The Official Thread of Halloween 2011

The leaves are starting to fall and the days are cold and growing colder. I can already feel deep in my bones the darkness creeping back into the world. With Halloween a little less than a half month away, does anyone yet have fiendish plans for All Hallows Eve?

Decorations: What are you putting up to frighten and impress your neighbors?

Costumes: Are you going as a generic monster or maybe a movie character? Would you wear a non scary costume of some sort? Or perhaps your every day persona ghoulish enough already!

Trick Or Treating: Do you still do it? Do you intend to do it this year, or are you stuck at home handing out candy?

Parties: Some of the ghastliest galas are held Halloween night. Will you be in attendance?

Candy: What are your favorite treats?

Movies:
What are your Halloween favorites? Will you take part in a traditional horror movie marathon to celebrate the date?

Jack-O-Lanterns: Share yours here!

OK that should get the ball rolling for discussion for now, I'll keep an eye on the calendar as the 31st creeps ever closer!

No definitive plans yet for Halloween, but I will be attending a charity concert this weekend that will be playing plenty of Halloween themed music.

I do an annual storytelling party every October, just the weekend just before or after Halloween. This year, it's right before - 10/29. I may be going to my city's party district for their big Halloween thing after, but playing that by ear.

Some good plans shaping up! Nothing definite for me yet. Probably going to have to hand out candy at my mom's house though

I'm planning on going to the Fetish & Fantasy Ball this year, which by all accounts is a grand old time.

My friend picked out Sailor/Sailorette costumes, which I though was fun, and fairly tame for this event.  However, after getting mine and trying it on, I've come to the conclusion that mine is actually a Gay Sailor costume, I could totally be in a Village People video.  Oh well, probably fits in even better with the party and should be a lot of fun.

I wouldn't count on it. The last time I did something for Halloween other than watch movies and hand out candy (which I've done for like four years in a row now), it was to attend a similar event. The fact I've stayed home ever since should speak to my experience

PS: I am kind of dreading pumpkin carving this year.. Every year it takes hours and hours of effort, and it rarely turns out exactly like I envision. I have nerve damage in my hands, and so they begin to cramp up and ache after just a few minutes of holding a pumpkin knife

Apparently Irene damaged many pumpkin patches in the North East, and rumors are pumpkins are going to be hard to get, or very expensive. My mom's offered to buy me one several times, but I've held off, saying that "I'll wait till it's closer to Halloween". My secret hope is that I'll wait long enough that none will be available

The Jack-o-lantern icon at the top of this thread? It's my pumpkin from last year. Here is an album of photos of my pumpkin from that year, in case anyone's curious: ALBUM

Today there is all sorts of free candy/Halloween food at my job. I'm currently engaged in a plot to claim as much of it as possible as my own, without appearing overtly greedy

We have hand made fudge lollypops, we have butterfingers, starburst, double bubble, cider, banana bread, brownies and more

Halloween!!!! YAAAAAAY!

My oldest daughter was peeking over my shoulder when I checked the thread so she told me I had to post pics of our pumpkin. I'll take very little credit though, I just drew on the face and my girls did all the hard work. Sorry about your hands Kate.

Great night at the Fetish and Fantasy Ball, gotta give this town credit, they can throw a great party!

Ghost, that  is a very cool jack o' lantern. What did you use for carving tools? I bought a $5 kit at Kroger, but the blades they include were very cheap and barely made it through the 3 pumpkins we had (in fact, one broke before we could finish).

Thanks Michael. We've used a set of Wal-Mart specials for the last three years. They're just your standard orange pumpkin knife, the blunt tip saw blade, and the plastic scraper. My oldest daughter, she's seven, did the majority of the work. Mostly I think it's just being patient but she's bent the blade a few times. It feels really brittle but it hasn't broken yet, so knock on wood. The first year we carved pumpkins I tried doing one with a knife and it was such a huge pain in the ass, that little blunt saw knife is like the wheel in comparison. Shit just works.

She's working on our third right now, the first one only lasted about a day. Down here you've gotta coat them with a bit of vaseline or they can't handle the heat and you're good to get a day or two out of one once it's carved.

