This movie was made all the better by a good Googling after I first saw it. I guess since the film hasn't opened yet I'll use the ol' spoiler feature, but the key word to Google is...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Anophthalmia

I'm not that into horror.  Most stuff doesn't scare me.  But this one kinda creeps me out from the premise alone despite the somewhat goofy trailer.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?"

(slap)

I laughed.

Are you not into horror because most stuff doesn't scare you? I only ask because I feel like most diehard horror fans rarely get scared by the films they see -- kinda like how hardcore stoners say they don't get the munchies. Though, unlike the stoner analogy, I suppose I'm always chasing that dragon, looking for something that does still scare me. Which still happens every now and then.

THE WOMAN isn't meant to scare though. It is meant to provoke and unsettled.

Saw this in London at FRIGHT FEST.

It's brilliant, very reserved in almost all of its scenes. I'd say you barely see anything really, but that makes it much worse. A horror film built on the menace of one man and how he affects his family. It's also shot with very flat, matter of fact photography.

I described it to a friend after seeing it as a TIME LIFE movie gone horribly, horribly wrong. It's also very funny, very darkly funny, on purpose. The film uses humor as punctuation to the scenes sentances, making whats about to follow, or come before it that much more scary.

It's really great and non horror fans I think, although maybe disturbed by it, will like it. There's nothing that's going to jump out at you and splatter you.

You know, Joshua... I'm not sure.

To me, something unsettling IS scary.  Dread and unease.  Stuff getting into your skin.  David Lynch's films 'scare' me.

Aside from that, I've never been into the horror genre anywhere near enough to want to  'chase the dragon.'  I was actually wondering about that with diehard horror fans.  With all the films they see, what could possibly scare them?  What keeps them trudging through piles and piles of what I hear is mostly schlock?

Hard to say, objectively, but it's something I grazed upon in the first HELLRAISER Franchise Me, which is that I think horror fans aren't actually looking to be scared so much as they're attracted to the concepts and themes that are present in horror films. I think casual horror fans - the kind that don't watch much horror unless it is near Halloween and they're in the mood - are the ones who are expressly looking to be scared. These are the people that make PARANORMAL ACTIVITY a hit, which provides a great "jump scare" theatrical experience, but is extremely boring from a conceptual standpoint.

Yea, Paranormal Activity, aside from a couple of good moments here and there across the first two movies, didn't stick with me at all.

This film is one of my favourites of the year and I really hope as many people as possible go and see it so that McKee can carry on making films.

True horror should make you uncomfortable and shouldnt be an easy watch and this sums up The Woman nicely...

Wait, I'm lost. In my mind I was still waiting for Off Season for some reason. So Offspring is already out and there's an actual sequel? What? Dammit, being a non-mainstream horror fan in Greece sucks balls.

Yeah, OFFSPRING was released straight to DVD on the Ghost House label.

Jebus, check out this cover to Ketchum's book.

Oddly, that cover is more graphic than the film.

Allow me to big myself up for a moment.....The quote from my review is in big letters at the top of the UK dvd and blu-ray cover

"Powerful, Brutal and Beautiful....amazing"

Oddly not all these words were in the same sentence in my review but never mind....

Ha. Well played, sir. Well played.

Just saw this movie and damn if it doesn't push every single one of my buttons.   Very few horror films affect me on a visceral level but this one did.    Trying to stay non specific but it's definitely one of those "take a shower afterwards" kind of movie.   Highly recommended.

This movie snuck up on me in the woods and smacked me upside the head with tree limb. I loved it. I kind of wish Sean Brigders had kept up the George Bush good-ol' boy thing and not melted into an unsubtle mess at the very end, but that's minor. Well, that and Carlee Baker being horrible all over the place. Otherwise, it's beautifully uncomfortable the whole way through.
