Jose Padilha prepared to do his own thing with Alex Murphy.

ROBOCOP may be a time capsule film, but in today's socioeconomic environment a remake/reboot could be pretty timely.  #OccupyOldDetroit?

Yes, I can hardly think of a more  pertinent tale for this age than that of Murphy, OCP and Old Detroit. It's a darn shame that Aronofsky's genius is being scrubbed from the remake. I can only hope that this fails in development, and a few years from now he'll get to come back and lead the project to it's green light

I haven't seen anything by Padilha, so I'm pretty much curious. It's a difficult project to boot. It's a franchise product, so the aim will be to reach as many people as possible. Making it too pg-13 kills off interest of the elder, and the sheer fact that the upcoming movie will never. Never. Never. Never be as gloriously violent as the original already brings up fan anger. You can't have Robo be a slow moving tank anymore, because you really can't see robotic technology being so clumsy and slow in the future anymore. But making Robo agile and fast, he's no longer the one Robocop we're all used to see, who resembles Frankenstein's monster.

And try to find an actor able to replace Kurtwood Smith. Smith's Boddicker was so cool, he would take away Scarface's cigar and put it out on the tip of his dick. Mothers don't make those Clarences anymore.

I'm down for this.  After all, anything is better than Robocop III.  That said, I truly hope no one is going into this thinking that they are going to get just an updated version of Verhoeven's film.  Padhila has already stated repeatedly that he won't be going for the same form of social commentary and satire that Verhoeven did.  That's a smart move on his part because there is no way to top what was done before.  Besides, I wouldn't want to see him try.  He is 100% doing his own thing and bringing his own sensibilities to the property, which is EXACTLY what should be done with any remake or reboot.

I haven't seen any of Padhila's work yet, but I am very interested in checking out both Elite Squad films.  I will withold my judgement in terms of his "worthiness" of the job until then, but I like what I am hearing from him so far.  Color me curious.

I love Aronofsky to death, but at this point I will be shocked if he EVER actually directs something like this.  Either through bad luck or walking away, he has yet to make any of the remakes or franchise properties that he has attached himself to (Batman: Year One, Lone Wolf & Cub, Robocop, The Wolverine, etc.).  That said, I think we will basically get his Robocop if he ACTUALLY ends up making the adaptation of DC's Machine Man that he is attached to (and signed onto shortly after leaving this).

This is going to get made no matter what because MGM is in desperate need of franchises to get the company back on top again.  With that in mind, I'd rather see it in the hands of someone who wants to do something different (be it Padhila or someone else) than some studio puppet who will do a watered-down remake of the original (i.e. the shitty looking Total Recall redo).  At least it looks like they are going the right route with this, instead of chucking out a shitty half-assed reboot for quick cash.

Princess Kate, I for one am...Glad, that Aronofsky's script isn't being used.  I don't think much of any of his films.  I hope this new Robocop is better than...Robocop 3, Robocop:Prime Directives The Miniseries, Robocop The Series, Robocop The Cartoon and even better than the weaker moments of Robocop 2.  Clarence Boddicker, portrayed by Kurtwood Smith is almost impossible to replace as the main henchman for OCP!  I also am curious if there will be an...Officer Lewis.  Nancy Allen, who I Loved since...1941 (the film not the...Year!), is also hard to replace.  Dick Jones should be easier.  All you need is a great character actor.  Liam Neeson would be my pick!  My pick for Clarence would be...Jason Issacs!