EDIT: This is the actual brand but ours is older so the handle and stuff doesn't look as ergo. Somehow we've lost everything but the main knife and scraper.

Oh and this is kind of dumb but we use pumpkin scented candles too. Smells awesome when the wind blows into the living room.

You guys are using those pumpkin blades in a sawing fashion, with quick little strokes*, right? Even the cheapest ones should last you for years if used right. I usually carve around 4 pumpkins a year, and have used the same cheap cutter for the past few years.

* I also stencil/perforate my pattern on the pumpkin face before sawing away, so that method may be easiest on the blade too. Oh, and the pumpkin should be gutted/cleaned out and the walls should be thin before you start sawing too.

Happy Halloween.. bwa hahahhahahahahahahaa..... Happy Halloween.. bwa hahahahahahahahaa..

That is a traditional Halloween greeting in my family,  and I want to extend it to you all this afternoon. When I was growing up we had a Halloween door chime that had a spooky voice, and repeated that phrase twice when you pushed the button. Now every year we'll say it the exact same way

I hope you all stay safe and have a successful night of Trick-or-Treating. In 10 minutes I get off work to spend an hour and a half on pumpkin carving, and then I have class before returning to my mom's house to hand out candy. My pumpkin apparently froze accidently, so it may be ruined. We'll just have to see how it goes. If the results are not totally horrible (I have no clue what to carve this year), I'll post a photo in this thread later on

See you guys tomorrow... if you survive the night

That's awesome.

I had one big Halloween party over the weekend, and another small one tonight.  I'm pretty proud of my costume this year.  It's not the most accurate interpretation, but I put more work into it than I usually do, and I had a couple people get it without any hints, so I call it a success.

Beginning of the night:

dalek

EXTERMINATE.

Of course, I lost most of the props to the party as the evening went on.  And one of my favorite details isn't really visible in the photographs, but I also had blinking lights in my hair.

End of the night (with my awesome roommate who sewed my dress after finishing her own April O'Neil costume):

dalek and april

Happy Halloween, everybody.

I accidently ruined my pumpkin, and so now I have no jack-o-lantern to show off this year. I've dropped out of handing out candy at my moms house, and am just going to stay at home and sulk

Edit: just put up a series of seven post its on my door that spell out "N-O   C-A-N-D-Y"

Grace, what a great costume.  I don't want to come across as a dirty old man, but allow me to say that you (and your roomate) are adorable.

Me as Wolverine. Yes, those are improvised butter knife claws.

Holy shit, that's fantastic, Bartelby. Well done. And finally a way to justify the facial hair!

Wait you mean the claws don't have to be cgi?!?!?!?!

This Halloween, I'm tired and going to sleep early.

My attempt at Heisenberg.

This is the best "Cranston concerned underbite" face of the evening. Sadly you can't really see the crazy amount of wrinkles my friend put on my face.

The plunger completes it. Seriously though, that's pretty awesome and well thought out, especially with the blinking hair lights!  bowdown.gif

Kudos to your roommate with her, excuse my James Rolfe language, "banana raincoat wearin' bitch" costume!  Applause.gif

I'm sorry to hear that Kate. Trust me, you are not the first to have "pumpkin malfunction" (kinda fun to say actually, eh?) at such a late hour.

If you really had your heart set on carving a pumpkin, remember that it's a hobby that can be enjoyed outside of Halloween. So, don't be bashful about picking up a discounted one and carving it out later on...for practice, fun, and the delicious seeds.

Stored at room temp, they can last a long time. I had one that I bought in October one year and didn't carve until the following February.

Pumpkin woes aside, never forget that Halloween is still going. Every day it is!  HappyHalloween004.jpg

Pumpkin malfunction is a nice turn of phrase, and it's good to know I'm not alone in having one. Thanks, Z!

I didn't really have my heart set on carving one, but I just feel bad about neglecting a tradition, and then screwing up at the task I'd set myself to. There was actually a pumpkin shortage this year, so I won't be able to get one for practice. I actually went out and tried to buy another right after mine broke, but had no luck

Anyway, thanks again for the nice sentiments, and yes, pumpkin seeds are rather delicious! tongue.gif
