Stone Roses reunion: Manchester rockers get back together for tour

Quote:

The Stone Roses officially got back together yesterday - but insisted: "It's not about the money."

The classic line-up - singer ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield and drummer Alan "Reni" Wren - announced a pair of reunion gigs in June next year at Manchester's Heaton Park with a world tour to follow.

Brown, 48, also delighted fans by revealing they have been working on new songs.

Coachella?

They say it's gonna be an extensive world tour, so I imagine that CA dates are inevitable, Coachella being the obvious biggie.

All said, I still can't believe that this is actually happening. Unbelievable.

Please don't encourage these reunions by has-beens looking for spare change.  Has there ever been a reunion that didn't suck and ultimately make you feel sad at the sight of seeing your favourite musicians practically beg for attention and money?  I'm not going to put myself through seeing a middle age Stone Roses do that.  Already went through the Pixies trauma, never again!  These bands will remain in their prime and with dignity in my memory and music collection.

It's 2011 and if you were ever in a band more successful than you are now, you reform and go on tour. It's just the way of the world now. Most of the time its pretty harmless - they get a paycheque and the fans get a show. Reunion albums are pretty rare now, so it's not like the legacy is particularly affected. The Pixies still sound pretty good when they play from what I've heard.

The Stone Roses had a particularly messy and shambolic end so I doubt this will be any more embarrassing than their final days in the mid 90's. Whether Brown can sing the songs at all is the big question.

I actually preferred some of Ian Brown's genre-bending solo work than his time with Stone Roses.  I can't deny the benefits of a reunion for the people involved, but for the fans it should be a tragic thing to witness.  Should be, but the initial gut-reaction is always "yay, I can't believe it!" or "Yeah they're not as good as they were but...they're The Stone Roses man!  I'll take what I can get!"

Undue cynicism aside, the reunion of the Roses is a phenomenon that ranks second only to a never-will-happen Smiths reunion. For a Britpop fan like myself who was too young & too far away to bask in the glow of Madchester, this coming world tour finally brings that lost opportunity to see the old gods for the first time. Quit yer bitchin'.

Yep. Iggy and the motherfucking Stooges.

Yeah I saw the Stooges a few years back and it was one of the most arse kicking shows I've ever seen. Their reunion album was mostly dreadful though.

I saw a reunited Gang Of Four (!) play last year & they were fucking GOD-LIKE (and well over age 50). A jaw-dropping show. They put their 20-something indie opening band to bed...with roses. Dismissing reunions straight out of hand is just ridiculous.

Can't believe the touts are already gouging folk (well, I can actually).  Tickets going for three grand FFS.

If they come to NZ I'm there, just to sing along with a big crowd to I Wanna Be Adored will be worth it.  But given that they apparently made 10 mill in one day (according to the Lying Sun) on the three gigs it's hard not to see it as a pure cash in

It's not like they'd made tons of cash the first go around. Whatever cash they'd made from the record company went into the money pit known as Second Coming. The Police made a fucking mint when they toured recently & I hope this reunion sets the Roses up for life. They all have kids & it's not like Primal Scream, Brown's solo albums, or John's paintings have been raking in the bucks. Good for the old blokes, I say. Whatever fortune is comin', they've earned it.
