He really was.  He doesn't even seem to know who the characters are or their relationships. Like he showed up for late for what he thought would be a first script read-through, complete with bathrobe and slight buzz on, only to find out they were filming for realsies.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Joker was originally supposed to be named Steve Napier, but they changed it because they couldn't get Palance to stop calling the one person on set he recognized by his real name.

I'm somehow shocked that I've managed to make it 31 years without ever having 1) seen this movie and 2) hearing anything about it.  Gonna have to rectify.

In the Mouth of Madness is so good, and those two scenes are particularly unnerving.  I love how it melds Stephen King, Lovecraft and Carpenter.  Michael De Luca, who used to run New Line, wrote it, and it just oozes love of horror concepts.

For your consideration: Inferno by Dario Argento. It is on Netflix instant and it has an old man getting bitten to death by rats after drowning a bag of cats. THEN the hotdog vendor gets involved...  Not a great movie by any means, but it does have some nice bits. I dug the Three Mothers Latin Gregorian chant synth-rock song during the climax.
