many people have bothered posting naked screencaps of Gainsbourg, not that I've noticed anyway. When it's her, it's not just an actress doing nudity for a role, it's like a weird, pervy, semi-major event. So in that, she's correct.

I'm confused.  Is she topless in Melancholia or not?

I don't really give a shit because I want to see the film anyway, but the article states that she is naked a lot in it and her comments point towards her not actually "giving up the goods".

I concur with Kirsten's hypothesis, and Johnny's translation.  Also:  boobs.

Those are great boobs. Kirsten Dunst is a total babe and I love her.

It pains me that this could potentially be the buzz for Melancholia.

Topless and side-naked/ naked from afar.

I assure you all I could handle Kirsten Dunst's boobs. Would be happy to, in fact.

She needs to get over herself. Her comments about Gainsbourg's bust size offend me. Who cares how big your boobs are? She seems to be suffering from delusions of grandeur: "I'm the one person people would love to rope in to that"

Um, till this article, I forgot she existed. Meanwhile Skarsgard was just in THOR, and is beloved by countless people the world over. Her glory days are far behind her, yet she's talking as if she were about to unleash SPIDERMAN 4: MJ's MUSICAL THEATER TRIUMPH

Oh, and maybe the rest of the cast didn't speak up because they didn't feel the need to police what Von Trier says, you know, since he's an award winning director and not a child
post #12 of 30

No, she's absolutely right. If she was in a movie where she ran around naked half the time and cut off her clitoris, it would have been a media circus. And with her larger breasts it would have seemed even more exploitative. Gainsbourg is a relatively unknown (on these shores) French actress, therefor the media focus was on the film and not "OMG MARY JANE FROM SPIDER-MAN SHOWS TITS AND CUTS CLITS".

Well I have not seen ANTICHRIST, but IMHO if you're a professional, the tabloid press throwing a fit over something shouldn't be a concern for you. Take the role, and then promptly remember to ignore what ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT says about it

Does she think that Gainsbourg didn't have to deal with similar considerations with the French press?

Kirsten. We've seen your boobs. You can go away now.

I don't know about that. I mean big or small people like tits. If they are going to focus on those tits instead of the film well then they can't help that. To me it's not exploitative if the actress agrees to it having read the script and is being paid. Although I do agree it would have gotten much more attention, attention maybe she wasn't comfortable with. But even now she has to know there are people who are going to see this film just to see her topless. And not to be too cynical but since we haven't seen her in a couple years I wouldn't doubt that factored in. I mean it's a way to show her talents and actually get people to see a film that not nearly as many eyes would be on.

You're being ridiculous. It's very easy for you to say some silly shit like this since you don't have to consider the career ramifications that Dunst has to. Antichrist achieved a certain level of infamy here and abroad, but nowhere near as much as it would have if Dunst was in it. None of the media outlets in this country would even give a shit what it was about, they'd just focus on Dunst and a handful of scenes and nothing else. I don't care if she's self-absorbed or not, she's correct.

I just don't have much respect for those who shy away from challenging roles because of concern for how America's Puritan backwaters might misinterpret their work. Oscar Winner Jennifer Connelly went ass to ass, and she still managed to get great scripts and work in top films. Dunst seems like a prude, going by this interview. Just MHO

Oh, and by 2009, Dunst had no real career worth worrying about anyway
post #18 of 30

Dunst clearly does not shy away from challenging roles and Connelly never went "ass-to-ass", her body double did (as a matter of fact, even Gainsbourg had a BD for Antichrist's more explicit scenes, but the point stands).

It's not about her being afraid to take the role, it's about how if she had been in that role it would have overshadowed the content of the movie. It's a moot point because Von Trier is smart enough to realize this and would have never cast her in the part anyway. But Kirsten Dunst's statement remains correct.

She is 100% correct in her assessment, even if she is a bit self-centered about it.  If she had starred in Antichrist (or something similar) the film would have gotten far more attention; not on its own merits..........but for containing a nude celebrity prancing around and mutilating her genitals.  Think about how much attention Closer got back in the day for Natalie Portman showing her stuff in it.  How many people watched it just to see her ta-tas............as opposed to being interested in the film itself?  This happens time and time again.  Anne Hathaway with Love & Other Drugs (even though she'd already done it earlier in Havoc and Brokeback Mountain).  Halle Berry in Swordfish.

Of course the slight irony here is what Spike has pointed out.....

So true and I won't be surprised at all if it gains some attention for Dunst being topless and in full-view.

I think you guys are missing the point of her point. Much of what she's saying (in the tit conversation at least) is that her body type would have looked ridiculous and distracting in those scenes, and she's right. The character goes on a disturbingly frantic, naked, running, manic-ground-masturbating craze that would have worked in an entirely different way if a more ample woman was flopping around so gratuitously.

Who really cares? They're tits. It's 2011.

I guess many just find it funny that she thinks she has especially big ones that may seem odd in specific scenes. Gemma Arterton didn't look odd when she got pinned naked on the bed in Alice Creed and she certainly doesn't have smaller ones.

Now a Hayley Atwell, Rosario Dawson, Elvira... yeah, there's a line somewhere where it may get too distracting.

I think what Dunst is getting at is that it would be shocking to see a larger-breasted woman being brutalized and self-brutalized because for all people big tits = more feminine. The "hourglass" figure and all that. So to see a more traditionally, obviously sexual and even idealized female body being deformed is more disturbing because we would have immediately responded to the violence, on a gut level, as being an even greater insult or degradation than it already is since the symbol of what it is debasing is so much more instinctively resonant.

Maybe that would have been even more effective -- I dunno. Kate is just pissed because Dunst sounds like she's bragging, but it's actually pretty self-aware of her to know the response she elicits from an audience. It's something all actors should be conscious of if they want to pick the right roles.

Its very strange the discussion and what Dunst said. Kudos to her seriously. I think her point in weirdly valid and yet I understand why some would be offended by what she said.

I don't think many independent film producers or filmmakers care about offending puritan backwaters or most (ie 90%) actresses do either.

I don't know, I find genital mutilation to be pretty fuckawful and I'm not certain tit-size would have any effect on my level of disgust.

I don't know either. Maybe it wouldn't. But her idea makes sense in the context of depicting gender in a certain way, so on an intellectual or thematic level at least it can be said to make a difference.

But yeah, it would be pretty hard to differentiate between the levels of disgust caused by graphic clit-chopping, so maybe it's in idea that could only ever work in theory.

That would look great on a movie poster. Add a IN 3D and you would have my money.

Weird quote and weird conversation.

And funny that Kate points out the NSFW pic and then quotes it, insuring an extra NSFW copy is in the thread when someone scrolls down. Brilliant. LULZ.
