December may be your chance to catch 8 full minutes of Batman in 70mm.

Playing the entirety of The Dark Knight Rises wouldn't be enough to get me to buy a ticket to Sherlock 2.

It's a good thing it'll be playing in front of M:I4!!

I'm a little torn on this.  Because a big part of me wants to save all of TDKR for that first full viewing.  I didn't go to the preview for TDK.  But still...

Hopefully, it's just 8 minutes of dailies from the OWS shoot.

I saw TDK's prologue in front of IAL, and never regretted it. I'll be doing this for sure, though whether I stick around for M:I:GP remains to be seen.

I'll admit I'm sorta surprised by this move. TDK's screening made sense; they were building momentum and WOM for a sequel to a movie that barely made it into the black. They currently doing almost zero official marketing for this, and don't need to. Anticipation for it is sky-high, as is public awareness. Regardless, I'm glad, and my butt will be there for the IMAX footage.

Finally, a reason to watch a fourth Mission: Impossible!

Wait, that joke was sorta taken, wasn't it?

For those who enjoy this sort of thing, hooray, and I'm glad it seemed to work as an effective marketing technique for TDK.. but with that said, you'd not be able to pay me to spoil such a big chunk of a movie for myself. TDKR is going to be one of the most anticipated releases of the decade, behind AVATAR 2 and whatever new franchises might get a chance to shine between now and 2020. The idea of your first viewing being polluted with the foreknowledge of how the film's opening eight minutes play out just seems wrong on every level

The first few minutes of the movie isn't going to spoil anything. The opening to The Dark Knight shown that December was to help kill the bad buzz that The Joker was being ruined by this pretty boy Heath Ledger. All the bad buzz about the Joker flew out the window and the hype went through the roof after that. I assume something similar will happen with this in regards to Bane and/or Catwoman and the lukewarm response they've been getting.

I don't see how watching the beginning of a movie out of context doesn't in some ways spoil the experience, at least for some people

Showing chunks of scenes from the middle or end I entirely agree with. But how can a prologue be out of context? It's like reading the prologue to a book and then deciding that you want to buy it. It doesn't spoil the rest of the book because it is merely the introduction.

Because it's the beginning of the film. It's context is that it's the first part of a larger movie. I'm OK with them doing a ONE OFF TRAILER in order to introduce Bane or something if that's the concern, but putting a big chunk of your movie out in front of audiences disconnected from the larger story just would for me ruin a film

I think it'd be too painful to see a really gripping opening sequence and then be like, "Wow...can't wait to watch the rest -- eight months from now."

But the opening prologue to The Dark Knight was shot as a mini-film in itself which is why I think Christopher Nolan even allowed it to be shown in the first place. I seriously doubt it was a studio decision. He shot it like the opening to a James Bond picture. In other words, the prologue works with or without the movie and still has an effect.

Personally, I didn't hear anyone complain that seeing the first 6 minutes of The Dark Knight before it opened ruined the rest of the film for them. Quite the opposite. I guess we'll agree to disagree.

I can appreciate what you're saying, but for me at least, I don't even want to see the full non teaser trailer before I walk into the theater
