"Tetsuo" will be changed to "Ted", no doubt.

I don't think an Akira live action film is necessary at all.

I predict it will bomb hard.

TTTTEEEEDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!

At the risk of invoking anime fan wrath I'll admit I'm curious about a remake. The original certainly had its share of iconic imagery (and as my first exposure to anime absolutely blew my mind when I was 10), but having seen it recently I'm not sure I'd hold it up as an untouchable bit of cinema history. I'm ready to be wowed, but I gotta say what I've seen of Jaume Collet-Serra's work has sort of peaked at mediocre. To be fair, Goal II: Living the Dream might be amazing.

It's like the Japanese adapting The Searchers....but set in Tokyo, revolving around rock stars....or something equally stupid like that.  I wrote a ten thousand word dissertation on Akira, and yeah it's about Japan, so all the sparkly CGI in the world won't save this adaptation.  But hey, Tron Legacy seemed to make its money back so anything's possible I guess.  Never underestimate the publics ability to swallow bad movies.

Sure, why not?

I mean the only difference would be that the characters will be older. And not Japanese. Therefore getting rid of Akira's comments about Japanese youth culture out of the window. And it will have about a quarter of the plot and a tenth of the craziness. And unless it's budgeted at 200mil+ the finale won't be near half as bonkers.

At least Otomo is getting paid. So that's good.

Necessary is a strange assertion, because is any cinema ever really necessary?

I agree, however, that this is more than likely a bad idea. Any American adaptation won't be able to go to the twisted and sickening body horror places Tetsuo is eventually taken.

You know, because this will be PG-13.

If they're going back to the well and using the manga then this might have a shot at being good but they'll still find a way to fuck it up.
